Spurs: Gold drops Bale update

Alasdair Gold has dropped an update on Tottenham Hotspur’s reported summer transfer target Gareth Bale.

What’s the talk?

According to a recent report by Italian media outlet TuttoMercatoWeb, the Real Madrid forward has already put pen to paper on a pre-contract agreement with Spurs ahead of a move back to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at the end of the current campaign.

However, in a recent Q&A on football.london, the Spurs correspondent appeared to pour cold water on the 32-year-old’s potential summer return to north London, suggesting that the Wales international would not fit into the way Antonio Conte wants his side to play.

Regarding Bale’s links with a move back to Tottenham, the journalist said:

“There are different ways to look at this. Various people within Spurs have shut down those Bale stories from Spain pretty quickly, saying there’s absolutely no truth in it.

“The flip side is, if I’m thinking from a cynical marketing perspective, Tottenham would surely consider bringing him back for one last hurrah of a season in front of a Tottenham Hotspur Stadium packed with crowds.

“However, from a football perspective, it makes little sense as trying to shoehorn the Welshman, who will be 33 then, into Conte’s demanding, high energy system.

“I just wonder whether it would be similar to the [Jose] Mourinho and Bale experiment and the winger’s even higher wages than last season as a free agent would be problematic if he’s not a regular starter either through Conte’s wishes or injuries.

“Bale would certainly bring the experience and winning mentality Conte needs in this Spurs team but I’m not sure how well he would suit a system with wing-backs.

“He would have to play further inside and there would be a pressure on him to get back and defend, which was a difficultly under Mourinho.”

Disaster for Conte

While it is undeniable that Bale returning to Spurs for the twilight years of his career would be an extremely romantic story, Gold is correct in his claim that the forward is far from the type of player that Conte requires in order to fully implement his particular brand of football.

Indeed, when comparing the £528k-per-week Welshman’s statistics from his 2020/21 campaign on loan at Spurs to that of Dejan Kulusevski, Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min so far this season, it is clear that Bale falls some way short in the metrics required to feature in Conte’s high-energy system.

For example, this term, Kulusevski has so far pressured an opponent a total of 249 times, Moura 229 times and Son 220 times, while Bale only pressured his opposition 125 times over his 20 Premier League appearances for Tottenham last time out.

Furthermore, regarding actually winning the ball back, Bale’s nine interceptions made in 2020/21 also falls some way short of Kulusevski’s 18, Moura’s 17 and Son’s 16 so far in the current campaign.

As such, while the £4.5m-rated forward’s overall returns of 16 goals and three assists over 34 appearances for Spurs last season were indeed impressive, when taking into account the type of player Conte requires in order for his brand of football to be successful, it would very much appear as if the signing of Bale – particularly on astronomical wages – would be something of a disaster for the 52-year-old Italian.

Morgan Sanson handed big lifeline at Villa

While Aston Villa managed to secure deals for four new senior players throughout the recent January transfer window, there was one standout pursuit that the Midlands club were unable to complete.

Having been linked with a move for Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus, Villa were unable to strike a deal and agree terms with the Italian club for the Uruguay midfielder, who has since made the move to fellow Premier League club Tottenham.

Despite this disappointment, one current midfielder at Villa who will have surely been pleased that Bentancur didn’t end up making the move to the club is Morgan Sanson, who arguably has a new lifeline moving forward following the failed pursuit of the Juventus ace.

Since joining the Villans last January from French club Marseille in a deal worth a reported £16m, the 27-year-old has only made 16 appearances across all competitions after struggling with illness and injury issues.

With just six appearances and two starts in the Premier League under his belt so far this season, it’s safe to say that game-time has not been particularly plentiful for the Frenchman, and it would have presumably been even harder to come by had Bentancur joined Steven Gerrard’s squad in January.

Taking that into account, and with Marvelous Nakamba still out injured, the next few weeks could be vital for the 27-year-old – who is currently picking up £59k-per-week according to Salary Sport – and his Villa career if he can make the most out of any opportunities which come his way.

However, with WhoScored currently listing the Frenchman as one of the lowest-rated players in Gerrard’s squad with an overall performance rating of 6.34/10, this suggests that he will need to vastly improve his displays on the pitch if he wants to have any chance of becoming an important figure in the team and end his season on a high note.

If he isn’t able to do that, Sanson could then find his place at the club under question should the manager not think that he has what it takes to help Villa to progress.

Tottenham: Spurs linked with Alexander Nubel

Tottenham have been linked with a late move for Bayern Munich goalkeeper Alexander Nubel.

