The Big PictureThe cricket is going to be a sideshow to the festivities. It’s Makhaya Ntini’s farewell match, which is enough to charge the occasion with emotion. Sachin Tendulkar is going to be honoured for continued contribution to the progress of cricket. The match also forms part of the commemoration of 150 years of Indians in South Africa and tribute will also be paid to the South African team who toured India in 1991. All that will end with a Bollywood extravaganza. It’s a magical stage for such an occasion. The Moses Mabhida Stadium, best recognised by its arch, has been talked up as one of the most beautiful venues built for the Football World Cup. It’s doesn’t have the dimensions of an international cricket field and the straight boundaries are particularly short, which means boundary hitting may be the order of the day.The pitch, which was laid the day after the World Cup semi-final on 7 July between Spain and Germany, may not be singing the same tune. It’s rumoured to sustain only knee-high bounce and is quite slow. During a practice match in mid-December, players said they found cutters to be effective but not the short ball. The match has been sold out with over 50,000 fans expected to pack into the stadium. It will be the biggest attendance for a cricket match on the African continent.Form guide(most recent first)

Watch out for…It’s only the third Twenty20 Hashim Amla is playing. The first two were in 2009 and he has since injected a lot of pace into his game. His one-day international strike rate is up to 93.38 and he had a string of powerful performances recently against Pakistan in UAE.Makhaya Ntini has his last chance to impress in international cricket. His is not a veteran in this format, having played just nine internationals. Even if he doesn’t pick up a single wicket in the match, the emotion that will flow from each ball he bowls and every move he makes is going to be electric.Suresh Raina looked like a deer caught in the headlights during the Centurion Test. The floodlights will be on for this game, and this is the format where he feels much more comfortable. He has more than a point to prove, and could not have asked for a bigger stage.Team newsGraeme Smith has been ruled out of the match because of bruising to his hand caused by a hit from Sreesanth in the Cape Town Test. Morne van Wyk, from the Knights franchise, takes his place. With the wicket calling for at least two spinners, Robin Petersen is certain to play with one of the quicks due to miss out. Everton team news vs Liverpool

The Liverpool Echo journalist Tony Scott has now dropped a big Everton team news claim before they play Liverpool away from home in the Premier League.

The Lowdown: Team news

Speaking to the media in his pre-game press conference ahead of the Merseyside derby, Frank Lampard confirmed that both Donny van de Beek and Andre Gomes have ‘small injuries’, and so will not play.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He was also asked if Yerry Mina will be risked having just come back from injury in the 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City last time out, to which he said that they will make a decision ‘closer to the game’:

“It’s a decision I have to make closer to the game. We have to understand we’ve got six more games after this.”

The Latest: Scott reacts

Taking to Twitter, Scott has now given his reaction to Lampard’s comments, claiming that he does not think that Mina will be risked for the derby:

“From Lampard’s quotes today it looks increasingly likely that Yerry Mina won’t be risked for the derby. The defender has completed 2 matches for Everton since October so it’s crucial he’s match fit for the more ‘winnable’ games.”

The Verdict: Big Blow

It would certainly be a big blow if Mina is not able to play a part against their bitter rivals.

At a colossal six-foot-five, his presence is so key for the backline, as the Colombia international has ranked highly among his teammates in terms of average aerial duels won, clearances and blocks made per game in the Premier League so far this season (WhoScored).

It is likely that the Toffees will have to do a lot of defending at Anfield, and their defence is certainly stronger with Mina in it.

Estiveram no encontro as embaixadas deVila Velha, Mimoso, Castelo, Guarapari, Colatina, Cachoeiro e a FlaPixaba.

Taylor, Hales and Prior star as runs flow

North Group

Half-centuries from Alex Hales and Samit Patel eclipsed a brilliant hundred from Wes Durston as the Nottinghamshire romped past Derbyshire by five wickets with three overs to spare. Durston hit 111 off 59 balls, with seven sixes and 11 fours for the first century of this season’s Friends Provident t20, as the Trent Bridge visitors amassed an intimidating 192 for six. But Hales smashed 69 from just 25 balls – including three sixes and 11 fours – in partnership with Ali Brown as Nottinghamshire raced to 99 off the first seven overs of their reply before both batsmen fell in consecutive overs. Patel ensured there was no chance of the momentum being lost with a classy innings containing seven fours and three more sixes and was there at the close to complete the victory, finishing on 62 not outRoss Taylor and Ian Blackwell trumped Warwickshire with high-powered half-centuries as Durham registered their first Friends Provident t20 win of the season by 15 runs at Edgbaston. New Zealander Taylor romped to 64 from only 28 balls and Blackwell went on to make 79, the highest score by a Durham batsman and a platform for the Dynamos to go beyond 200 for the first time in short-form cricket. Ian Bell’s 47-ball 85 wasn’t enough in a tough run chase but showed why he has been recalled to England’s one-day squad.Leicestershire spin duo Brad Hodge and Claude Henderson ended Lancashire‘s unbeaten start to their Friends Provident t20 campaign with a 14-run win at Old Trafford. The home side were reasonably well placed in their pursuit of 142 at 63 for 1 in the 10th over but they slipped to 104 for 7 in the 18th with Henderson and Hodge the catalysts. Offspinner Hodge, who spent four seasons as Lancashire’s overseas player ending in 2008, took 2 for 16 from his four overs and Henderson 2 for 19. Captain Matthew Hoggard also claimed 3 for 19 as Lancashire finished 127 for 9. The visitors have now won two North Division matches on the bounce.Chaminda Vaas starred with bat and ball as Northamptonshire finally broke their duck in this year’s Friends Provident t20 with a 21-run win over Worcestershire. He hit a fluent 54, including three huge sixes, as a makeshift opener as the hosts posted a total of 143 for 8 from their 22 overs. Vaas went on to grab two wickets with the ball as Northamptonshire ended a run of three straight defeats by restricting the visitors to 122 for 8

