Journalist expects Adama Traore to stay at Wolves - Exclusive

Journalist Luke Hatfield has told Football FanCast that Adama Traore’s early-season performance mean that he’s likely to stay at Wolves, amid a report from Football Insider on Tuesday claiming a Tottenham source had told them that Jorge Mendes was negotiating a switch for the Spaniard.

Furthermore, according to The Guardian, Spurs were in talks with the Midlands outfit about bringing the Spaniard to north London on loan for the season.

However, Wolves rejected their approach and are desperate to keep the winger, who’s made a flying start to the season.

Despite missing glorious chances against both Leicester and Tottenham, Traore has been a real threat to opposition defenders in the opening few weeks, although Wolves are yet to score or pick up a point from their three Premier League fixtures.

Traore, who was once again a constant threat against Manchester United on Sunday, now has less than two years left on his current deal but hasn’t been able to agree terms over a new contract.

But with the window closing in less than 24 hours, Hatfield told Football FanCast that he doesn’t expect him to go anywhere:

“I think Lage has looked at his performances and seen that he has been one of the better players for Wolves, and thought we just can’t let a player of his quality leave at this time of the window because it’s just so hard to replace them.”

Victoria lead both the Sheffield Shield and FR Cup competitions after half-centuries to David Hussey and Andrew McDonald set up a four-wicket victory over Western Australia. The hosts were in trouble at 4 for 52 in their reply to the Warriors’ 198, but Hussey and McDonald combined in a 128-run partnership to help seal the success in the 46th over.Western Australia struggled in their innings and were deflated in the first over by the loss of Luke Ronchi to Dirk Nannes’ third ball of the game and a horrible injury to David Bandy three deliveries later. Bandy retired hurt and went to hospital for treatment for a fractured eye socket and a broken nose after the Nannes short ball missed his helmet and grille.Nannes returned to pick up Shaun Marsh for 21 before Adam Voges, the stand-in captain, guided the Warriors with an important 78. However, when he left caught-and-bowled to McDonald the rest of his team-mates struggled to lift the pace. McDonald picked up 3 for 41 while Harwood finished the innings with back-to-back wickets, capturing 3 for 32.Victoria were 0 for 36 before Brett Dorey removed Chris Rogers (14) and followed up next ball by bowling Brad Hodge. Rob Quiney and Cameron White also departed quickly, and Dorey went on to take 5 for 48, but he could not stop Hussey (66) or McDonald (67).

West Indies call off Abu Dhabi Tests

The proposed Test series between West Indies and Pakistan, planned originally for Abu Dhabi in November, will not be going ahead, after West Indies cited problems in their schedule

The proposed Test series between West Indies and Pakistan, planned originally for Abu Dhabi in November, will not be going ahead, after West Indies cited problems in their schedule. The decision leaves Pakistan with no Test cricket this year, despite repeated efforts by the board in the recent months to slot them in.”The West Indies board have informed us that they cannot go ahead with the series,” Salim Altaf, the Pakistan Cricket Board’s director-general, told Cricinfo.Had it gone ahead, the two-Test series would have taken place after the three ODIs between the two countries at the same venue in mid-November. The short amount of time left between now and then, however, turned out to be a hurdle.”Their board said there wasn’t enough time for them to negotiate touring terms for players with the WIPA (West Indies Player Association),” Altaf said. “They also have to go to New Zealand soon after, so the schedule would have been a bit hectic for them.”Dr Donald Peters, the WICB CEO, while making the announcement said the possibility of playing two Test matches against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi was explored by both boards but such an arrangement could not be put in place.”There was a proposal to play two Tests matches against Pakistan, also in Abu Dhabi, but logistically this proved too difficult for us, so we had to decline that request,” he said. “The team will have a camp in New Zealand as part of the build-up for what will be a very important tour. This will allow them to get fully acclimatized to the conditions.”Even if West Indies had agreed to the Tests, the financial benefits for a cash-strapped Pakistan board would have been questionable. The postponement of the Australia home series and the Champions Trophy due to security concerns has hurt Pakistan badly. Organising the series with West Indies, a board official revealed to Cricinfo, would have cost roughly US$2 million.Whether that would have been recovered, let alone a profit made, is doubtful. Few TV broadcasters were interested in a series on neutral territory with little spectator interest. One local sports channel, said the official, offered “the grand sum of US$40,000 to broadcast the series.” Though playing Tests might have helped the team, “commercially it just wasn’t very viable for us,” the official said. Local reports also suggested that the amount the West Indies board had asked for as payment for what would be, in effect, a home series for Pakistan, wasn’t something the PCB could afford. However, Altaf revealed that the boards had agreed to talk again in Dubai in December to try and fit the tour in to the Future Tours Programme. “That is a positive thing. We will meet again and hopefully we can organise this series at a more suitable date.”While West Indies will play two Tests, two Twenty20 Internationals and five ODIs from December 5 to January 13, Pakistan’s next scheduled Test assignment is the home series against India starting in January.

