Sunderland fans reject Stewart Donald’s latest update

Stewart Donald broke his silence on Wednesday in an interview on BBC Radio Newcastle, but some Sunderland fans are still to be convinced by his handling of matters recently. When the chairman first bought the club his communication was a breath of fresh air, but subsequent online criticism and abuse has driven him away from Twitter, and the limelight in general. However, with results taking a turn for the worst and the appointment of Phil Parkinson so far proving to be a disaster, Donald may have felt he needed to clear up a few points, while also discussing the recent investment by an American consortium.Watch Sunderland Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Despite his openness in explaining several situations about the club, such as the repairs of the stadium and the fact he doesn’t regret sacking Jack Ross, some fans still remain dissatisfied.

Many believe that he needs to start putting his words into action, with results on the pitch of particular concern to most, due to the fact Sunderland have won two of Parkinson’s first eight games.

Until performances improve and promotion looks more realistic, Donald looks likely to be criticised for the foreseeable future, as the following reactions indicate.

Dean Smith has praised Jack Grealish for more than just his talent

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers..

Dean Smith has spoken about Jack Grealish’s ability to play out wide, as well as in midfield, praising him for his attitude and versatility.

What did he say?

Grealish has been playing on the left-wing in each of his last five games for Villa, something that has allowed Conor Hourihane to get more time on the pitch.

[ad_pod ]

This has not impacted the club captain’s performances though, as he has notched up two goals and two assists during that period, with some of those playing an important role in wins against Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United.

Smith has outlined his reasoning behind moving him, as shown on Aston Villa’s official Twitter page: “He can play a number of positions. I just think with the balance of our team at the moment, playing in the wide left area helps us and suits him. There’ll be times when he goes back and plays as an eight as well.”

As quoted by FourFourTwo, the Villa manager has also added: “That’s the thing a mature Jack knows now, that he is doing a job for the team by being there.

“I feel he gives the opposition problems when he gets on the ball and runs at them, and as we saw against Newcastle, he won two free-kicks that led to two goals.”

More than just talent

This shows how important aspects outside of Grealish’s talent are for his Aston Villa contribution, as they look to continue moving forward in the Premier League.

There is a real feel-good factor at Villa Park this campaign, as highlighted by the way in which Smith’s face lit up when he spoke about another night under the lights at their home.

He also described the stadium as Grealish’s “happy place”, which shows just how much the 24-year-old enjoys playing there.

The fact that such a key player is loving being at the club so much, not displaying an egotistical outlook on the position he plays, can only be a positive for the manager and team.

Grealish’s talent is, obviously, an important part of his game, but it is the other aspects he is showing that make the homegrown star truly talismanic.

In other news, Grealish received praise from a fellow exciting English talent.

QPR: The XI that Mark Warburton should deploy against Leeds on Saturday

QPR travel to Elland Road on Saturday to take on Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds, who are currently sat 3rd in the Championship.

Just two points behind the promotion hopefuls however are Mark Warburton’s side, who could potentially break into the automatic promotion places with a win – providing other results go their way, of course.

The R’s could’ve made further inroads at the top of the table if they had been victorious in the west London derby on Monday, although Brentford reigned supreme by three goals to one.

In Leeds’ case, Bielsa oversaw a 0-0 draw against Sheffield Wednesday last time out, so both sides will presumably be looking to get back into winning form.

Let’s take a look at the XI Warburton should put out to give his side a good chance of doing just that…

Against the Bees on Monday night, Warburton opted to start with a back four consisting of 37-year-old Angel Rangel, with Bright Osayi-Samuel and Josh Scowen also part of the XI further forward – Jordan Hugill missed out through suspension.

Against Leeds, however, Warburton should drop all three of them and revert back to a five-man backline as he has done on five occasions so far this season.

Why? Well, we outlined that two Leeds players may cause QPR problems this weekend, with one of them being defensive-midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Warburton should look to make the 23-year-old’s life harder by putting both Eberechi Eze and Ilias Chair on him in the middle of the park, meaning that Phillips will have two problems to think about.

To offset that, a five-man backline with the impressive Ryan Manning at left wing-back , who we previously outlined fits the role like a glove, will provide the width along with Todd Kane at right wing-back.

Dominic Ball – whose work in the middle has previously helped Eze and Chair thrive – should also come back in for his first appearance since the defeat against Cardiff.

Hugill should also be drafted back into the side alongside Wells, as the Bermuda international seemed to struggle up top when on his own against Brentford – the on-loan striker had just 31 touches of the ball, the least of any player on the pitch including the goalkeepers.

Birmingham should consider changing formation in wake of Harlee Dean suspension

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Time for something a bit radical?

With the suspension of Harlee Dean being upheld, fans have been debating who should fill the skipper’s spot in his absence, all under the assumption that it will be a one in, one out change.

