Aston Villa: Fans react to Todd Cantwell news

Aston Villa are now expected to pursue Norwich City midfielder Todd Cantwell, according to Sky Sports.

And, as to be expected, a number of Villa fans have been sharing their thoughts to the update on social media.

Jack Grealish’s £100m move to Manchester City appears to be finalised, with Sky Sports suggesting Villa will go for Cantwell.

The Canaries and Villa have a good relationship following the deal for Emiliano Buendia earlier this summer, however, Norwich do not want to lose the 23-year-old so close to the start of the new campaign.

The report claims that it will take a significant bid for Cantwell to leave Carrow Road, as Norwich have the option to extend the attacking midfielder’s deal by a further 12 months next summer.

Villa fans react

@villareport shared Sky Sports’ claim on Cantwell on Twitter. This is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply, with many below not exactly keen to see Cantwell arrive at Villa Park.

Man City dealt Harry Kane blow

Manchester City are edging closer to the signing of Jack Grealish from Aston Villa, but a recent report has suggested that would make any move for Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane very difficult this summer.

What’s the word?

Grealish and Kane have emerged as Pep Guardiola’s two top targets for the Citizens this summer and the former looks close to completing a move to the Etihad in a deal worth around £100m.

However, Manchester Evening News journalist Liam Corless has claimed that the deal for the Villa captain could see City end their interest in Kane, unless they are able to raise a significant amount of money through player sales between now and the end of the window.

As Spurs will likely demand well in excess of £100m for their talismanic striker, with chairman Daniel Levy clearly keen to keep him in North London, it simply isn’t financially viable for Manchester City to bring him in as well as Grealish in the same transfer window without significant sales.

A blow for Guardiola?

It seems baffling that City are seemingly prioritising a move for Grealish over the £108m-rated Kane when you consider the options that Guardiola currently has in their respective positions.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

Whilst the Spanish manager can boast talents such as Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez on the wing, he has just Gabriel Jesus available as a senior striker in his squad following Sergio Aguero’s exit earlier in the summer.

Although the Citizens were sensational at times last season, they lacked a clinical striker on a number of occasions towards the end of the season and were punished by Chelsea in the FA Cup and Champions League, so signing a world-class talent such as Kane should really have been City’s priority ahead of the new season.

The 28-year-old striker is clearly keen on a move , with reports earlier today claiming that he has failed to turn up for training at Tottenham Hotspur but if City do complete a move for Grealish, it seems as if they will have to sell a number of first-team options before even considering a bid for the England captain.

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936”]

City fans certainly won’t be happy with this update, as they too will surely have been hoping to sign a clinical striker this summer, and now it seems as if a deal for Kane is going to be very difficult for the Citizens to complete and if they are to sign him, they may need to cash in on another star player.

And, in other news… Imagine him and Foden: Txiki can secure City’s future with swoop for “very strong” 18 y/o

Hamza Choudhury wants Leicester exit

Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury is seeking a move away from the King Power Stadium this summer as he searches for regular game time next season.

What’s the story?

According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle United remain hopeful of concluding a deal for the tough-tackling 23-year-old, and claim sources have told them that Choudhury has instructed his representatives to find him a new club.

The report states that the Newcastle hierarchy are aware of the former England Under-21 international’s wishes, although the club aren’t in a position to sign him on a permanent basis.

He’s not good enough

Choudhury was first linked with a move to St. James’ Park back in January, and Steve Bruce could finally secure his man this summer.

The £6.3 million-rated youngster was tipped for big things following his first-team debut in 2017 and has gone on to make 72 appearances for his boyhood club over the last four years.

However, Choudhury’s progress has been significantly stunted of late, with the likes of Wilfried Ndidi and Youri Tielemans keeping him on the bench for large spells.

He started just four Premier League games throughout 2020/21, and the arrival of Boubakary Soumare from Lille is expected to force him further down the Leicester pecking order.

With Brendan Rodgers’ charges achieving consecutive fifth-place finishes and a maiden FA Cup crown under the Northern Irish tactician’s tutelage, it’s hard to make a case for Choudhury being deserving of more minutes at the Midlands outfit.

And a hugely disappointing 6.19 WhoScored rating from his 10 top-flight outings last term is evidence that he’s not currently good enough to force his way into Leicester’s starting XI.

His departure on loan could be the most beneficial solution for all parties involved. The Foxes would free up funds on their wage bill without permanently losing a promising prospect, Choudhury would get some much-needed minutes under his belt and Newcastle would strengthen their squad whilst working on a very limited budget.

It remains to be seen whether the Englishman has a long-term future with Leicester, but a loan move away from his hometown appears to be the best option at this moment in time.

Fulham handed boost in Harry Wilson pursuit

Fulham have been handed a boost in their bid to bring Harry Wilson to Craven Cottage.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Goal, who claimed that Marco Silva’s side are now leading the race to sign the Liverpool winger this summer, with the Cottagers appearing the most likely destination for the 24-year-old.