Gough ready to call it a day

Darren Gough, the former England fast bowler, has cast doubt over his availability for Yorkshire’s final match of the county season, against Sussex next week. Gough, 38, had already announced this would be his final season and he has hinted that he may have played the last match of his career.Gough bowled five magnificent overs in the morning session of the final day of Yorkshire’s match against title-chasing Somerset at Scarborough to give his side hope of an improbable win, but the match was eventually drawn. “I wanted to go out in style today – and that proved to me I am ready to retire. I am absolutely shattered now,” said Gough, who captained Yorkshire for the past two seasons. “I bowled as quick as I have for a long, long time in that first spell. I had the opposition saying that is the quickest they have faced all season and when they say stuff like that, I’d like to finish on that note.”When I look back I’m glad my last wicket was Justin Langer. I’ve had some great battles against him and it’s nice to know my last wicket in Yorkshire was someone as good as him.”Gough, who has suffered a series of niggling injuries this summer, now has a couple days to decide whether he will be fit to play the crucial relegation match at Hove. “I have given everything there, three spells of putting my body to the limit,” he said. “I will see how I rock up on Monday morning and how the other bowlers are.”Yorkshire are in serious danger of being relegated to Division Two with only five points separating them from Lancashire, Kent and Sussex.Gough also criticised the nature of the pitch at Scarborough, something he has done more than once when captaining at home. “I’ve been saying it for two years. Hopefully it will finally kick in at some stage. People are starting to agree with me now. You have got to give the bowlers a chance, especially with the bowling line-up Yorkshire have got.”They need a bit of encouragement because if you turn up time after time and are bowling on wickets like that, you are soon going to get disheartened.”

Butt's knock in vain as Sri Lanka win three on the trot

After losing their first couple of games, Hong Kong put on an improved effort at the Burgher Recreation Club in Colombo

Cricinfo staff15-Sep-2008
ScorecardAfter losing their first couple of games, Hong Kong put on an improved effort at the Burgher Recreation Club in Colombo but it wasn’t enough as Sri Lanka Cricket Development XI won by 47 runs in a match shortened to 43 overs a side. Chasing 255, Hussain Butt kept Hong Kong in the hunt with an aggressive 63, before Sameera Vishwaranga and Sachithra Serasinghe shared five wickets between them to quell the visitor’s chances of pulling off a surprise win.Sri Lanka, after opting to bat, got off to an aggressive start thanks to Shehan Aravinda, who scored 60 off 54 balls with three sixes. The middle order made starts but failed to convert them, and Sri Lanka had lost half their side by the 31st over. The lower order forced the pace towards the end as the hosts ended on 254 for 8. Irfan Ahmed, the right-arm seamer, was the most successful bowler with 3 for 50, while Nadeem Ahmed, the left-arm spinner, was the most economical with 1 for 30 off nine overs.Hong Kong lost their openers early, before Zain Abbas and Butt added 37 for the third wicket to stabilise the innings. The most productive stand – 87 for the fourth wicket – threatened to take the game away from the home side as Butt found good support from Ilyas Gull, who made 36. Butt smashed four sixes in his 64-ball knock and carried the stand. Gull fell in the 35th over, with Hong Kong needing a further 98 off nine overs, and wickets tumbled as the asking-rate climbed. Vishwaranga chipped away with three wickets while Serasinghe , the captain, took two wickets in as many overs. The best Hong Kong could do was to hang on till the final over without being bowled out.

Newcastle transfer claim on Phillips

Newcastle United will lose out on signing Nat Phillips, claims former Premier League striker Noel Whelan.