However, there’s one possibility that hasn’t been talked about, and that’s whether or not Pep Clotet might change formation.

Whilst the Blues have played predominantly with a 4-4-2 system this season, they did experiment with three at the back during pre-season early in the campaign.

Clotet has spoken about how he likes his team to be flexible, so it’s not like it’s something that they haven’t practiced before.

On the chalkboard

Changing from a 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2/5-3-2 (depending on where you list your wing-backs/wingers) is a relatively simple job. Take the line-up from the Cardiff game; Camp; Colin, Pedersen, Dean, Roberts; Crowley, Bellingham, Sunjic, Villalba; Mrabti, Jutkiewicz as the starting point, then go from there.

One of the central midfielders will have to drop out to make way for the extra central defender. Whoever the defenders might be doesn’t matter, Clotet will know who his third and fourth choice centre-backs are on the depth chart and where they’ll be slotted in.

That will mean that the wingers Crowley and Villalba will tuck inside to play alongside Ivan Sunjic, but seeing as Crowley spent most of his career centrally, he shouldn’t have a problem playing there again.

You swap out Villalba and keep Bellingham in the middle with Sunjic, and at the same the full-backs just turn into wing-backs.

So Birmingham absolutely have the capability to pull this off in their captain’s absence, it’s just whether or not Clotet is brave enough to try it out.

It sort of comes back to Paul Merson’s comments from the summer in regards to Harry Maguire moving to Manchester United and how he looked good playing for England, “When you play in a three at the back, you play at three in the back for one reason only, the defenders aren’t good enough”.

There’s certainly an argument to be made that they aren’t good enough this season, conceding 20 goals and only keeping four clean sheets during the whole campaign, so perhaps this is something to think about not just for this week, but going forward as well.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery makes "important" promise

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Unai Emery believes Arsenal can achieve “something important” this season, per inews.

What’s he said?

The Gunners have enjoyed a somewhat promising start to the season and have already played three of the so-called big six, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

They have lost just one of those games, to Jurgen Klopp’s men, while drawing with Spurs and the Red Devils, though they were defeated by Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Monday evening.

And Emery insists that his squad has the capacity to take significant strides forward this term, even reserving special praise for Mesut Ozil, who has struggled for minutes this term.

He said: “I am speaking every day with Raul (Sanllehi, their head of football), Edu (Arsenal’s technical director) and the players. And I really think our way is going right and working well.

“And really now I am very happy with the club. I am really happy with the players. The last two, three, four weeks, every player – and Mesut Ozil – has been working very well. In this way we can be positive and we can think we are going to do something important this year.

“This is the way I want and I was speaking with Raul, he has the same idea when he is speaking with me.”

Changes needed

If Emery is to get his way, significant changes are needed.

Ozil, namechecked by the Gunners boss, is not actually playing and has just one appearance to his name thus far in the top-flight. Granit Xhaka has been named captain, while Sead Kolasinac continues to keep Kieran Tierney out of the starting XI.

In the defeat to the Blades, Arsenal had just three shots on target.

That’s because they simply didn’t have enough creativity; their full-backs, Kolasinac and Calum Chambers, were both booked and could not have a significant impact in the latter third; Joe Willock, in attacking midfield, touched the ball a mere 17 times.

Of course, one swallow does not make a summer, in the same way that one bad result does not make a crisis, but the loss to the Blades is informative.

If Emery wants to take steps towards achieving what he wants, he needs to start playing his best players in a formation that allows them to actually create chances and score goals.

Otherwise, they’ll be doomed to another season of attempting to qualify for the Champions League.

Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish assures fans Jurgen Klopp is "going nowhere"

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Kenny Dalglish’s latest comments will be music to the ears of Liverpool fans, as the Reds legend said that Jurgen Klopp is “going nowhere”.

What’s he said?

Liverpool fans have suddenly been forced to picture a bleak world without their favourite German in the dugout over the last few weeks.

First his agent said Klopp and his wife do not enjoy the weather in England, then the manager himself spoke about Steven Gerrard eventually replacing him.

Dalglish has calmed the storm though, writing about Klopp’s comments in The Sunday Post: “It’s a hypothetical scenario, but one that I can see the sense in. I’m sure Jurgen is only echoing the thoughts of most of the club’s supporters.

“However, let’s be clear. Jurgen is going nowhere, and nobody with the club at heart wants to see him depart.

“He may have led the club to the Champions League last season, the biggest prize in European football. But there is much more he still wants to achieve – in particular Liverpool’s first league title since 1990 – and this season has started very well.”

Phew

We imagine Liverpool fans were picturing a post-apocalyptic world or perhaps the upside-down from Netflix show Stranger Things after even just the slightest hint that Klopp won’t be their manager forever.

