A relaxed and refreshed Sri Lanka are looking forward to the new experience of playing in the United States this weekend, according to the batsman Mahela Jayawardene. It’s a week since they lost their World Twenty20 semi-final to the eventual champions England, and while the time off wasn’t exactly part of their plan it has given them time to focus on this weekend’s Twenty20s against New Zealand in Florida.”We wouldn’t have wanted to have that much downtime, obviously we would have wanted to go all the way in the tournament,” Jayawardene said. “After a long season it’s been good time off for some of the guys to recuperate and get their rehab and strengthening done before we start all over again.”Miami is a new place for all of us. Most of the guys haven’t been to the States. We’ve had a look around, went to a baseball game. I’m looking forward to it. It looks like a very decent venue. It’s something different, going out of your routine of playing against top nations in venues you’re quite familiar with. It will be good fun.”The matches on Saturday and Sunday will be the first internationals held in the United States. The venue, Central Broward Park in Lauderhill, is an impressive looking stadium and Ross Taylor, the New Zealand batsman, said the conditions at the ground were a mystery to the players.”The wicket is under cover at the moment,” Taylor said. “There’s a New Zealand groundsman here looking after it and preparing it. To be honest, we don’t really know what to expect but I’m sure it will be a decent Twenty20 wicket.”The stadium was opened in November 2007 and it has taken a strategic partnership between New Zealand Cricket and the USA Cricket Association for top-level teams to finally make the trip to Florida. Don Lockerbie, the chief executive of the USACA, hopes this series will be the first of many to be held in the US.”We’ve been waiting a long time for this,” Lockerbie said. “This is part of what we’ve been calling Destination USA. We took, with the board’s help, a view to try and bring in the best teams in the world and show that the United States is open for business as far as cricket is concerned.”We have the stadiums, the only full- fledged cricket stadium in North America. With other temporary improvements it could one day hold up to 20,000 people. We’re hoping we can get a good crowd this weekend and fill it up to 5000 to 8000 seats a game and show that down the road we want to see more teams come and play and get the whole US experience and the cricket experience can grow in the US.”

'Mendis was left out for tactical reasons' – de Silva

Tillakaratne Dilshan, Sri Lanka’s stand-in captain, has said he is thrilled with the performances of youngsters like wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Chandimal and allrounder Jeewan Mendis

Sa'adi Thawfeeq10-Jun-2010Aravinda de Silva, Sri Lanka’s chairman of selectors, said poor form was the reason for Sanath Jayasuriya’s exclusion from the team for the Asia Cup, while Ajantha Mendis was left out for “tactical reasons”.”Sanath has not had a decent run lately we sidelined him after considering his performance over the past one year,” de Silva said. “The decision to leave Mendis out was for tactical reasons. There are certain decisions we took for tactical reasons. Those areas I wouldn’t want the opposition or any other team to know. It was discussed among the captain and the team management. I will talk to the players individually and explain to them so that they know why we have taken such a decision.”Jayasuriya’s miserable form with the bat continued at the World Twenty20 where he averaged 3.75 from six matches, leading to speculation about his future in the side. Mendis played a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s victory in the recently concluded tri-series in Zimbabwe, so his exclusion for the Asia Cup was met with surprise. The selectors also gave unexpected call-ups to allrounder Farveez Maharoof and left-arm spinner Rangana Herath.”When we talk of allrounders there are two types: a bowling allrounder and a batting allrounder. Angelo Mathews is a batting allrounder and we wanted a bowling allrounder so we picked Maharoof,” de Silva said.”We took Maharoof’s record in Dambulla and he had performed well in the conditions there. When he was injured he couldn’t play many matches and some of the matches he played were while he was recovering which we have also considered. Now that he is 100% fit we will look at his performance from now on,” he said.Herath, De Silva stated was added to the bowling to lend it some variety. “We wanted some variation in the bowling attack. Since we are playing seven games at Dambulla the pitch might take turn towards the end of the tournament so we should have some sort of variation within the squad in case we need to have a bowler who bowls left-arm spin. Also Pakistan has got a fair bit of right-handers. We needed a bowler who will be able to bowl during the Powerplays. That’s the reason why we have gone for him with his experience.”De Silva said that the Sri Lankan batting line-up looked solid with a line up consisting of Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Angelo Mathews, Chamara Kapugedera and Thilina Kandamby. When media personnel raised the question why two youngsters – Dinesh Chandimal and Jeevan Mendis – who performed well in Zimbabwe were not included, de Silva said, “Chandimal and Jeevan have got great potential. It was very heartening to see them perform the way they did. We are playing three games initially in the Asia Cup and when you look at the team for the first two games they might not get the opportunity to play.”If that happens we are depriving them of the opportunity to go and get some exposure in Australia. We thought the best idea would be to allow them to go to Australia with the Sri Lanka A team and play there. That’s one tour I will follow very closely which I think will be competitive. It will really separate the men from the boys, a tour of Australia,” de Silva said.

