Liverpool fans bemoan Tsimikas injury

A number of Liverpool fans have been bemoaning an injury update on Kostas Tsimikas, with the left-back picking up a knock on international duty.

The Reds snapped up the 24-year-old last August, bringing him in from Olympiakos in a deal worth £11.75million.

Tsimikas was seen as ideal backup to Andy Robertson, allowing the Scot the odd breather in what was going to be a relentless season.

Unfortunately, the Greek’s first year on Merseyside has been a hugely disappointing one, with injuries constantly halting his progress.

[freshpress-quiz id=“343638″]

Tsimikas has been limited to just six appearances in all competition, with only five minutes of action coming his way in the Premier League.

It now appears as though the Liverpool man has suffered another setback, with Sportime journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos taking to Twitter to confirm that he took no part in training for Greece on Friday.

It is believed that he picked up a knock in his country’s 1-1 draw with Spain on Thursday, having been substituted late on.

West Ham eye Man City’s Yangel Herrera

David Moyes could land West Ham United a tactically intelligent talent by pursuing Manchester City midfielder Yangel Herrera this summer.

What’s the word?

According to Goal, the Hammers are monitoring Herrera ahead of his expected return to the Etihad Stadium from a two-year loan spell with Granada.

The 23-year-old has been in outstanding form after establishing himself as a key player at the La Liga outfit this term, and could be welcomed into Pep Guardiola’s plans next season.

Manchester City are yet to offer veteran midfield anchor Fernandinho a new deal ahead of his contract expiring in June, and they are expected to be in the market for a new centre-forward to replace Sergio Aguero.

However, the Citizens may have to look to their young players to plug some gaps after posting losses of £126m for the 2019/20 campaign, which could see Herrera finally be given a shot after loan deals with New York City, SD Huesca and Granada since his arrival in 2017.

Premier League and La Liga suitors have not been discouraged, though, as West Ham and Southampton are keeping tabs of his situation with a view to a potential summer swoop.

It is not claimed whether the Irons or Saints would look to sign Herrera on loan or in a permanent transfer, with the 23-cap Venezuela international under contract at the Etihad Stadium through to the summer of 2024.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/the-latest-west-ham-news-and-views-2″ title=”The latest West Ham news and views!”]

Reports by the Manchester Evening News noted that the Sky Blues are aware of the interest in Herrera from England and Spain, and are weighing up his future having decided that he would have no issues adapting to the Premier League.

Should West Ham sign Man City’s Herrera?

If Manchester City opt against offering 35-year-old Fernandinho a new contract after deciding to let Aguero (32) leave at the end of the season, West Ham’s interest in Herrera could swiftly become a moot point.

However, if a squad place does not become available for Herrera at the Etihad Stadium over the next few months, Moyes should explore what it would take to sign the Monagas SC product.

Arsenal icon Patrick Vieira was a huge advocate of Herrera during the midfielder’s spell with New York City, where he started 32 of his 38 appearances across all competitions.

“He’s a tactically intelligent midfielder who is strong in the tackle and reads the game well,” the former NYCFC boss said in 2017. “Yangel also has good passing range and spatial awareness, which is crucial for a player in his position.”

David Villa also claimed that “Herrera is one of the best players in MLS” during his time at Yankee Stadium and suggested that “Yangel is going to be a world-class player in the next few years.”

Herrera may not be world-class yet, but he is a key part of Diego Martínez’s Granada side with 20 starts over 26 appearances in La Liga this season, showing the versatility to play across the spine of the Nazaries’ midfield.

His performances in Spain’s top flight this term have also returned a comparable volume of tackles per 90 minutes (2.15) seen from Declan Rice (2.45) and Tomas Soucek (2.17) in the Premier League, per FBref.

Unlike Rice (0.93) and Soucek (0.97), Herrera makes 1.15 of his tackles in the middle third and 0.24 in the attacking zone (Rice 0.03, Soucek 0.23). He also applies pressure more often (21.1% to 15.1%) and makes more blocks (2.49 to 1.72 and 1.4).

If the chance is there for West Ham to sign Herrera, then Moyes should urge the London Stadium natives to pursue the option.

Man City fans want Locatelli

According to a report by Fabrizio Romano, via City Xtra, the Sky Blues are looking at Sassuolo midfielder Manuel Locatelli and are currently scouting him – prompting many Manchester City supporters to flock to this claim.

