Players could force Zimbabwe boycott

South Africa’s cricketers are believed to have told their board that they will not play against Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s political isolation grows by the day, and the internal turmoil has had a depressingly inevitable impact on cricket with the likelihood of anyone agreeing to tour the country disappearing as the political situation worsens.Until now, Cricket South Africa has been resolutely supportive, but while the board maintains a policy of unwavering backing, the country’s cricketers appear far less pliable. The level of abuse as the presidential election run-off nears has persuaded many that enough is enough, and waverers have taken note of the passionate appeal by Archbishop Desmond Tutu for sportsmen to boycott the country.Norman Ardense has admitted that Zimbabwe was high on the agenda of the board meeting earlier this week, and he told a local paper that after that CSA would “pronounce what our stance on Zimbabwe will be … but for now I must stress that we take the Archbishop’s views seriously and our policy is to support Zimbabwean cricket.”The players might have taken the decision out of the board’s hands. It is believed that many leading cricketers have made clear that they will not support CSA if asked to play against Zimbabwe. One source close to Zimbabwe Cricket admitted that the political support for Zimbabwe from within the ICC and several major boards may come to nothing if players decide that enough is enough. That could force the ICC to take action when it meets at its annual conference later this month, although ZC probably still has enough friends to ensure the matter is again brushed aside.Zimbabwe has no scheduled cricket until the end of the year. Plans for a tour of Kenya have fallen through, although it remains to be seen if the government would have allowed the trip to go ahead anyway. Last weekend almost 40,000 fans chanted “Mugabe must go” when Kenya hosted the Zimbabwe national football side.It is also rumoured that Pakistan will be sending an A team in August, but given the virtual breakdown of civil order, that seems less and less likely by the day.

ICC mulls Test championship

The ICC is considering introducing a Test championship in order to ensure that a “special place is maintained for Test cricket in the calendar”

Cricinfo staff19-Jun-2008’Twenty20 will benefit ODIs’ – Dave Richardson “Already we have seen that the approach to the batting, fielding and bowling skills involved have to be improved if you want success in Twenty20. Those skills are going to have a direct benefit on 50-over cricket. I think 50-over cricket is the perfect balance between Tests and very short, action-filled Twenty20.”<!–

–>The ICC is considering a Test championship to ensure that, amid the increasing popularity of the Twenty20 format, “a special place is maintained for Test cricket in the calendar”.”The ICC will consider a number of options in the upcoming board meetings (in Dubai later this month), one of which is an option to introduce a Test championship or league,” the ICC’s acting chief executive, Dave Richardson, said at the launch ceremony of the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. The details of the championship, though, are yet to be worked out. “There are so many ways this could be done, a league over one year, two years or four years,” he said. “I am certainly in favour of looking at such an option to make sure we provide a good quality context for Test cricket to take place so that it can be preserved as the pinnacle of the game.”Richardson acknowledged that domestic Twenty20 leagues such as the IPL had been a “fantastic success” but maintained that international cricket remained the game’s highest level. “If you ask any player around the world what he would like to do, he would like to play Test cricket for his country.”The first ICC Test Championship was launched in May 2001 and was a ranking system based on the results of the most recent series (a minimum of two Tests constituted a series), home and away, between each of the teams. It was then revamped in 2003 to reflect the results of each Test, rather than an entire series, and also to take into account the strength of the opponents while awarding points.

'True reflection of my efforts last year' – Zaheer

Zaheer Khan has been felicitated on being named one of the Five Cricketers of the Year by Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack. In a short ceremony in Bangalore, Rahul Dravid presented Zaheer with a leatherbound copy of the 2008 almanack. Zaheer was recognised by Wisden as “the Indian left-armer who ended England’s six-year sequence of being unbeaten in home Test series”. Zaheer ended the three-Test series with 18 wickets at 20.33, and his 9 for 134 was instrumental in their victory in Nottingham, a win that set up the 1-0 triumph.Zaheer said the award was a true reflection of his efforts in the last year. He said that while he was not a great reader of cricket books he had been inspired after reading by his childhood idol Dennis Lillee. “Apart from Lillee, I have followed Glen McGrath, Allan Donald and Wasim Akram.”Dravid cited Zaheer’s performances as one of the chief reasons for India’s successes in England and South Africa. “Zaheer’s performance in England and the whole of the last year was truly exceptional,” he said. “He led the attack really well and that was critical to me as the captain. I could just throw the ball to him and I knew he would run in and lead the attack well.”I still remember the Test match we won in Trent Bridge,” he said off the match remembered for Zaheer getting fired up after seeing some jellybeans on the pitch. “The game was on a knife-edge: Michael Vaughan had just scored a hundred and they [England] were just behind us. We needed a wicket as chasing anything more than 150-160 last would have been tough task on that Trent Bridge wicket.”We needed some one to stand up and be counted. We took the new ball and Zaheer responded – he took three wickets in that spell which ensured that we won that Test match and the series. It’s a just reward for some one who started off with such promise in 2000 but had to endure injuries on the way. He has worked hard and is fighting back. India’s success depends on how well Zaheer does.”After Javagal Srinath, he has taken the mantle of leading the Indian attack. With a good new group of young bowlers coming through, Zaheer has an added responsibility to lead the attack for the next three years. I wish him all the best and hope he takes care of the injuries as he has all the talent and the nous required of a strike bowler.”Wisden chose Ian Bell, Ryan Sidebottom, Ottis Gibson and Shivnarine Chanderpaul alongside Zaheer for their outstanding achievements during the English season of 2007.