Forget McGregor: Celtic must sign Kendouci

2021 was an extremely unkind year to Celtic Football Club and the Hoops’ supporters.

It was a year that saw Neil Lennon lose his job as the Bhoys surrendered their dominance of Scottish football, handing over the title to their fiercest rivals.

Ange Postecoglou did arrive and sealed a League Cup victory but 2022 hasn’t exactly started out perfectly.

The Australian coach has added the likes of Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi to his ranks but there is a feeling that more transfer business could be concluded.

That’s because Celtic may already be working with a depleted squad just two matches it into the calendar year.

Callum McGregor suffered a severe facial injury in the win over Alloa Athletic on Saturday while Liel Abada had to hobble and Ideguchi also sustained some sort of injury too.

Couple that with Maeda’s international call up for Japan just in time for the Old Firm and it doesn’t paint a vibrant picture of availability in Postecoglou’s ranks.

Thus, the window could be exploited once again before it slams shut next week.

In order to combat injury blows to McGregor and Ideguchi in the middle of the park, the Glaswegian outfit must try their best to force through a late move for Ahmed Kendouci.

Also touted with Rangers, it’s thought the Celtic-linked midfielder handed in a transfer request earlier this week. That’s a situation Postecoglou simply has to take advantage of in the coming days, luring what would be another exciting signing to Parkhead.

The Algerian is just 22 years of age but has a plethora of qualities and attributes that would benefit Celtic.

First and foremost, the youngster is capable of playing all across the midfield, whether it’s in a holding role or more advanced. That has seen him score an impressive three strikes from a deep-lying role for ES Setif in the top tier of Algerian football this term.

Furthermore, stats first shared in September demonstrate how he’s not just effective in the final third, but also supremely combative in physical battles. He had made 96 recoveries and 46 interceptions, showing his ability to win back possession. With that in mind, he’d have loved the contest against Alloa just a few days ago.

Bullish in defensive duels, Kendouci is also a graceful midfield player. Known as a risk-taking ball carrier who can play defence-spitting passes, talent scout Jacek Kulig hailed his mesmerising feet last summer, saying that his left foot is “made of gold.”

With that in mind, Kendouci very much appears to be a sensible signing for Celtic this winter, especially when you consider the long-term blow to McGregor.

AND in other news, Celtic can finally axe the “new Ryan Christie” by signing £3.5m “Jota-type trickster”…

Urgent Kallis turns to oxygen aid

Allrounder using an oxygen chamber to try and speed his recovery from the fractured rib that has threatened his participation in the opening Test

