Aston Villa got last summer’s transfer window horribly wrong.

Over £100m was spent, and despite all this new talent coming in, the Birmingham outfit only secured their Premier League survival on the final day of the season.

Understandably, the higher-ups at Villa Park feel as though something has to change, and they have made steps towards that, parting ways with their transfer chief Suso and bringing in Johan Lange.

Gregg Evans documented what this change means, and he mentioned that the Villans already have some players of a certain mould lined up.

What’s been said then?

The Atheltic journalist wrote a long and detailed piece about Lange’s background and how his role at Villa Park is likely to affect the club, and he stated that the transfer strategy this term is going to go in a completely different direction than last season.

“First and foremost, The Athletic understands that tried and trusted players from the English game will be targeted and that some of those have already been lined up.” Evans wrote.

Better strategy

Dean Smith’s side may fare a lot better with this transfer strategy than they did last season.

We’ve seen it all too often that players from abroad sometimes struggle to get to grips with the tempo and tenacity of the Premier League, and that’s where Villa struggled this term with the likes of Wesley and Mbwana Samatta scoring just six league goals between them, while Bjorn Engels was often criticised by fans throughout the season.

It’s no coincidence that four of Villa’s five highest-rated players on WhoScored had experience in England before this season, with Frederic Guilbert the exception to the rule on this occasion.

Fingers crossed Smith can get the right profile of player in and guide Villa to a lot more comfortable position next season.

Jose Mourinho hasn’t had the easiest time in charge of Tottenham Hotspur so far. 

Indeed, after a 3-2 win derby win over West Ham, everything went downhill from there.

Eight months later, Tottenham find themselves in eighth place, four points behind his old club Manchester United, and nine points away from fourth-placed Chelsea, who are managed by his former player Frank Lampard.

Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Steven Bergwijn and Moussa Sissoko all succumbed to injury, although they have now made a full recovery. However, Dele Alli was banned for the game against Manchester United, and Japhet Tanganga and Juan Foyth have been ruled out for the foreseeable future.

Nevertheless, Spurs are targeting closing the gap on United, as Manchester City’s Champions League ban could mean fifth place will be enough to qualify for the competition.

Speaking exclusively to Sky Sports, Mourinho insists his front six are more than capable of carrying the club higher up the table.

Alli has now served his suspension and Lucas Moura is fully fit and they will now join the likes of Kane, Bergwijn, Son and Erik Lamela in competing for a place in the starting lineup.

Mourinho told Sky Sports: “So now we have the six players available which is a very, very good attacking force that allows us to start the game and have players on the bench to make changes in case we have a need.

“And I think in this moment, with this long period without football, the attacking players especially, it is not easy for them. So to have in this moment, three plus three is a great situation for us.”

As the Premier League heads into the crunch stage of the competition, coaches will have to juggle with team selection to try and share the workload from a busy schedule.

Mourinho will have noticed the problems affecting his counterpart Mikel Arteta across London, as Arsenal are facing a transfer dilemma after Bernd Leno, Granit Xhaka and Pablo Mari picked up injuries in the past week.

Kane is the club’s top scorer this season, despite the fact the 26-year-old missed a huge chunk of games after suffering a hamstring injury in the loss to Southampton on New Year’s Day.

Meanwhile, Bergwijn continued his fine form after the break, as he opened the scoring against Man United.

With Alli and Moura coming back into the fold, Mourinho now has so many options to choose from, and although this may cause a selection headache, it should improve his chances of making the top four this season.

Andrea Radrizzani selling a slice of his stake in Leeds United is an idea that has been bound around for quite some time now with rumours of both QSI and the San Francisco 49ers investing in the club circulating for what seems like an eternity.

Phil Hay reported last month that the QSI deal looks unlikely at the moment and that people at the club believe further investment from the 49ers is more likely, and unsurprisingly, reports have emerged this weekend to that effect.

On the surface, QSI look like the more appealing option, considering the unrivalled wealth of the Qatari group, but when you look at the sporting pedigree of the 49ers it’s hard to say that they wouldn’t be the perfect group to take the club forward.

The US-based investors, of course, have a footing in sport already, running a San Francisco based NFL outfit, but the success they’ve garnered over in the States shows that they could be exactly what Leeds need at the moment.

United are going through a transition period after being promoted, and the 49ers group certainly know how to handle that, helping the Californa-based outfit through their move into the Levi’s Stadium while still bringing success on the field.

They made the Super Bowl this year after winning their conference final, and they’ve managed to become a success through a series of shrewd business moves with John Lynch winning the 2019 award for Executive of the Year in the NFL, add into that a reported net worth of $3.5bn and you have a recipe for success.

Leeds have plans of expanding Elland Road to a 50,000 capacity ground, and with the 49ers knowing how to market and manage a sports team to perfection, they could be exactly what the club need during this time.

United may need something of a corporate facelift as they head back into the Premier League for the first time in 16 years, as a lot has changed since 2004. They have just struck a big deal with Adidas, and with the connections their investors already have in the sporting world through their NFL franchise, they could help them find a few more deals of that ilk.

From a business standpoint having a team as savvy as the 49ers on board surely won’t do United any harm, and perhaps it’s favourable to the QSI deal that was previously rumoured.

A lot of Celtic fans are reminiscing after celticbible posted a video of Hoops fans at Ibrox generating a great atmosphere, one that is much louder than the home support.

West Ham United fans have called for Manuel Pellegrini to leave the club after they lost 3-2 to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Spurs won their first Premier League away game since January, when they defeated Fulham 2-1, at the London Stadium and actually took a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane.