The Lowdown: Phillips eyed

According to The Athletic, the St. James’ Park faithful, in addition to West Ham United, Brighton and Hove Albion, Burnley and Bayer Leverkusen, are all eyeing up a potential move for Phillips in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool currently value the central defender at £15m, and it is not yet clear whether the North East club would be willing to pay that kind of money.

The Latest: Whelan prediction

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan, who played for the likes of Leeds United and Coventry City, has predicted that Phillips will sign for the Hammers, and so the Tyneside club would be set to lose out on his signature:

“I think Phillips would choose West Ham over the others, definitely.

“David Moyes has assembled a really strong side there.

“There is a focus on British based players, you can see what he is thinking. He has got rid of the players who did not give their all for the club. They have got a lot more honesty in that squad now and it shows because they have been much harder to beat over the past 12 to 18 months.

“They have great harmony in that dressing room and it comes from a great core group. Why wouldn’t you be interested in a move to West Ham if you’re Phillips?

“I think he’d be another great addition to West Ham’s squad as well.”

The Verdict: Would be a shame

It would certainly be a shame if Steve Bruce’s team were to miss out on the signing of Phillips, especially if he ends up joining a rival of theirs in the Premier League.

Described as a ‘monster’ by Jurgen Klopp after a match against RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League back in March, he is certainly capable of playing at the highest level, and his six-foot-two frame means that he could be a key threat for the Magpies in both boxes.

Phillips won no fewer than 7.5 0f his duels per match in the top flight in the 2020/21 season, in addition to averaging 4.8 clearances, 1.3 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per game (Sofascore), covering the injuries suffered by Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez well.

The Toon would be getting a very good player on their hands if they were to win the race for his signature.

Sunderland interested in George Edmundson

Sunderland are interested in a deal to bring George Edmundson to the Stadium of Light this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Glasgow Evening Times, who claim that Sunderland have joined the race for the Glasgow Rangers centre-back, with Charlton Athletic, Portsmouth and Ipswich Town also believed to be keeping a close eye on the defender ahead of a potential move in the summer transfer window.

However, the report goes on to state that, out of the interested parties, only Ipswich are keen on a permanent deal for the 23-year-old, with Steven Gerrard thought to much prefer the idea of selling Edmundson, rather than sending the centre-back on another loan deal ahead of next season.

Imagine him & O’Nien

While Edmundson may not have quite made the grade at Rangers, should Sunderland manage to get a deal over the line for the defender this summer, it would undoubtedly be quite a big coup for the club.

Indeed, while a hernia injury limited the number of appearances the 23-year-old made while on loan at Derby County last season, he nevertheless impressed over his 10 Championship fixtures, helping his side keep one clean sheet, as well as making an average of 0.5 interceptions, 1.4 tackles, 3.5 clearances and winning 6.1 duels per game.

These returns saw the £450k-rated man earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.78, ranking him as Wayne Rooney’s 12th-best player in the second tier of English football.

As such, it would appear to be a fair statement to make that the £4k-per-week centre-back’s level of performance would only improve if he were to drop down a division, with it very much seeming as if, should Kyril Louis-Dreyfus go on to secure the defender’s services this summer, Edmundson could play a huge role in Sunderland’s push for promotion next season.

Indeed, the thought of the man Gerrard dubbed a “faultless” player partnering up with Luke O’Nien – who thrived in the position last season, despite naturally being a midfielder – in the heart of the Black Cats’ defence should be a mouthwatering prospect for fans of the club and Lee Johnson alike.

And, with centre-back having been something of a problem position for the 40-year-old Mackems boss last time out, the signing of Edmundson could well be the solution, leading us to believe Louis-Dreyfus should do all he can to get a deal over the line for the Rangers man in the coming weeks.

Joga quarta?

Collingwood thrilled by maiden hundred

Man-of-the-Match Paul Collingwood is hoping to have clinched his place in England’s World Cup squad after his maiden one-day international century carried England to their second successive win over Sri Lanka.