In fact, we wouldn’t put it past the Anfield faithful to currently be looking into some sort of cryogenic freezing process to slow the former Borussia Dortmund boss’ ageing process and allow him to stay for several lifetimes.

And while that may be a bit of a stretch, Dalglish’s comments will certainly be music to the ears of Reds fans everywhere. The club legend attends practically every game and certainly has his ear to the ground.

Klopp has transformed the club from battling just to scrape Champions League qualification into genuine title challengers and of course kings of Europe, and it’s hard to imagine players like Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker would have joined the club under a lesser manager.

It’s fair to say fans were officially freaking out at the suggestion the gaffer won’t be around forever, but it appears he won’t be going anywhere until he gets a few more titles under his belt. Phew.

Sheffield Wednesday job is Garry Monks huge challenge, says David Prutton

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Sky Sports pundit David Prutton has discussed the huge challenge for Garry Monk now he’s at Sheffield Wednesday when talking to Football League World.

What’s he said?

The Owls finally appointed a successor to Steve Bruce last weekend by bringing in the 40-year-old and his first match in charge is no easy feat against local rivals Huddersfield in front of the TV cameras on Sunday afternoon.

Wednesday had been operating under caretaker boss Lee Bullen’s stewardship which has seen them reach 11th in the table, but after a good start to the season, the side hit a poor run of form – losing three of their last four matches.

That run of form has ultimately led to the decision to appoint a permanent man for the foreseeable future with Monk taking the reins.

Prutton, who finished his playing career at Hillsborough in 2014 was rather undecided on the appointment. Speaking to Football League World, he said:

“It is a concern having five jobs in five years.

“He’s still in a position where from the outside looking in, there’s still an element of wanting to prove himself.”

“This is his next huge challenge, and the sense that you get from what he’s been like, he’s a very determined individual. You never know who wanted what at Birmingham, but he’s going to Wednesday, and they’ll listen as to how he wants to approach it and what’s available to him.”

A fresh start for both

Monk’s recent managerial experience seems to be short-lived wherever he’s been and with that in mind,  there are reasons to be slightly concerned over his appointment, especially after how things ended at Birmingham.

Saying that this could be the perfect opportunity for him to finally settle down, something he hasn’t been afforded in the past. Like Prutton says, it could be a chance for him to prove himself despite a huge challenge.

Wednesday are a club that needs some stability too so it could be a perfect match for a club and manager looking to stamp their authority.

The Owls have gone through as many as 15 permanent managers in the last 20 years, which has to be a factor in them not featuring in the top-flight since 2000.

The 40-year-old’s experience has all come from within this league barring his managerial start at Swansea, and that only bodes well for the club as he should know the Championship inside out.

Not all of his departures have been through his own choice either, unlike Bruce.

Birmingham were slapped with a points deduction just as Monk had them competing in around the playoff picture – their 17th place finish was undoubtedly no mark on the effect he had at the club.

He left the west Midlands following a disagreement with the Blues’ ownership, but their loss can indeed be a gain for Wednesday.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa sleepwalking into mistakes with his youth players

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

For Leeds, Marcelo Bielsa seems somewhat of a chosen one. Failing to get promotion last term, he’s been given another chance after signing a new deal before the summer’s activity got underway.

Leeds fans love him and that was only emphasised in midweek after some rather baffling comments were made suggesting he should be replaced by Jose Mourinho.

Yet the Argentine doesn’t come without mistakes and some rather questionable approaches to management.

This is someone who has left jobs quickly whilst his Leeds team rather crumbled towards the back end of the 2018/19 campaign.

Bielsa is an interesting character but with the new season now in full swing, he must avoid sleepwalking into a big error.

Against Salford on Tuesday, he decided to play a number of his young players, handing opportunities to Leif Davis and Jamie Shackleton whilst also giving a first-team debut to Alfie McCalmont.

Yet, on the bench was Mateusz Bogusz, a player who despite scoring against Western Sydney Wanderers in pre-season has been absent from Bielsa’s selection in competitive action.

Before their Carabao Cup outing, the manager claimed that the Pole was near to the first team, hinting he could well be involved, saying: “Mateusz Bogusz will be inside the group.”

But despite being included in the matchday squad, he didn’t play a single minute.

Bielsa’s quotes, therefore, rather smell of false hope.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

It looked as though the teenager may get an opportunity to feature but instead was ignored after being hyped up.

It was rather bizarre that he didn’t get a chance, especially with the side 3-0 up. Although it was positive that McCalmont got a taste of senior football, they must be careful with someone like Bogusz, particularly with the talent he possesses.

It’s all well and good suggesting he’s close to the team but he must give him opportunities.

It was a confusing statement if you reflect on the fact he didn’t actually play and Bielsa must avoid doing something similar again if Bogusz is to flourish.