Locatelli, who is valued at around €40M-€45M (£34.4m-£38.7m) by the Serie A side, is indeed at the centre of interest from Txiki Begiristain according to Romano – with the Sky Blues apparently keeping tabs ahead of this summer.

This is despite the arguably fine form of Rodrigo in defensive midfield, but with Fernandinho looking unlikely to sign another contract extension, Locatelli has emerged as a potential replacement option and reinforcement in front of City’s defence.

However, while they are currently looking, Romano has followed that up by saying there has not been any contact with Locatelli’s representatives or indeed a formal approach.

Flocking to this claim, interest in the 23-year-old alone has been enough to spark some excitement and debate – find all of their best verdicts down below.

Villa must drop Barkley vs Leeds

After falling to a dismal 2-1 defeat to Leicester last week in the Premier League, Aston Villa return to top-flight action when they take on Leeds United on Saturday afternoon at Elland Road.

Dean Smith’s side have enjoyed an incredible second campaign back in the Premier League, staying well in the hunt for a shock European place next season.

And while things have been rosy for a number of months now, a couple of chinks in the Villa armour have started to emerge. Injuries to both Jack Grealish and Matty Cash have robbed the side of two key players in the starting eleven, while Smith must make a big call on the woefully out-of-form Ross Barkley.

The Chelsea loanee has had a rough time as of late, struggling to recapture his early season form following his comeback from a hamstring injury. In seven out of the last eight Premier League games, he’s been taken off before the full-time whistle, and Smith must finally say enough is enough, and take him out of the line-up when they visit Leeds.

Speaking after he was hauled off yet again in the second-half against Leicester, Sky Sports pundit Alex Scott slammed the midfielder for his display, saying: “For me it’s another missed opportunity for Ross Barkley to show up and demand, he’s been subbed off again and you can see in his face he’s not happy. But how many chances does a player need?

“You need to take it upon yourself. There’s only so many chances that he can be deserving. He’s missed another opportunity today.”

The Villa boss however was quick to dismiss any suggestion that Barkley’s move at Villa had gone sour, insisting: “It’s a long way off the mark to say things aren’t working out for him. His numbers have been really good in terms of his output on the pitch and we have to remember he’s been out for six or seven weeks with a hamstring injury and then had to play games to recapture that fitness because we haven’t been able to train.

“But he’s certainly getting back to where we want him to. I just needed to change the game at that time.”

While it’s rather unsurprising Smith leapt to his player’s defence, it is a slightly baffling take to claim that Barkley is getting back to his best. The England international has scored just one Premier League goal since mid-October when he netted the winner against Leicester, and for a player playing in his position of just behind the striker, that simply isn’t enough.

His lack of goals may not be that much of an issue if he were setting his teammates up instead, but his assists total have badly dried up too – he hasn’t done so since a 3-0 victory over Arsenal in early November.

The Athletic’s Gregg Evans suggested on the 1874 podcast that Barkley appears to be “playing with a bit of fear”, and admitted that the attacking midfielder “needs to be dropped” following his latest lacklustre display against the Foxes.

Valued at £17.5m by CIES, Barkley simply needs to be taken out of the firing line when Villa make the trip to Leeds on late Saturday afternoon.

Celtic: Scott Brown influential again

Scott Brown hasn’t had an easy ride of it this season. The Celtic midfielder has often been the scapegoat, the man targeted when things aren’t going according to plan.

Indeed, at times, he has deserved that criticism. His performance against Slavia Prague in the Europa League a number of months ago showed signs that his career may have been heading on a downward spiral.

He was poor in possession of the ball, struggled to keep up with the pace of the game and was lackadaisical when attempting to clear the ball for Slavia’s opening strike in Prague.

What typified Brown’s season was the red card he received against Livingston in January. The skipper had been on the pitch for just five minutes before he was handed his marching orders.

On that evidence, there didn’t look as though there’d be any way back for the skipper. However, he has shown signs, in recent matches, of getting back to his best.

In the 4-0 win over St Mirren, he was superb. Brown controlled the tempo of the game and scored a lovely header to open the scoring from a corner. On top of that, he played a delightful ball over the top to assist Albian Ajeti’s strike.

As club captain, his leadership skills have been tested to the max this season. More often than not, with the Bhoys floundering, it has not been up to scratch.

