Marcus Gayle tips Rangers new boy to play in the Premier League

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former Rangers player Marcus Gayle has tipped summer signing Joe Aribo to one day play in the Premier League, speaking to radio station talkSPORT.

What’s the story?

Aribo was unveiled this week as Steven Gerrard’s latest summer signing, arriving after the expiration of his contract at Charlton Athletic.

Much has been said about his decision to move to the Scottish Premiership, with former manager Lee Bowyer believing it’s the wrong move at this stage of his career.

Gayle though, who worked with the player at non-league side Staines Town in 2014, believes that the midfielder has all the attributes to one day make it to the Premier League and that Rangers is a massive opportunity.

The fans in the video below had some very strong words for Michel Platini who was detained over alleged corruption this week…

As quoted by talkSPORT, the former striker said:

“I can see within two or three years, he’ll play in the Premier League, no doubt. He’s got that left foot, he goes past people, he’s creative and he’s a box-to-box player.

“Joe is a rare asset at the moment. He’s got the opportunities to sharpen those skills and tools to further his dream of playing in the top-flight in England.

“Under Steven Gerrard, what he’ll learn is the mentality to win games, the intensity of training day in, day out, dedicating yourself even more than what he’s doing at the moment.

“This kid was playing in front of 150 fans or so and now he’s meeting Steven Gerrard, who’s welcoming him to the club. It’s a brilliant experience for him, he’ll kick on all the way.”

Is Rangers the right move?

Gayle’s endorsement of Aribo’s move is a fairer reflection of his opportunity than Bowyer’s was earlier this week.

The 22-year-old is likely to have plenty of first-team chances next season and playing alongside experienced Premier League pros such as Steven Davis and Scott Arfield, as well as working under one of the best midfielders to ever play in the division is surely going to improve his game quicker than a Championship struggle with Charlton.

Players such as Stuart Armstrong, Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Fraser and Victor Wanyama are all products of the Scottish Premiership that have gone on to excel in the English top-flight in recent years, so if Aribo shows good enough form then clubs will take notice.

In the process he gets to play for one of the biggest clubs in Britain in front of 50,000 people every second week.

Carl Jenkinson’s departure would mean the end of an era at Arsenal

[ad_pod ]

According to Sky Sports, Championship side West Brom are in talks with Arsenal over signing out-of-favour right-back Carl Jenkinson this summer.

What’s the word?

The 27-year-old has struggled to get regular first-team football at the Emirates ever since his move from Charlton and it appears he may finally get a permanent move away.

The boyhood Arsenal fan has made no secret of his desire to try and make things work in north London but with interest from Scottish champions Celtic as well as from the Hawthorns, Jenkinson could well have played his final game for the club.

The end of Arsene Wenger’s British core

Aaron Ramsey. Jack Wilshere. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Kieran Gibbs. Carl Jenkinson. When Arsene Wenger proudly announced his ‘British core’ back in 2012, who really could have predicted Jenkinson would be the man to stand tall at the end of it? The stuff of legends.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals he would have snubbed Tottenham for Arsenal if they’d come knocking in 2005…

During Wenger’s reign in charge, the Gunners gradually lost the homegrown identity that had been a staple of their success during the 20th century and became the first team to consistently have a line-up without a single English player. So when the Frenchman assembled that core of players there was a real excitement and a feeling that they would know perhaps more than others what it meant to play for the club.

Instead, the group were a big reason for the Gunners’ decline in the 2010s and really became a symbol of mediocrity. Of those players mentioned, none have really gone on to achieve a career close to superstardom – Ramsey maybe the closest of them all.

Jenkinson played just eight first-team games last season under Unai Emery and became a bit of a parody for Gunners fans. Just how was he still at the club? How had he managed to outlast the others? So if and when Jenkinson does make his permanent departure from Arsenal official this summer, it really will spell the end of an era at the Emirates.

Overrated: Leeds fans turn on Jack Clarke as Tottenham move looms

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter have been turning on Jack Clarke after being asked their unpopular opinions about the club.

This comes just days after it was rumoured that the young winger could be on his way to Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Clarke has had a breakthrough campaign at Elland Road this season, appearing in 24 games for the Whites. During that time he has scored twice and assisted twice whilst showing enough potential to attract the interest of the Champions League finalists.

£10 million is the reported fee that Spurs are hoping to bag the 18-year-old for, and that may prove to be enough to secure his services.