South Group

Emergency skipper Adam Gilchrist answered the Middlesex call by cracking a 47-ball century to ease the visitors to a comfortable six-wicket Friends Provident t20 win over Kent at Canterbury. The 38-year Australian Test great was thrust into the captaincy role following Shaun Udal’s mid-afternoon resignation and responded by smashing 106, with nine fours and seven sixes.Kieron Pollard and Alfonso Thomas demolished Hampshire, who lost their last six wickets for four runs to slide to a sensational last-over defeat in their Friends Provident t20 clash at the Rose Bowl. In a low-scoring match, Hampshire were poised for victory at 93 for 4, requiring only another 11 runs in almost four overs to see off Somerset‘s challenge. But Thomas and Pollard came on, and Hampshire fell away in spectacular style to lose by six runs with four balls remaining.Matt Prior issued a powerful message to the England selectors as reigning champions Sussex beat Gloucestershire by seven wickets to strengthen their position at the top of the Friends Provident t20 Southern Division. Left out of England’s 13-man one-day international squad earlier this week, Prior smashed an unbeaten 90 from 49 balls to help the reigning champions chase down a victory target of 167 with more than four overs to spare as county cricket returned to Gloucester’s Kings School for the first time since 2008.Mark Cosgrove and Tom Maynard powered Glamorgan to a superb seven-wicket victory over Essex in their Friends Provident t20 match at Chelmsford. The duo combined in a thrilling partnership of 97 in only 50 balls to set up victory with 14 deliveries to spare after Essex had posted a total of 191 for 6. Cosgrove plundered 89 from 55 balls, with the help of 13 fours and two sixes, although he had one slice of good fortune when he was put down at short third man by David Masters when 44. Maynard finished with an unbeaten 66 from 30 balls, with four fours and six sixes, the last of which saw the Welsh county to their third win in the competition in as many matches.

Celtic: Dundee want Leigh Griffiths on permanent transfer

Celtic forward Leigh Griffiths is wanted by Dundee in a permanent deal, The Herald report.

The Lowdown: Soon-to-be free agent

Recent reports have suggested that the Hoops have terminated the 31-year-old’s contract at Parkhead, however, the club are yet to confirm this.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As things stand, Griffiths, labelled as ‘amazing’ by Alex McLeish, is still technically a Celtic player, with his deal set to expire in the summer.

He’s been on loan at Dundee during the 2021/22 campaign, scoring twice in 14 games, and it seems as if he is wanted on a permanent deal at Dens Park.

The Latest: Full-time move

According to The Herald, Dundee manager James McPake is determined to keep Griffiths until the end of the season.

Parkhead chiefs have spoken to Griffiths and agreed that they will cancel his contract early, with a permanent move to Dundee as a free agent on the cards at the end of the month.

The Verdict: Good decision

Even though Griffiths penned fresh terms after Ange Postecoglou arrived, things have quickly changed and he is no longer needed at Parkhead, so cutting ties is the right call.

The Hoops have brought in Kyogo Furuhashi, Giorgos Giakoumakis, Daizen Maeda and youngster Johnny Kenny as central attacking options after Griffiths extended his stay, so they have more than enough without the Scot.

He’s been a great servant to the club, scoring 123 goals in green and white in 262 appearances and winning 14 major honours, but now is the time to move on for good and look to the future.