Andrew McGlashan in East London10-Dec-2009Jacques Kallis is using an oxygen chamber to try and speed his recovery from the fractured rib that has threatened his participation in the opening Test against England at Centurion Park.Kallis suffered the injury during the Champions League Twenty20 in October and was ruled out of the recent one-day series. It is a race against time to get him fit for the opening five-day encounter, with some suggestions that he may struggle to make the starting XI in any capacity or be unable to bowl during the four-match series. However, South Africa coach Mickey Arthur was not ruling out one of his key players and was still holding onto hope that he can play a part with the ball. He echoed Mike Proctor’s view after the convenor of selectors said Kallis was 50-50 to appear at Centurion Park, although Arthur was more positive about Kallis’ prospects as a batsman.”We certainly haven’t ruled him out of bowling during the series and we are still working hard with him ahead of the first Test,” Arthur told Cricinfo. “He has been using an oxygen chamber to try and speed the recovery and is doing extensive rehab every day.”At the moment the best-case scenario is that he bats and bowls at Centurion which is probably 50-50, the next best is that he just bats which is probably around 60-40 and the worst case scenario is that he is only fit for Durban.”Kallis would not be the first player to use oxygen therapy to aid recovery from injury. Simon Jones underwent similar treatment in 2005 when he was trying to be fit for the final Ashes Test although the process was ultimately unsuccessful for him. The benefit of the chambers is that they can supply 100% pure oxygen which helps the body fight injury compared with the normal air which contains only about 20% oxygen.Kallis played in the second Twenty20 international against England before the extent of the rib injury was confirmed. He will be fully assessed when the South African squad meets up in Potchefstroom on Friday for a three-day training camp. “Our priority was the Test series which is why he was pulled from the one-dayers so he didn’t do further damage,” Arthur said. “We will have a far better idea of where we stand on Sunday.”Arthur also confirmed that Dale Steyn was progressing well after his hamstring injury and that the paceman bowled six overs in the nets on Wednesday. Steyn was ruled out of the final two ODIs but now looks set to lead the pace attack alongside Makhaya Ntini, who will reach 100 caps, and probably Morne Morkel.

NUFC’s Saint-Maximin struggled v Burnley

Newcastle United finally managed to secure their much-needed first win of the season in the Premier League by beating fellow strugglers Burnley 1-0 at St. James’ Park.

A goal from striker Callum Wilson was enough to see off Sean Dyche’s side and grab all three points for the Toon after drawing 1-1 against Norwich City in midweek.

Despite the positive result, one Newcastle player that didn’t hit the heights that he may have been expected to hit on this occasion is Allan Saint-Maximin.

Even though the winger has three goals and three assists under his belt in the league and is currently listed as Newcastle’s highest-rated player with an overall rating of 7.16/10 according to WhoScored, he didn’t cover himself in glory on this occasion against Burnley.

In the 89 minutes he was on the pitch, Saint-Maximin had a total of 42 touches of the ball but could only complete 13 passes, misplacing one cross and one long ball in the process, losing possession of the ball 18 times in total.

The Frenchman, who has been described as being a “breathtaking” player in the past by pundit Gary Neville, also failed to test Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope on that many occasions as well by having just one clear shot at goal.

Additionally, Saint-Maximin, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £93k-per-week according to Salary Sport, only managed to win two of the 11 duels he was involved in.

This latest performance for the Toon ultimately earned Saint-Maximin an underwhelming overall match rating of 6.1/10 from SofaScore, making him the lowest-rated Newcastle player, showing that it just wasn’t his day on this occasion.

However, given how well Saint-Maximin has done for them prior to this game, a lot of Newcastle fans could be inclined to forgive and forget this performance, especially since Howe’s side managed to win the game.

Moving forward, with Newcastle having a very tough run of fixtures headed their way with the likes of Leicester City, Liverpool and the two Manchester clubs on the horizon, it’s safe to say that Saint-Maximin will have to make sure he’s in top form by the time these games come around to give Newcastle the best chance of getting some more points on the board and away from the relegation zone.

'Shattered' Hussey determined for comeback

Michael Hussey hopes his career-saving century at The Oval will have a similarly revitalising effect as Matthew Hayden’s corresponding innings four years ago