It didn’t take long for fans of the Yorkshire club to do a complete U-turn on the teenager following some high praise for him on Twitter earlier in the campaign, and on more than one occasion.

Many have taken to social media to brand him as overrated while some believe that he isn’t even the most promising talent at the club with that title instead belonging to Jamie Shackleton.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on Twitter…

Spurs fans slam Christian Eriksen for ineffective European final display

After an incredible run to the UEFA Champions League final, Tottenham Hotspur’s European dreams are over tonight after losing 2-0 to Liverpool.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side went above and beyond expectations at the start of the season to make the Madrid final and in many ways Spurs fans should be proud of their team.

However, tonight’s performance wasn’t effective at all and there are serious question marks being asked of a few of the club’s big name players.

Could the man in the video below be Spurs’ most overrated player? Decide for yourself…

Christian Eriksen stood out as one of the less impressive players on the pitch, failing to trouble the Liverpool defence or goalkeeper meaningfully across the 90 minutes.

Looking slow and sluggish throughout, many fans feel he should have performed much better or simply not have been selected by manager Mauricio Pochettino at all.

Spurs needed their most prominent players at their best to beat Liverpool and with players like Eriksen failing to impress then there will be some big decisions for the Tottenham manager to make this summer.

These fans took to Twitter on Saturday night to share their thoughts on the 27-year-old’s final display…

Wojciech Szczesny sends message to Aaron Ramsey ahead of reunion

[ad_pod ]

Aaron Ramsey’s Arsenal career has been prematurely brought to an end after more than eight years of service at the club.

The Wales international confirmed that he has played his last game for the club on

/Bw7Qj_fANFS/” data-lasso-> Instagram on Wednesday, with an injury sustained against Napoli in the second leg of a Europa League quarter final clash leaving him sidelined for the remainder of the season.

His emotional response to the news is more than understandable given the length of his spell in north London.

In the modern game it’s rare for a player to show a level of loyalty akin to that which the all-action midfielder has shown towards the Gunners, and former Arsenal man and current Juventus number one Wojciech Szczesny believes his spell commands legendary status at the club.

Szczesny and Ramsey are set for a reunion in Turin next season and it’s clear that the Poland international is excited for what lies ahead.

The Gunners faithful will perennially debate whether Ramsey deserves to be labelled a legend or not but, in the midst of an era which has seen plenty of Arsenal players leave the club for a fellow Premier League rival, it’s fair to say that he deserves gushing credit at the very least for the manner in which he has conducted himself this season and beyond.

Legend or not, the 28-year-old will be sorely missed.

Palace fans react as club announces legend Speroni will depart this summer

[ad_pod ]

Thursday 9th May 2019 marks a sad day for Palace fans and for Julian Speroni, as the goalkeeper announced his exit at the end of the season after almost 15 years at Selhurst Park.

The Argentine made 405 appearances for the Eagles – the most for a goalkeeper in the club’s history – keeping an incredible 112 clean sheets, with his 90 minutes in the FA Cup victory over Spurs set to be his last professional appearance for the south London outfit.

The 39-year-old was recently recognised with the Chairman’s Outstanding Contribution award for his service to the red and blue and leaves with legend status and plenty to be proud of.

A Crystal Palace fan shares his most gutting moment of the last 10 years supporting the Eagles in the video below…

He was crucial in Palace’s promotion to the Premier League in 2013 as he kept clean sheets in both legs of the play-off semi-final and then in the final against Watford – for that alone, Eagles fans will never forget what he did for the club.

The Selhurst Park faithful on Twitter were quick to request that he start against Bournemouth on Sunday in light of the news.

Gylfi Sigurðsson has become the envy of top-six Premier League clubs

[ad_pod ]

Everton’s season has mostly been underwhelming. Marco Silva has failed to ignite and invigorate the Toffees in the manner that many had expected. Their surprising 2-0 triumph against Chelsea, the first on home soil since the 13th of January, was a welcome result that has seemingly eased the pressure that was mounting on the manager’s shoulders.

Despite healthy summer investment, which included the addition of three players from Barcelona, the Toffees have failed to fulfil expectations. Irrespective of their unfavourable form, and the fact that they’re languishing in the bottom half of the table; there have been identifiable highlights. The form and promise of Richarlison, who has totalled 12 league goals (13 in all competitions) is an encouraging sign, while Gylfi Sigurðsson, valued at £27 million by Transfermarkt, is beginning to return to the peak of his powers, justifying the club’s hefty investment for his services in 2017.