Though, after John Kennedy challenged him to stand up and be counted before the clash against Aberdeen, he repaid the interim manager with a classy display on Saturday.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-on-celtics-managerial-vacancy” title=”Check out the latest on Celtic’s managerial vacancy!”]

Speaking before the encounter, Kennedy said: “He’s a strong character and will do the right thing but everybody must take responsibility and share that burden.

“If they do, it lightens the load and everyone is moving in the same direction. Scott will still be influential for the next few months in terms of how he leads by example.”

Indeed, the 35-year-old proved what a real leader of men he is this weekend. Brown took influence from Kennedy’s words and was as assured as he has been all season. It was Odsonne Edouard who scored the goal, but without their captain, Aberdeen might have found things easier.

Brown ran proceedings and in the process of touching the ball 105 times, he dominated the midfield. Only Callum McGregor (106) took on possession on more occasions, but no player completed more than his 84 passes as he finished with a success rate of 90%.

The veteran screened the midfield with relative ease, winning four ground duels. That tally was only bettered by left-back Diego Laxalt.

On a day where Brown had been challenged to step up by his new manager, he heeded Kennedy’s words and rolled back the years with an influential and combative performance.

More of this would be good before the midfielder’s contract expires in the summer.

Aston Villa: Fans buzz at tweet about Matty Cash %%sep%% %%sitename%%

Many Aston Villa fans have been buzzing at a tweet involving Matty Cash which recently emerged on social media.

The Aston Villa Twitter account relayed a tweet about Cash and posted a stat on the English right-back. The tweet said that the former Nottingham Forest star has made more interceptions in the Premier League this season than any other defender in the division.

Villa had signed the Englishman from Forest in the summer transfer window for a fee of £14.18 million. In the current campaign, he has made 14 Premier League appearances for Dean Smith’s men and has also racked up a couple of assists for the Birmingham-based club (as per Transfermarkt).

The 23-year-old has racked up a rating of 7.19 in the Premier League this season and in the Villa side, he has been the club’s seventh-best performer in that sense. In the Villa side, he has been the club’s best tackler too as he had made 2.6 tackles per game. He has made the fourth-highest number of clearances per game (as per Whoscored).

This shows the sort of signing he has been for Aston Villa. Tony Adams has already been full of praise for the Englishman and said: “Look at Villa, the right-back Matty Cash the other night. Wow. Slough boy. Dagenham and Redbridge. He’s gone to Nottingham Forest. What a player. He’s 23.

“He has Aubameyang in his pocket. Athletic, strong, what a great player.”

The tweet involving Cash from Villa’s Twitter account caught the attention of many fans, who made their opinion clear about the summer signing.

Why Klopp should axe Ben Woodburn

Ben Woodburn returned to Liverpool earlier this week after a disappointing loan spell in League One and now might be the right time for the Reds to cash in on the 21-year-old.

The youngster has excelled in Liverpool’s U23 in the past, contributing 13 goals and 11 assists in just 36 appearances but after another failed loan spell away, it seems clear that he isn’t going to make it at the Merseyside club.

Woodburn has been spent time on loan with Sheffield United, Oxford United and Blackpool in recent seasons but has just one goal in a combined 35 appearances away from Liverpool.

Much was expected of the Welshman when he became Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer in 2016, scoring in a 2-0 League Cup win against Leeds United, breaking Michael Owen’s record in the process.

The Liverpool man’s reputation grew further after he scored an excellent goal on his international debut for Wales when he was just a teenager, with several media outlets prematurely dubbing him ‘the next Gareth Bale’.

He has made 11 appearances for the Reds’ first-team in his career, but the last came in the 2016/17 season and considering his disappointing form in the Championship and League One since then, it seems unlikely that he will be making any more appearances for Liverpool anytime soon.

After his goal against Leeds, Jurgen Klopp warned that Woodburn would be talked up too much by the media and that certainly seems to be the case, as unfortunately, it looks as if he has been massively overhyped by both the media and fans.

Back in 2019, when Rangers were linked with signing the Welsh international, Steven Gerrard had this to say:

“He does need to play football matches and if at the right time he’s available we’ll use him and we’ll enjoy him, because he’s a fantastic footballer.”

However, after his latest loan disaster with Blackpool, this month could be the right time to cash in on Woodburn and end his 14-year association with the club, with the 21-year-old having joined Liverpool’s academy when he was just seven.

AND, in other news, Klopp can sign his next Coutinho at LFC in 26 y/o who scores and assists…
