Mathews hints at giving Dickwella chance at No. 3

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews has hinted that they might give wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella a chance at No. 3 in the upcoming Tests against England

Sri Lanka Test captain Angelo Mathews has hinted that they might give wicketkeeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella a chance at No. 3 during the Tests in England.Sri Lanka’s tour begins at the end of this week, with a three-day game against Essex in Chelmsford, before they head to Leicester for their second warm-up match. The first Test starts on May 19 at Headingley.”We will try to play a fixed side and make sure the players are given permanent positions,” Mathews said. “But at this point of time Dimuth [Karunaratne] and Kaushal [Silva] will be our openers and the No. 3 spot will be occupied by either Kusal Mendis, who is shaping up well, or Niroshan Dickwella.”Dickwella has only batted in the lower order so far in his four Tests. He made his debut at No. 7 against South Africa in 2014, with scores of 72 and 16. He has not batted above No. 6 yet.Mendis, another wicketkeeper-batsman, made his Test debut at No. 3 against West Indies last October after Lahiru Thirimanne lost that spot because of poor form. Mendis then batted at No. 3 in New Zealand in December, with scores of 46, 31, 46 and 8.Thirimanne averages 20.66 with only one fifty in the seven matches he has played over the last 12 months, but Mathews was confident Thirimanne would come good during the England tour.”Lahiru is recovering from a hamstring injury which he first picked up in New Zealand and if he is fit he will play in the first Test. We need his experience in the batting.”Though the Sri Lankan side lacks experience, Mathews said they could overcome that issue with their fearless approach. Mathews, with 56 Tests, and left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, with 67, are the only players in the squad who have more than 50 Test caps.”When you have a young and inexperienced side you have nothing to lose but go out there and perform, that’s what the team will do. The key is their fearless attitude to take up the challenge and deliver.”We came close to beating New Zealand twice and we won the Test series against West Indies. This team has the potential to perform and win. The two warm-up games will be crucial for us to acclimatise ourselves to the conditions we are going to come up against. We are going into two extremes of temperatures, from the high we have been experiencing at home to almost freezing point in England. The need to adjust very quickly to the changes is the key. If we can do that we can overcome a major hurdle.”Headingley, the venue for the first Test, has fond memories for Mathews and eight others in the present squad – they beat England there two summers ago by 100 runs. That victory gave Sri Lanka their first series win in England, not counting standalone Tests. Karunaratne, Silva, Thirimanne, Dinesh Chandimal, Dhammika Prasad, Shaminda Eranga, Nuwan Pradeep and Dilruwan Perera, along with Mathews and Herath, are those in the present squad who had also toured in 2014.Mathews had a memorable series that year, scoring a hundred in his first appearance at Lord’s in the first Test, a match Sri Lanka drew with one wicket in hand. In the next match, Mathews’ monumental hundred laid the foundation for that historic win. He achieved career-best performances with both bat and ball in that match – his 160 was preceded by 4 for 44 in England’s first innings.”It was my first tour of England and I managed to adjust to the conditions and come out on top,” Mathews said. “I expect the same with the present crop of players, most of whom are alien to English conditions.”I am quite confident we can achieve the same result this time around. I know that we are a bit on the inexperienced side without the likes of Sanga [Kumar Sangakkara] and Mahela [Jayawardene] but I won’t say that batting is the weak point … maybe in experience, yes. This team is prepared to take on anyone with their fearless approach.”Preparations for the tour have been good, I am very happy the way we have gone about it. We left a lot of grass on the pitches we practiced on, and we started practice very early in the morning so that the bowlers were able to get some swing on the ball, especially up in Pallekele.”

Harmeet six-for keeps Mumbai hopes alive

Harmeet Singh’s career-best returns of 6 for 139 kept Mumbai’s hopes of a quarterfinal spot alive on the third day of their game against Karnataka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai

The Report by Amol Karhadkar08-Feb-2015
ScorecardR Samarth brought up his maiden first-class hundred on the third day, the third batsman to do so in this match•PTI

Left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh’s career-best innings returns of 6 for 139 kept Mumbai’s hopes of a quarterfinal spot alive on the third day of their game against Karnataka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.Harmeet’s haul helped Mumbai stage a remarkable comeback and earn a vital first-innings lead against Karnataka and the left-arm spinner sparked a Karnataka collapse that saw the visitors lose their last six wickets for 78 runs. Karnataka were bowled out for 415, 21 runs short of Mumbai’s first-innings total.Karnataka lost Manish Pandey to Harmeet in the second over of the day but at lunch were on course to overhaul Mumbai’s total of 436. R Samarth had converted his unbeaten 85 into a maiden first-class century – the third batsman to score a maiden first-class hundred in this match – and debutant Shishir Bhavane had raced to a sparkling fifty, taking the team to 293 for 3.Mumbai had, however, applied the brakes a few overs before lunch with restrictive lines that dried up the runs, especially against Bhavane who was scoring at will until he crossed fifty. After the break, as the new ball started to lose its shine, Mumbai continued with the same tactics. While pacers Shardul Thakur and Balwinder Singh Sandhu bowled wide of off-stump, Harmeet and offspinner Akshay Girap pitched outside leg. This forced Samarth, who was playing a sedate knock, to go into a shell. The ploy ensured Karnataka scored only 27 runs off 22 overs in the first hour after lunch, losing Bhavane as the debutant edged Sandhu behind the wicket. About half an hour before tea, Shyreas Gopal, Karnataka’s standout batsman of the season, tried to break the shackles with a full-blooded sweep off Girap but Abhishek Nayar leapt and pulled off a one-handed catch at square leg.Even at 337 for 5, Karnataka were not really in trouble. With Samarth looking good for a double-century and CM Gautam, arguably the most reliable No 7 on the domestic circuit, at the crease, Karnataka continued their march towards Mumbai’s total. In the last over before tea, Harmeet started the collapse.Gautam tried to fend one that was pitched on the leg stump but the ball rose slightly to take the edge of his bat to Suryakumar Yadav at first-slip. Karnataka at that stage were 78 runs adrift of the target and were hoping for captain Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun – both decent batsmen – to see them through along with Samarth. The tide turned in Mumbai’s favour soon after tea as Harmeet bowled the ball of the innings in the seventh over after the break. The ball rose sharply and surprised Samarth, and lobbed to Yadav off the shoulder of the bat. That wicket allowed Mumbai to put pressure and despite Mithun’s 21-ball 22, Karnataka fell short of earning at least three points. Harmeet picked up four wickets in 31 balls either side of the tea break. The only scare Mumbai had was when Udit Patel was dropped off Shardul Thakur, at second slip by Shreyas Iyer. Karnataka were 411 for 8 then. But Harmeet, who had earlier completed his second five-wicket haul by fooling Vinay through flight, trapped Patel in front of the wicket in the next over. Thakur then completed the rout by forcing a nick off S Aravind’s willow and burst into a wild sprint towards the Sunil Gavaskar pavilion.