At the age of 29, he’s sustained his influence in one of the world’s most decorated divisions and his importance to Everton, particularly this season, cannot be underestimated. However, for a player of his calibre who has continually succeeded at club and international level, should he don aspirations of one final big move?

During his inaugural season in Merseyside, the initial excitement of his arrival was masked by a disappointing total of seven-goal contributions in 27 league appearances; hardly indicative of his calibre or experience. Contrastingly, this season has been markedly different in its outlook for the Icelandic midfielder, with Sigurðsson contributing towards 15 goals (scoring 12 and providing three assists) in 31 Premier League games – averaging just shy of a goal contribution every two games. It’s the best goal tally that he has amassed in a single Premier League season, bettering his record in the Bundesliga too.

As an individual who rose to prominence with Reading, and has since represented Swansea City, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton, spectators are well versed to his qualities. A dead-ball specialist, a creative architect and an astute technician, the midfielder is one of the most gifted players outside the league’s top six teams.

In a Swansea side that was severely threatened by relegation, and suffocated from appropriate quality in every position, the Icelander contributed towards 20 league goals (nine goals, 11 assists), which almost, single-handedly, prevented the Welsh club from being relegated during the 2016/17 season. Similarly, he has been an integral figure to the recent success of his country, contributing towards 33 goals (20 goals, 13 assists) in 64 international caps.

To focus solely on his statistical output is a disservice to a player that makes the game seem so elementary in its progression. In the final third of the pitch, and when afforded space, Sigurðsson is challenging to negate, his ability to play incisive, penetrative passes and score from long distance ensures that he exhibits a versatile attacking skill set.

Continually, the midfielder has demonstrated his effectiveness at both club and international level and plausibly, he could be of immense benefit to a top-six team, willing to accommodate his creativity. A perceptible trend in modern football has been meaningful ball retention which leads to an abundance of chance creation, showcased in the Premier League through the footballing ideals of Klopp, Pochettino and Guardiola. This focus on meaningful use of possession and penetrating attacks is attuned to the specialist skill set that Sigurðsson exhibits.

As he displayed at Swansea and is continuing to illustrate at Everton, he is capable of impacting games purposefully, regardless of the quality that surrounds him. Plausibly, his influence will only heighten if surrounded by players of greater quality, and perhaps he should look beyond Goodison Park, to honour his talent and career with potential silverware.

The most successful teams require a continuous and varied flow of goals, dependence on one player, best encapsulated by Chelsea’s reliance on Eden Hazard, can be utterly problematic and it’s unsustainable for a team vying for trophies. Not many midfielders in the league demonstrate similar quality to Sigurðsson, especially not in their statistical contributions. Resultantly, the top-six teams should be paying closer attention to his magnificent season.

Hearts: Time to rebuild side with Djoum set to leave

Arnaud Djoum has bounced back from last year’s nightmare season, with a string of consistent performances for Hearts this season, that has seen him catch the eye of Ligue 1 side, Toulouse.

Having arrived at Hearts as a free agent in the summer of 2015, he was a mainstay in the team, before last season’s horror, which saw the player suffer no less than three ligament injuries.

After recovering from a medial ligament injury shortly into the season — only to suffer an Achilles one a month later — his season was ended with an Achilles rupture which kept him out of action from February until September last year.

But he showed true fighting spirit during his rehabilitation, and after winning his fitness battle, he has gone on to cement his place back in the Hearts midfield.

But the Cameroon international is out of contract at the end of the season, and with no new offer on the table from the Tynecastle club, he is currently able to speak to interested parties ahead of a summer move.

According to the Daily Star via The Scottish Sun, the French club are looking to rebuild their squad next season, hoping to improve on this year’s mid-table performance, and they see Djoum as the perfect man to fill one of their midfield slots.

Even taking into account the 29-year-old’s injuries last year, Hearts fans will still think they got everything they hoped for from the player, and that he arrived at Tynecastle for free, then fans will surely wish him well, when he leaves.

We think it would suit all parties for him to move on in the summer, but it will be essential that a suitable replacement is brought in, as Hearts should be looking to rebuild their own squad, in a bid to close the gap on Rangers and Celtic, and start looking to battle for a Europa League spot next season.

What are your thoughts on Djoum, Hearts fans? Would you offer him another contract? Or is it in everyone’s best interests for him to move on? Let us know…