Shaun Marsh moves closer to IPL return

Shaun Marsh will be in India by the weekend provided he can convince Cricket Australia his injured back is fully healed

Shaun Marsh will be in India by the weekend provided he can convince Cricket Australia his injured back is fully healed. The opener Marsh, who was the batting star of the first IPL, has been troubled by a bulging disc problem for the past five weeks and the injury interrupted his Australian one-day ambitions for the second year in a row.If he can prove his recovery to Kevin Sims, the Cricket Australia physiotherapist, on Friday, Marsh will try to get on a flight that night or on Saturday morning and begin his road back with Kings XI Punjab. “Hopefully I’ll get the all-clear, which I’m really confident of doing, and get over to play some cricket in India,” Marsh told Cricinfo.”It’s perfect to get away and play over there, it’s a little bit more relaxed than playing international cricket, so I want to get over there and have a little bit of fun and enjoy it. I’ll see what happens after that.”Initially it was thought Marsh suffered back spasms in the warm-up before the third ODI against West Indies last month, but the injury was diagnosed as a painful bulging disc. It was another untimely setback for Marsh, who was floored by long-term hamstring injuries last year, just as he was becoming a fixture at the top of the one-day order. In 26 ODIs he averages 37.96 and made starts in all eight matches against Pakistan and West Indies this summer, with his scores ranging for 12 to 83.The latest issue has forced a change in his approach to fitness for Marsh, who is still only 26. “The last year I’ve had these injuries and it’s made me realise I have to start look after my body a little bit better,” he said. “I probably really haven’t worried about it too much. This has given me a little bit of a kick up the bum that I make sure I do everything right, with recovery and gym work and that sort of stuff. I see it as a minor setback.”Shane Watson, who seems to have overcome his injury plague, has offered Marsh support with his problems. Marsh has not followed Watson into a life full of pilates and free of alcohol, but he has restructured his training and wants to build on the outlook in India.Punjab are currently win-less after two games and have matches on Sunday and Tuesday, which Marsh could be part of. He was the surprise of the first IPL, topping the run list with 616 at a strike-rate of 139.68, but he didn’t play in the second event due to his hamstring problems.Later in this campaign he hopes to run into his little brother Mitchell, the 18-year-old signed with Deccan Chargers. “He had a fantastic year this year, he came on in leaps and bounds,” Shaun said. “Hopefully I’ll get over there and play against him.”Mitchell left Perth for India on Tuesday and the brothers’ franchises are due to face each other on April 16. By then Shaun will know how his body has coped with the extra demands of his rehabilitation.

Phil Hay drops Leeds United transfer update

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has delivered the latest on Leeds United’s transfer plans for the upcoming January transfer window.

What’s the story?

During a Q&A for the Premier League clash against Manchester City on Tuesday night, a fan raised the possibility of Marcelo Bielsa’s side entering the January market for some new signings.

And in response, Hay said: “The intention is there after the injury to Phillips. But it will depend on budget and available options. You know the drill.”

Victor Orta must act

A combination of injuries and just pure rotten form has meant that the January transfer window has taken more importance than perhaps it has ever done under Bielsa’s tenure at Elland Road.

They sit 16th in the table at the moment and have only won two of their last 11 matches.

Premier League safety, therefore, is absolutely paramount, and strengthening the squad to ensure that Bielsa’s side aren’t hit as hard as they have been by injuries and illness is crucial.

The likes of Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford, among many others, have been and will be out for extended periods of time, and it’s no surprise that people have implored the club to act.

Speaking to Football Insider, Danny Mills said: “Who is next after Phillips? They have to consider that. He’s their star man and that is something they need to think about in the long term. Whether it is right to bring that person in January, there’s some debate over that.

“Is that the most important thing? What sort of players can you really get in January? Players get injured after international duty in November and December. You don’t need a degree in sports science to tell you that. That little bit of fatigue can make the difference.”

News that Leeds do now have the intention to sign players is sure to excite fans, especially when you consider that even just recently, it was being suggested that the Whites wouldn’t be that active in the transfer market.

Meanwhile, Leeds are eyeing this Uruguayan star…

Celtic: Moffat set for Championship loan

Celtic youngster Owen Moffat is being lined up for a temporary January move away from Parkhead, Kieran Devlin reports.

The Lowdown: Attacking injuries

Ange Postecoglou currently has a number of attacking players out injured, with James Forrest the latest to pick up a knock in the 1-0 win over Motherwell.

He joins Albian Ajeti, Giorgos Giakoumakis, Kyogo Furuhashi, Jota and Karamoko Dembele on the injury table.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-19/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Moffat is still awaiting his competitive Celtic debut, however, he caught the eye of Callum McGregor in pre-season after the teenager scored against Sheffield Wednesday, with the club captain labelling Moffat as ‘first class’.

The Latest: Devlin’s claim

Devlin ran a Q&A on The Athletic on Wednesday prior to the Hoops’ Scottish Premiership meeting with Ross County.

One supporter asked Devlin how far away Moffat is from first-team action, to which he said:

“Source suggests they might try and get him a loan in January, potentially a Scottish Championship side.”

The Verdict: The right call?

Celtic’s injured attackers will eventually return, so if Moffat was going to feature in a matchday squad under Postecoglou this season, you’d expect he would’ve already had the chance.

On that basis, moving the 19-year-old out on loan for the second half of the season could be a wise move in the long run.

It’ll give him the chance to play regular senior football in the next stage of his career, and an impressive spell in the second tier could lead to first-team involvement at Parkhead in 2021/22.

In other news: Ange now eyes ‘really important’ 4th January target; movement ‘over the next few days’.