Everton transfer update on Richarlison

Lots of Everton fans have been flocking to a transfer update involving Richarlison.

Speaking on his Twitch channel (via The Everton End), Italian football journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed that there is ‘nothing’ between the Brazil international and Real Madrid, and Rafa Benitez is ‘convinced’ that the 24-year-old will remain on Merseyside for ‘at least one more season’.

This comes after a number of reports have recently linked Richarlison with a move to the Bernabeu to reunite with former manager Carlo Ancelotti.

The Brazilian did not have a great 2020/21 season, scoring just seven goals in the Premier League, and he was criticised by some Toffees supporters for a few of his performances. However, he remains a key player for Everton, scoring 42 times and supplying 10 assists in 119 matches in all competitions across the last three seasons for the club (Transfermarkt).

Sheffield United: Aaron Ramsdale set for Arsenal offer

Arsenal are set to make an offer for Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale as their hunt for a goalkeeper continues, as reported by the Daily Express.

The Lowdown: Sheffield United seek redemption in 2021/22

Moving into 2021/22, it will be intriguing to see how Sheffield United bounce back from their Premier League relegation last term.

Acquiring high-profile individuals could be imperative to mounting a promotion challenge, but keeping a hold of prize assets will also carry deep importance for newly-appointed manager Slavisa Jokanovic.

Could the Bramall Lane outfit now be set for a summer exit following recent reports?

The Latest: Arsenal prepare a formal approach for Ramsdale

Arsenal are said to be preparing an official bid for England international Ramsdale, as current stopper Bernt Leno has signified his ambition to move on to pastures new, paving the way for the north Londoners to approach the Blades’ 23-year-old with the lure of a return to top-flight football [Daily Express].

The 1.91m (6 foot 2) colossus has also been courted by Tottenham in recent weeks, according to the Daily Mail.

The Verdict: Losing Ramsdale would be a bitter blow

Arsenal’s planned transfer offer may come as a blow to the Sheffield United hierarchy, who will surely see Ramsdale as a big part of their plans moving forward. In 2020/21, the Englishman made 42 appearances for the Blades in all competitions, keeping six clean sheets and playing every minute of their Premier League campaign [Transfermarkt] along with earning a place in his country’s Euro 2020 squad.

Impressively, despite keeping a relatively low number of clean sheets for the top flight’s bottom club, Ramsdale made 147 saves across the season [premierleague.com], demonstrating his concentration between the sticks .

Once labelled as ‘incredible’ by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp [Yorkshire Live], the Yorkshiremen will be doing everything in their power to keep hold of their last line of defence.

In other news, one pundit talks up an ex-Sheffield United midfielder after he completed a move to a new club.

Tottenham Hotspur: Heung-min Son makes decision on Spurs future

Tottenham Hotspur winger Heung-min Son is set to remain with the club ahead of the 2021/22 season, after telling Nuno Espirito Santo that he’s looking forward to next term, according to Football Insider.

The lowdown: Son linked with Tottenham Hotspur departure

Son has caught the eye with a number of strong performances for Tottenham Hotspur over the years, with the winger scoring 107 goals in 280 appearances for the club so far.

It appears as though those impressive showings haven’t gone unnoticed though, with Bayern Munich reportedly previously being keen on reaching an agreement to land Son’s signature in the future.

Spurs reportedly offered Son a new contract worth more than £200,000 per-week, and he was close to agreeing a new five-year deal before Christmas 2020, but an agreement was never reached.

The latest: Decision made on Son’s short-term future

Despite talks over a new deal seemingly stalling, a Spurs source has reportedly told Football Insider that Son will stay put.

They have claimed that he has already told newly-appointed Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo that he is looking forward to working under his management next term.

Son is contracted with Spurs until 2023, but it remains to be seen as to whether his long-term future remains with the London-based club moving forwards.