Michail Antonio hit the net to bring the Hammers back into the game and Angelo Ogbonna nabbed a second in injury time, though it came too late to have an effect on the game.

The result is the Irons’ third successive defeat and also their seventh consecutive game without a win in the league.

Indeed, in those games, West Ham have scored eight goals and conceded 16.

And fans are hoping that the Hammers powerbrokers either sack the manager or that he decides to walk away.

Nicolas Pepe played 78 minutes of Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United in the Premier League on Monday night.

And it was another tough outing for the summer arrival from Lille.

That said, the statistics show that he was heavily involved in the action.

Indeed, according to WhoScored, Pepe had three shots, five dribbles and made five tackles during a lively display against the Blades.

There was again a lack of an end product, though, and Pepe has struggled to show his best form for the Gunners since moving to the club ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

The 24-year-old will surely be given time to make his mark at the Emirates Stadium.

However, his recent struggles have gone down very well with the Tottenham Hotspur fans, who once again poked fun at Pepe on Monday night after criticising his performance against Watford in September.

Speaking at the club’s annual all-staff meeting, Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has launched a stunning defence of the recruitment strategy in place at Old Trafford.

What did he say?

The Red Devils made just three permanent signings in the summer transfer window, bringing in Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were linked with a whole host of other players, including the likes of Paulo Dybala and Christian Eriksen, but neither ended up joining before the end of the deadline.

The Manchester side have since come under criticism for their lack of replacements for the departed Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez, and their miserable start to the current campaign has simply added to the scrutiny on the work being done off-the-pitch.

However, Woodward vehemently defended the Red Devils’ approach to the transfer market, insisting they have the best available people working together.

He said (as quoted by BBC Sport): “There is a myth that we have non-football people making football decisions. I think that is insulting to the brilliant people who work on the football side in this club. We’ve expanded our recruitment department in recent years and we believe this now runs in an efficient and productive way.

“Player recommendations and decisions are worked on by this department and by the first-team manager and his staff, not by senior management.”

Insulting

Attempting to defend his colleagues is understandable, but Woodward’s unbelievably brash attempts at insisting the club are making the right decisions when it comes to the transfer market is mind-boggling. The Red Devils left themselves short on attacking cover this summer, and it has already started to have a major detrimental effect to their side’s performances on the pitch – they have scored just nine times in eight Premier League games.

What is truly “insulting” is for Woodward to deflect the criticism away from himself, and onto nameless groups of individuals. The United chief showed no sign of holding his hand up for the club’s failures in recent years, and his latest comments have simply served to under-line why there is such a feeling of resentment towards him.

وتابع: “هذا المسؤول استقبلني في المطار وبعد انضمامي للمران فوجئت بسؤال ديسابر لي عن المركز الذي ألعب فيه، وفي ذلك الوقت كنت بعيدًا عن التدريبات بسبب انتهاء الموسم في السعودية، وطالبت الجهاز الفني بعدم زيادة الحمل البدني، وهو ما لم يحدث”.

وأردف: “خضت مباراة ودية وقدمت مستوى جيد والمدير الفني قال إنني سأكون أساسيًا، ثم فوجئت بخروجي من القائمة في أول مباراة، وعندما تحدثت معه قال لي إنه طلب ضم مدافع ويدرس الدفع بي كخط وسط مدافع، وعندما تحدثت مع مسؤول بيراميدز والذي كان مديرًا للتعاقدات، قال لي إن ديسابر يرى أن الدوري السعودي ضعيف، وعرض عليّ الخروج للإعارة”.

وكشف: “في أولى مبارياتي مع بيراميدز تعرضت للإصابة، والجهاز الطبي كان السبب، اشتكيت من آلام والجهاز طالبني بخوض التدريبات رغم ذلك وأُصِبت ثم تلقيت العلاج، وبعدها دفعوا بي مبكرًا فتجددت الإصابة”.

واستكمل: “واجهت تجاهل غريب، وبدأت التأهيل خارج النادي وحصلت على إذن بذلك، ثم تولى مهمة تدريب الفريق المستشار الفني، ففوجئت بطلبه مقاطع فيديو لي لكي يتعرف على مستواي، وهذا أمر غريب جدًا”.

وواصل عطوة: “تجاهلوني أثناء إصابتي، في الوقت الذي قرر فيه النادي سفر لاعب مصاب بالخلفية للعلاج، بينما أنا أصبت مرتين، والمركز الإعلامي لم ينشر لي أي صور مع الفريق”.

واستطرد: “علمت من أحد وكلاء اللاعبين أنني على رأس قائمة الراحلين، وتحدثت مع مسؤولي بيراميدز فأبلغوني أنني سأتدرب منفردًا حتى رحيلي، ودفعوا بي مع أخصائي تأهيل رغم أنني لست مصابًا، ثم فاجئني أحد المسؤولين بقوله (كتر خيرنا أننا سبناك تتدرب الفترة دي مع الفريق، ولن نجهزك حتى تذهب لنادي آخر جاهز!)”.

وأتم عطوة: “هناك أشياء تحدث في نادي بيراميدز لا يعلمها أحد ولا يمكنني الحديث عنها، أنا تكلمت فقط عن الجزء الخاص بي، وعندما علمت بقرار رحيلي تحدثت مع المدير الفني أروابارينا، وفاجئني بأن بقائي أو رحيلي بيد الإدارة، حتى وإن كنت ألعب بشكل جيد”.