The Lowdown: Nubel profiled

Nubel is 25 years of age and is currently out on loan at AS Monaco until the end of the 2022/23 campaign. He has been a regular for the French side, making 30 appearances in all competitions.

The German, described as a player with ‘extraordinary footballing ability’ by Klaus Thomforde, joined Bayern back in 2020 from Schalke.

He has featured just four times for the Bundesliga giants, and it seems as if Spurs are keen on bringing the 6 foot 3 shot-stopper to north London.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-2/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Spurs keen

As per German outlets Kicker and Bild, relayed by Sports Witness, Spurs have shown an interest in Nubel.

His displays for Monaco have caught the eye of Fabio Paratici and co, who are still looking to bolster their goalkeeping ranks despite Hugo Lloris penning a new contract earlier this month.

The Verdict: Not needed right now

Bayern have an option to cut short Nubel’s two-year loan spell in the summer, so perhaps it could be a transfer to assess then and not now.

Paratici surely has bigger fish to fry in the final days of the January window after failing so far to add to Antonio Conte’s squad, with moves for Adama Traore and Luis Diaz seemingly about to fall through.

Plenty of outfield areas could do with adding to, however, when it comes to options in goal, Spurs are fairly well-stocked until the summer with Lloris and Pierluigi Gollini.

-Alô torcida do São Paulo!

NUFC: Magpies eyeing Schlotterbeck

An update has emerged on Newcastle United’s interest in Freiburg centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck…

What’s the talk?

According to reporter Dharmesh Sheth on Sky Sports’ transfer show, via Bavarian Football Works, the Magpies are looking at the defender as a possible alternative to Lille’s Sven Botman as the Ligue 1 side are demanding £60m for the Dutchman this month.

The report claims that German giants Bayern Munich also have Schlotterbeck on their radar and could compete with the Toon for his signature.

Treat

Eddie Howe could seal an “absolute treat” for Newcastle by bringing Schlotterbeck to the club this month as he could be an excellent signing for the club.

The 22-year-old German has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.31 in the Bundesliga this season, showing that he is capable of delivering consistently high-quality performances on the pitch. This could make him a dream signing for the Magpies as they have conceded the most goals (42) in the Premier League this term and are in need of defensive improvements.

Writer Jacque Talbot has commented on the defender’s statistics this season, comparing him to a German legend in the process. He Tweeted: “The absolute state of Nico Schlotterbeck. Some Franz Beckenbauer level attacking percentiles. Newcastle would be in for an absolute treat if they can persuade Freiburg to let him go.”

Talbot accompanied his Tweet with a screenshot of the Freiburg man’s percentile ranks in a number of statistical categories across Europe’s top five leagues, per FB REF. He is in the 92nd percentile or higher in dribbles completed, progressive passes and touches for centre-backs, whilst he is in the 91st and 92nd percentile for tackles and interceptions respectively.

He is also naturally left-footed. This means that he can add balance to Newcastle’s possession game by being able to comfortably play on the left side, opening up more options on the ball instead of needing to shift it to his right foot before playing out from the back.

Therefore, the monster could be a sublime addition to Howe’s team as he has the quality in defending to improve the team whilst his capabilities on the ball could help the side to play more expansive football to entertain the fans.

The ex-Bournemouth boss must now ensure that he can get a deal over the line for Schlotterbeck before Bayern are able to make their move, if they are to make one at all.

Bielsa set for timely Leeds injury boost

Leeds United could be set for a huge and very timely injury boost after winger Jack Harrison was pictured back in the gym ahead of their Boxing Day clash with Liverpool…

What’s the latest?

The 23-year-old limped off during their heavy 4-1 defeat to Arsenal at the weekend, a worrying sign with the side already barren due to injuries. Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa was missing as many as 11 players, of which nine were first-team regulars.

So losing another key man in Harrison would have been a major blow before such a massive and hectic period of the season.

However, it appears that all is fine with the former Manchester City youth product after he posted an image to social media of him training in the gym at Thorp Arch (via MoT Leeds News).

The £13.5m-rated ace was pictured on a bike and he captioned it by saying he was “recovering,” so presumably that means he is all good heading into the remaining festive schedule.

Huge boost

Whilst this does not completely confirm his availability, it is certainly an exciting sign, particularly given the ongoing injury nightmare in west Yorkshire right now.

With the likes of Patrick Bamford, Daniel James and Rodrigo, Bielsa was light on attacking options. If they are all absent yet again, Harrison’s involvement will likely serve as a huge boost at a desperate time of need.

His season so far has hardly gone to plan, registering only one assist from 15 league appearances, via Transfermarkt, but on his day, he is a crucial player for the Argentinian head coach.

