He is currently working with former fast-bowler Sarfraz Nawaz at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. “I am working hard to get more control when bowling with the new ball,” Riaz said. “Unfortunately I didn’t get enough chances to bowl against England, but I am confident that I will be an improved bowler in the Asia Cup.”Riaz, 26, had a memorable Test debut, taking a five-for against England in August 2010, and made a further impact in limited-overs cricket by collecting his maiden ODI five-for in the World Cup semi-final against India. Regular showers and fading light allowed only 25.3 overs on the second day in Bridgetown, but there was enough time for Ishant Sharma to extend his domination of Ramnaresh Sarwan, and for Marlon Samuels and Shivnarine Chanderpaul to show discipline and prevent an impressive Praveen Kumar from inflicting even more telling blows. Ishant also removed the nightwatchman Devendra Bishoo before taking Sarwan out for a third time in 24 deliveries in this series.Early-morning showers meant there was moisture in the pitch; the ball was only 12-overs old, and the bowlers fresh. It was always going to be a tough first session – shortened by 45 minutes – and it showed in how Ishant had both Sarwan and Bishoo edging through, and just over, a catching cordon that could have been more alert.Sarwan’s nick flew not too far over Suresh Raina’s head at third slip, Bishoo’s went not too far to the left of M Vijay at third slip, but neither man went for the catch. MS Dhoni provided for the second contingency by crowding the cordon so much there was no gap left between him and the gully. The bounce that Ishant extracted was too much for Bishoo, and soon enough he steered one straight to gully, ending the 23-run fourth-wicket partnership. Sarwan, not at all at ease with the bounce and the movement, found himself caught at the crease to a full inswinger two balls later, the second time he has been trapped by Ishant’s inward movement.With his accuracy and swing either way, Praveen was in the middle of an even better spell, beating both edges of the bat, making batsmen play regularly. That West Indies could still think of a first-innings lead was down to good defensive batting from Samuels and Chanderpaul, who batted 19.3 overs for just 41 runs. They both played as late as possible – if they had to – and even when Samuels edged Praveen once he did so with soft hands, just teasing the cordon.Runs mainly come in nudges, deflections and no-balls (five of them), but Samuels was also alert to loose deliveries. Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the respected insider revealed that the Englishman is on David Moyes’ transfer shortlist ahead of this summer, with the Hammers seeking a new midfield addition as club captain Mark Noble departs at the end of the season.

Asked whether the 26-year-old was a target for the London Stadium outfit, Jones revealed that: “He definitely is on Moyes’ list. Moyes is a big admirer of him.

“You’ve got to consider every asset of the game, and it’s technical ability, but also willingness to work and carry out instructions, and Josh Brownhill could actually slot really nicely into that West Ham midfield.”

This season, in particular, has seen the £45k-per-week playmaker catch the eye despite the club’s struggles, netting twice and adding three assists in 32 league outings so far this term.

A real box-to-box presence, the Warrington-born star has also been impressive defensively, averaging 1.9 interceptions, two tackles and 1.2 clearances per 90 in the top-flight during the 2021/22 campaign, while he also ranks in the top 28% for aerial duels won among midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues.

Such form has seen him earn praise from pundit Lee Hendrie, who dubbed him a “fabulous player”, with it no surprise that West Ham are seemingly keeping tabs on his progress.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist and transfer insider Pete O’Rourke had this to say about Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez and the possibility of him leaving the club in the summer.

He said: “He’s on that long-term contract. He’s on a good deal at Aston Villa as well wages wise, so it would have to take big, big money to try and prise him away from Villa.

“I think Villa have no plans to let him go, either. They want to keep him and sort of build around the likes of Martinez going forward because Steven Gerrard wants to have a really competitive team.”

Fans will be delighted

Villa signed the shot-stopper back in the 2020 summer transfer window from fellow Premier League side Arsenal in a deal worth a reported fee of £17m.

Since then, the Argentine has become a significant figure for the club as their number one goalkeeper, making 70 appearances across all competitions.

In those appearances, the 29-year-old has managed to keep 25 clean sheets.

Having won the Supporters’ Player of the Season award at the end of his debut campaign at the Midlands club, this shows just what a great signing he has been.

To highlight how crucial he was for the Villans last season, only Nick Pope (77%) ended the campaign with a higher save percentage than the former Arsenal goalkeeper (76.8%).

Taking this into account and the fact that he’s made a total of 76 saves in 31 league games this time around, it will surely be music to the ears of plenty at Villa Park that the club have no intention of letting him leave this summer.

Also, the fact that the Argentina international’s current contract at Villa isn’t set to expire until the summer of 2027 should also put to bed any concerns there may be about his future.