CricInfo20-Dec-2002Man-of-the-Match Paul Collingwood is hoping to have clinched his place in England’s World Cup squad after his maiden one-day international century carried England to their second successive win over Sri Lanka. The Durham all-rounder rescued England from the perilous position of 122 for six to ensure a total of 258, which proved more than enough for victory.”It’s been a good day,” Collingwood said afterwards. “I came in at a difficult situation and managed to get ones and twos and (Craig) White played a great innings as well.”We just knew we had to bat the overs out and we were trying to get out to 46to 47 overs and then a slog, but we were pleased because we managed to getthree, four, five an over throughout that period,” he told Sky Sports.Asked whether he believed his World Cup place for February and March is secure, Collingwood replied: “Let’s hope so. Obviously I got dropped for the first two games and that was disappointing, but I went in the nets and thankfully it’s gone well since then.”Meanwhile Nasser Hussain described Collingwood’s performance as “exceptional”, and believes England can take heart from another win ahead of the fourth Test, which starts in Melbourne on Boxing Day.”We were a little bit clumsy early on,” said the England captain. “We should have got used to the bounce quicker than we did especially since we’d already played a Test here. But we played our way of trouble, and I think that we should give them credit for that.””It was an exceptional performance (by Collingwood). He has looked very good since he got into the team and was very good today in very difficult circumstances. Luckily our last recognised batsman Craig White was able to stay with him.”Hussain, who had some sharp words for his side after two dropped catches during the Sri Lankan innings, also drew encouragement from further impressive bowling displays from youngsters James Anderson and Steve Harmison.”They’ve got things that you need at this level. For example Anderson’s slower ball gives us something that we haven’t had before, as well as Harmison’s pace and bounce.”But I wouldn’t get too excited. After taking such a drubbing in the tour every game against Sri Lanka has become like a semi-final, and I just think I needed to let them know that we need to play well all the time and take our chances. It’s nicer to go into the Christmas period with two wins under our belts.”Sri Lanka’s captain skipper Sanath Jayasuriya pointed to dropped catches as the key reason for his team’s defeat.”I think we bowled well but the fielding was not up to the standard. We dropped so many catches and you can’t afford to do that. We dropped their important batters and paid the price.”I think 260 was still gettable but we lost a wicket early on again. When wewere here before in 1998 we won a few matches but we need to be more positive.”

Gregg Evans drops AVFC transfer update

The Athletic’s Gregg Evans has dropped a major Aston Villa transfer update that will surely have fans buzzing.

What’s the story?

Dean Smith’s side have already enjoyed a fruitful start to the summer transfer window, with the signings of both Emi Buendia and Ashley Young being completed early on.

Evans has now revealed that the club are continuing to focus on signing a new playmaker in that attacking midfield role, with Arsenal starlet Emile Smith Rowe remaining their number one target for that position.

He told The Athletic: “Aston Villa’s transfer priority remains a No 10, so, for the first summer in seven years, they are not pushing hard to sign a new striker.

“The collective feeling at Villa is that should another attacking midfielder arrive — and Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe is their top target in that department — there will be no immediate need to bolster the forward line further.

“Emi Buendia is already on board, so Villa have strengthened their attacking options this summer even if nothing else happens. They see their ideal starting forward four consisting of Watkins, Buendia, Jack Grealish and another new signing, with Smith Rowe being the pick of the bunch when it comes to desired further additions.

“Of course, there’s considerable work to be done to winkle the 20-year-old out of Arsenal, who are in the process of offering him a new contract and have no appetite to accept any future bid after rejecting Villa’s second offer of around £30m.”

Exciting times for Villa

Make no mistake about it, the thought of Ollie Watkins, Jack Grealish, Buendia and Smith Rowe all playing in tandem up front is a mouth-watering one for Villa fans.

That quartet has pace and creativity flowing through it in abundance and will surely add a lot more attacking threat than Villa carried last season – Smith’s side scored 55 goals in the Premier League, which ranked them tenth in the division.

With the back five essentially sorted with Emi Martinez in goal, and the likes of Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings and Matt Targett in front of him, it’s adding a bit of flair and skill at the top end of the pitch which could greatly determine where Villa will finish next season.

After coming into the Arsenal side post-Christmas, Smith Rowe chipped in with two goals and four assists in just 20 Premier League games, including scoring the winner against Chelsea towards the end of the season.

It’s exactly why Evans’ update that signing a new number ten is Villa’s main priority this summer must have fans absolutely buzzing.

Meanwhile, Villa are closing in on this big-money signing…