For instance, last season he directly contributed towards 16 goals in 34 starts, only missing two games for the club.

Such form saw him rank as Leeds’ fifth-best player, per WhoScored figures, just behind Kalvin Phillips, whilst only Raphinha managed to create more key chances and dribbles per game than the Englishman.

“He’s a player who, when he manages to play at his best version, he has a big influence on our offensive game,” once lauded Bielsa. That only goes to show his importance to the side even more.

Therefore, supporters around Elland Road should be buzzing that Harrison could be available post-Christmas when the struggling Yorkshiremen face Steven Gerrard’s resurgent Aston Villa side.

The fact that he is in the gym is encouraging.

AND in other news, Bielsa could unearth Leeds’ next Stuart Dallas in “unbelievable” 20 y/o gem “with no ego”…

Security assessment says 'credible' threat to IPL – reports

A report commissioned by the players’ unions in England, Australia and South Africa has said that the recent terror threats are credible and that security cannot be guaranteed in India

A report commissioned by the players’ unions in England, Australia and South Africa and written by the England team’s security adviser Reg Dickason has said that the recent threat from the 313 Brigade, Al-Qaeda’s operational arm in Pakistan, is credible and that security cannot be guaranteed in India, according to newspaper reports in England and Australia. The assessment has apparently already been passed on to the players’ unions and the cricketers concerned have been informed of its contents.England are currently headed to Bangladesh for a full series after contesting a short two-match Twenty20 series against Pakistan in the UAE. The England players signed up for the IPL are Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Eoin Morgan, Owais Shah, Ravi Bapora, Dimitri Mascarenhas, and Graham Napier. Collingwood, England’s Twenty20 captain, and Pietersen are expected to join the IPL only on March 24 but the rest are due to play the entire tournament.”I am aware of the reported security risks and am in constant communication with Delhi Daredevils,” said Collingwood, who till then had not seen the report. “I will make a decision once I have had a chance to review all the available information and talk to the relevant people.”A report in the said no final decision had been taken yet by the Australian Cricketers’ Association on what advice to give the country’s large contingent of players who have signed up with the IPL. ”We’re not in a position to talk about it right now,” Paul Marsh, the ACA’s chief executive, told the paper. ”I’ve just received it and I’m working my way through it.”Security fears regarding the IPL intensified after a string of statements warning countries not to send its representatives to major sports events being staged in India, including the IPL. Tim May, the chief executive of FICA, the international players’ union, has warned of a spate of player withdrawals from the IPL due to security concerns over playing in India.May’s statements came on a day the Jaipur police said they had received intelligence inputs of a terrorist threat relating to the one-day international in the city between India and South Africa on Sunday. This followed other reported threats targeting the Commonwealth Games and the Hockey World Cup, both due to be hosted in India this year. Earlier, the Shiv Sena, a right-wing regional political party, had claimed it would not allow Australian cricketers to participate in the competition as a protest against attacks on Indian students in Australia.

Sunderland fans slam Lynden Gooch v Ipswich

Flocking to Twitter, many Sunderland fans were left unimpressed by another lacklustre display from midfielder Lynden Gooch despite their victory over Ipswich Town on Saturday.

The Black Cats ran out 2-0 victors as they finally returned to winning ways, coming off their barren run of six consecutive matches without a victory in normal time (BBC).

Sunderland’s win keeps them well in contention for automatic promotion as they fight among one of the closest races England’s third tier has seen in recent years.

Only five points separate sixth place from the summit of League One and Lee Johnson’s side are right in the mix, helped in no small part by their victory over The Tractor Boys.

However, it was anything but routine as Sunderland left it late and secured the win in dramatic fashion with two goals in the last five minutes. Indeed, Luke O’Nien opened the scoring in the 85th minute before Aiden McGeady sealed all three points with an injury time penalty.

Sunderland fans slam Gooch

Despite this precious win, one man who failed to impress was Gooch, as numerous fans were quick to point out on social media.

This isn’t the first time he has been criticised by many Black Cats supporters this season, either, with the 25-year-old’s recent performance against Bradford also coming under fire.

It’s little wonder they felt the same way against Ipswich judging by Gooch’s SofaScore numbers, with the American ranking as Sunderland’s lowest-rated player on the day with 6.1. He also picked up another booking, his sixth of the season, whilst succeeding with none of his crosses, completing zero dribbles and winning just 33% of his duels (SofaScore).

Taking these numbers into account, you can understand why supporters felt his performance was “shocking” – check out some of their verdicts from Twitter below.