But for the time being, this will come as a huge relief to the Lilywhites hierarchy and fans.

The verdict: Huge boost for Spurs

This is a huge boost for Tottenham Hotspur, and the club’s supporters will be delighted if this recent update from Football Insider is true.

Son has become even more crucial recently, having netted Jose Mourinho called him ‘incredible’ and an ‘animal’.

With Harry Kane’s future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium looking bleak, it will be vital for Nuno to build his new squad around a player of Son’s quality heading into the 2021/22 campaign.

Make no mistake about it, the South Korea star’s desire to stay is a huge boost for everyone at the club in what could have been an incredibly difficult rebuild if he and Kane were both to leave.

Nós erramos no jogo.
– O time é bom e sabíamos que o resultado viria. A está gente no caminho certo. Agora teremos um jogo de seis pontos em casa, contra o Novorizontino e precisamos manter a pegada – disse o veterano Carleto.

For once Kiwis favourites in Sharjah Cup

When Pakistan or India or both are playing cricket here either of the two is billed favourite even before a ball has been bowled. But not this time.Basking in the glory of last week’s win in the third Test against England and of edging out Australia from the finals of the tri-nation one day contest in January, New Zealand are regarded here “the team to watch” than the two Asian giants, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.Notwithstanding that two of their one-day specialists, Chris Cairns and Daniel Vettori are not in the Sharjah Cup squad, the Kiwis still look the most improved of the three sides contesting for the title and the $120,000 prize money. The New Zealand playing here and which will move over to Pakistan on April 18 for a three Test and one-day series, has undergone six changes from the team which drew the Test series 1-1 against England.Vettori is being rested following a back injury, Chris Drum has retired while Brendon McCullum, who did not perform well against England has been dropped. Also not included are the injured trio of Lou Vincent, Shane Bond and Dion Nash. From Pakistan’s point of view the man to watch is Nathan Astle. He is in great form. He has a commendable record against Pakistan already and with a one-day century and the fastest ever Test double hundred, both against England only two weeks ago, Waqar Younis and his bowlers may be well advised to draw an effective strategy against Astle.Kiwi skipper Stephen Fleming, who himself has been going through a lean period this summer, appeared quite confident during the net practice here on Sunday. “We must make the best use of his (Astle’s) tremendous form.”Fleming was apparently being modest when replying to a question he said, “we have to make best use of the available talent”. But Fleming has a point. His key all-rounder and the man who has been responsible for a number of New Zealand wins in the past, Cairns, is not here. And Fleming is obviously missing him. “Injuries are part of the game. We cannot do anything about it,” he added.New Zealand play their first match, the second of the tournament against Sri Lanka Tuesday.

Ormond defies pain to bowl Leicestershire to victory

Fast bowler James Ormond led Leicestershire to their second win in two days in the Benson & Hedges Cup with a brilliant four-wicket spell against Yorkshire at Grace Road

Neville Foulger03-May-2001Fast bowler James Ormond led Leicestershire to their second win in two days in the Benson & Hedges Cup with a brilliant four-wicket spell against Yorkshire at Grace Road.Returning to the field after treatment on a hamstring injury, Ormond battled through the pain barrier to claim four wickets for 19 runs in 38 balls and wreck Yorkshire’s victory march. The Tykes lost eight wickets for 47 runs in 13 overs to crash from 163 for two in the 36th over to 210 all out, giving Leicestershire victory by 14 runs.It was a superb fight-back by the home side and a brave performance from the injured Ormond, although it has now put him out of action for the game against Durham on Saturday. But Yorkshire will be kicking themselves for squandering such a match-winning opportunity and now face an uphill task to qualify for the quarter-finals.After winning the toss they put the home side into bat and restricted them to 224 for eight. Leicestershire would have hoped for better when they were 137 for one thanks to a stand of 119 between Vince Wells and Ben Smith.Wells top-scored with 76 off 95 balls and Smith made 50 off 94 balls. But their dismissals triggered a collapse, five wickets falling for 38 runs in ten overs. Then Darren Stevens and Neil Burns put on 42 in seven overs to give Leicestershire a defendable total. Yorkshire’s England man Michael Vaughan proved his worth as an off spinner by taking four for 46 off nine overs – a competition best. But it was his batting which looked set to give Yorkshire victory. He struck a brilliant 92 off 88 balls with 15 fours, before being sensationally caught by Daniel Marsh. It was a career-best score in limited overs competition for Vaughan. But it was not enough to give Yorkshire victory. Ormond dismissed Darren Lehmann, Michael Lumb, Anthony McGrath and Gary Fellows to turn the game on its head and earn the Gold Award.