Australians eye World Cup positions

The five-match ODI series against South Africa that begins in Perth on Friday will be the last World Cup audition chance for Australia’s fringe players

‘No pressure being World Cup hosts’ – Bailey

If February 14 seems a long way off, you’re clearly not an Australian selector. That is the date that Australia begin their World Cup campaign against England at the MCG and opportunities to assess players ahead of the tournament are fast running out; World Cup squads must be finalised before the time the tri-series with India and England starts on January 16.That means the five-match ODI series against South Africa that begins in Perth on Friday will be the last audition chance for Australia’s fringe players. The batting line-up seems largely settled with David Warner, Aaron Finch, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke, George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell and Steven Smith all part of the squad to play South Africa, and all likely to feature at the World Cup.Kane Richardson, George Bailey and Nathan Coulter-Nile at the launch of the one-day series in Perth•Getty Images

There is no shortage of batting backup either, with Phillip Hughes and Cameron White both capable of stepping straight into the side if called up, although neither are in the squad for the first two ODIs. Matthew Wade is expected to keep wicket through the South African series while Brad Haddin recovers from his shoulder injury sustained against Pakistan, but Haddin will be the gloveman at the World Cup.But the bowling group is not quite as clear-cut. World Cup probables James Faulkner and Mitchell Starc were left out of the first two ODIs to allow them some Sheffield Shield time ahead of the Tests against India. There is also no Nathan Lyon, given the first two games are at the WACA. But for men like Nathan Coulter-Nile, Josh Hazlewood and Kane Richardson, this is a big chance to press a World Cup case.”I wouldn’t like to be a selector at the moment, looking at our group and we’ve got a lot of guys around the country playing some good cricket,” vice-captain Bailey said. “There’s this group itself playing good cricket. It’s going to be hard to nut that out. The players are going to have the performances that they themselves need to put on the board in the back of their minds as well as actually playing really well as a team.”Not only are individual performances important over the five-match series, but so is Australia’s team form given they lost the recent tri-series final to South Africa in Zimbabwe. By the end of this month they will have played 16 matches against South Africa across all formats in 2014 and the Australians hope that another series against the world’s No.2-ranked ODI side – Australia are No.3 – will be ideal World Cup preparation.”There’s every chance that they’ll be featuring at the back end of the World Cup, so this will be a really good starting point to find out exactly where we are as a team,” Bailey said. “I think we are two of the stronger teams going around. We’re two teams very much gunning to try and win a World Cup in a couple of months … There’s a lot of bragging rights on the line and the cricket played will reflect that.”It will also provide Clarke the chance to move on from the disappointing tour of the UAE, where his men were humiliated in both Tests against Pakistan, which led to some criticism of Clarke’s captaincy and form. Bailey said he expected Clarke to bounce back strongly back on home soil.”If you look at his record it speaks for itself,” Bailey said. “It’s obviously a position people care a lot about. The Australian cricket team means a lot to a lot of people, so that’s a great thing for cricket. But I’ll back Pup to the hilt in terms of his performance and what he’s done.”If you look at his record as a player, he responds pretty well to pressure and generally goes out and does the one thing, and that’s score big runs. The hard thing to look at is just how different the conditions were they’ve just come from. I’m backing him to respond the one way that we know he does, and that’s with steely determination and big runs. When he’s doing that, that’s a great thing for us to feed off us a group.”

.==========

Tom Moody, the former Australia allrounder, has been appointed Melbourne Renegades’ director of cricket for the fourth edition of the BBL. Moody will be responsible for talent identification, recruitment and list management.Moody, 48, will continue his coaching duties with IPL side Sunrisers Hyderabad. In February, he was appointed the Caribbean Premier League’s director of cricket.”I’ve admired Tom’s coaching and man-management from afar for many years,” Renegades head coach Simon Helmot said. “Last season I enjoyed the privilege of assisting him at Sunrisers Hyderabad during the Indian Premier League. It was a wonderful learning experience, and one I’m looking forward to repeating when this year’s IPL begins this week.”To have Tom working with the Renegades as director of cricket is a real boon for the club. It also takes a lot of pressure off me, as coach, and our CEO Stuart Coventry, knowing that this newly-created role will be filled by such a capable T20 tactician.”After retiring from international cricket, Moody had worked as Worcestershire’s director of cricket before taking over as Sri Lanka coach in 2005. He quit in 2007 before coaching Western Australia, till 2010.