Alex Brown25-Aug-2009

Michael Hussey hopes his career-saving century at The Oval will have a revitalising effect similar to that of Matthew Hayden’s corresponding innings four years ago. Like Hayden in 2005, Hussey entered the final match of the Ashes series in the midst of a desperately barren run-scoring drought, but managed a fighting 121 that will almost certainly secure his place in the Australian top-order for their next Test assignments against West Indies and Pakistan.Hayden’s scratchy, attritional century at the Oval in 2005 spared him the selectors’ axe and triggered the most prolific two-year period of his international career. In the 21 Tests that followed his innings of 138, Hayden scored 2,015 runs at 55.97 including eight centuries. Hussey, having now broken a century-less streak that had spanned 28 Test innings, is hopeful of a similar knock-on effect.”He’s one of the greats of all time and I don’t want to put myself in that sort of mould,” Hussey said. “He had a great run – I think he scored six hundreds in a row after that hundred at The Oval. So I certainly hope so, but who knows? This game is amazing. Sometimes you feel like you can do everything right and it just does not seem to go your way. But then, like yesterday, when maybe things aren’t quite in your favour it just seems to click in your favour. I certainly hope that can be a springboard forward.”Asked whether he felt he was batting to save his Test career on Sunday, Hussey added: “Maybe a little bit. You obviously like to be contributing to the team as often as possible, and obviously I haven’t been contributing as well as I would have liked to. For me, it felt like it was meant to be. I had a fair bit of luck along the way. Whereas throughout the whole series I felt like I’ve been batting quite well but it just hasn’t seemed to go right, but yesterday for some reason – lap of the gods, really – everything fell into place.”I think you definitely have doubts, for sure. I do know my game and I just wanted to be true to my game and true to my preparations and stick to what I know does work for me. You’ve just got to have belief in that. I’ve had a lot of support from people; good, close friends from around the world. The common message all the time was to stick to what you know, keep believing in yourself, you are good enough. That’s all you can really do.”As with Hayden’s innings in 2005, Hussey’s century could not prevent Australia surrendering the Ashes urn. The frailties of a rebuilding team were ruthlessly exposed by Stuart Broad in a spell of supreme quality fast bowling on Saturday, and the tourists, faced with a world record fourth innings run chase, never recovered.Hussey’s innings may well be remembered as much for its role in the run-out of Ricky Ponting as his personal tally ending, as it did, Australia’s slim hopes of an historic victory on Sunday. His underestimation of Flintoff’s throwing arm accounted for Ponting’s wicket, and when Michael Clarke fell to a bizarre run-out six deliveries later, the Ashes had all but changed hands.”Sometimes I think you just hit it, call and go and you think half way down, ‘Oh no, is that a bit too tight?’ Obviously it was,” he said. “At tea time I wanted to walk down towards the gardeners’ shed and not back towards the dressing room. I didn’t want to go back to the dressing room and certainly the England players were saying, ‘I bet you’re not looking forward to going back to the dressing room at tea time.’ It’s part of the game unfortunately. Michael Clarke’s was obviously a pretty unlucky run-out as well.”I was shattered, absolutely shattered. I was pretty emotional at the end of it all, sitting down there. The boys had gone onto the ground, I was taking my pads off in the dressing room and it was pretty hard to take.”Australia’s defeat at The Oval ensured their surrender of the No. 1 Test ranking for the first time since 2003. South Africa, Sri Lanka and India are now rated superior to Ricky Ponting’s side in the five-day format, and Hussey admitted the revised assessment was a fair one.He did, however, predict a rapid rise for Australia. “I think this team has got a lot of improvement to go,” he said. “I think in the cold light of day we’re probably not the best team in the world and we’ve got to be honest with that. We’re a pretty young team and we’ve lost a lot of great players. There’s so much improvement to come from this team. I think we’ll get a lot of strength out of this series. It’s been a really tight series, and we’ll learn a lot and get better and better. I think we’ve got the making of another great Australian team.”You learn that there’s critical moments in games and series and you need to be able to seize those moments. The Australian teams in the past have been able to identify those moments and win those critical moments. It’s experience. I’m sure guys like Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Adam Gilchrist, Justin Langer, Damien Martyn probably made those same errors early in their careers, but they would have learned from those.”Having briefly considered standing down from the limited overs formats, Hussey this week reaffirmed his desire to represent Australia in all three forms of the game. He will be called upon to play a leading role in the forthcoming ODI matches against Scotland and England, with senior players including Ricky Ponting and Brad Haddin homeward bound.”We’ve got to bounce back pretty quickly,” he said. “We’ve got the one-day series to concentrate on now. We need to take a deep breath first, because this has been the climax of the summer. We’ve got to quickly get over it. It’s probably a good thing that we can get straight back into the cricket.”