The report added that personal terms would not be an issue between the Wales international and the Championship club, although it remains to be seen whether or not Fulham will be willing to match Liverpool’s £15m valuation of the forward.

Finally, it is claimed that Jurgen Klopp’s side are unwilling to consider a loan move for Wilson, which is believed to have ruled out the likes of Swansea City, Benfica and West Bromwich Albion, all of whom have been reported to be interested in the winger.

Huge coup

Considering Wilson’s remarkable record in the Championship, should Fulham indeed go on to get a deal over the line for the 24-year-old this summer, it can easily be argued that the Welshman’s arrival would be a huge coup for the club.

Indeed, over his 37 Championship appearances while on loan at Cardiff City last season, the £15.3m-rated man bagged seven goals, provided 11 assists and created 11 big chances for his teammates.

These metrics saw the man whose Klopp dubbed a “world-class” striker of the ball earn an average SofaScore match rating of 7.20, ranking him as Mick McCarthy’s second-best player in the league last time out.

His returns during his time in Wales only add to the impressive hauls the £41k-per-week man has managed with Championship clubs previously, having scored seven goals and provided four assists over 13 appearances for Hull City as well as a further 16 goals and four assists over 43 appearances for Derby County.

In total, Wilson has scored 29 goals and provided 19 assists over 90 appearances in the Championship, a fine record considering his position on the pitch. With Fulham being rather goal-shy in the Premier League last term – Bobby Decordova-Reid was their top scorer with five for the campaign – adding a player of the Welshman’s prolific nature can only be seen as a positive for the club.

As such, with Silva undoubtedly hoping to secure an immediate return to the Premier League with Fulham next season, the addition of the Liverpool man would certainly provide a huge boost to the 44-year-old’s chances of going on to achieve this feat.

With the latest reports suggesting that Fulham look on course to win the race for the winger, things would very much appear to be looking on the up for Silva at Craven Cottage.

The buck stops with me – Hussain

England captain Nasser Hussain admitted that he had been mistaken to put Australia in on the opening day of the first Test against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane.

CricInfo10-Nov-2002England captain Nasser Hussain admitted that he had been mistaken to put Australia in on the opening day of the first Test against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane.Australia declared their second innings on 296 for five, leaving England a winning target of 464, but they collapsed to 79 all out off just 28.2 overs to lose by 384 runs.”We played poorly in parts and today was not very good,” Hussain said. “We’ve lost in places like Sri Lanka and come back before, but Australia are setting the benchmark in world cricket at the moment and this will be our toughest test to date. We’ve just got to work hard in the nets and turn it round ourselves.””I read the wicket wrong on the first day and the buck stops with me on thatone,” he added. “I just thought if there was anything in the wicket we needed our young bowlers to get something, but there wasn’t anything in it.”However the Australian captain Steve Waugh revealed that he too had been planning to bowl if he had won the toss.”We were planning to bowl,” said Waugh. “There was a bit in the wicket butEngland didn’t bowl well. The significance of the toss is overrated though. Whatever you do first you’ve got to do it well.”There’s no doubt England will find it hard to come back from this, it’s a pretty devastating loss. But that’s why you play Test cricket, to see whether you can come back from adversity, and they’ve certainly found themselves in a tough position now.”In the end it’ll probably be written up as an easy Test match win but we had to fight back hard on day three. I think England will have a lot more in store for us in the rest of the series. They’ve already shown that they can come back so there’s no reason why they can’t do it again.”Waugh was full of praise for Man-of-the-Match Matthew Hayden, who added a rapid 103 to his first-innings 197. “Matty Hayden is batting almost as well as anyone in the history of the game at the moment,” he said.”It was a pretty special Test match obviously, especially playing in front of my home crowd,” said Hayden. “It’s wonderful that you can get an opportunity to represent your country and then to achieve a milestone like that is something special.”

Australia brimming with confidence before first serious test

Fresh from their short sojourn in the Maldives Islands, where they relaxed after booking themselves into the ICC Champions Trophy semi-finals with two emphatic victories, Australia take on Sri Lanka today brimming with confidence

Charlie Austin26-Sep-2002Fresh from their short sojourn in the Maldives Islands, where they relaxed after booking themselves into the ICC Champions Trophy semi-finals with two emphatic victories, Australia take on Sri Lanka today brimming with confidence.Since failing to qualify for the VB Series finals last summer, Australia have excelled in the one-day game, brushing aside South Africa 5-1 earlier in the year, walloping both Pakistan and Kenya at Nairobi last month and then crushing both New Zealand and Bangladesh here in Sri Lanka. No wonder coach John Buchanan is pleased with the side’s progress: “There’s a lot of good signs that things are moving in the right direction … on their day this is a very, very talented side. If everything comes together in one effort other teams will find it very difficult to deal with.”However, he also sounded a warning note, well aware that Australia face a stern challenge against tournament hosts in conditions ideally suited to Sri Lanka’s spinners.”I sense at the moment we haven’t been totally tested and we’ll find that out on Friday night.”Captain Ricky Ponting agreed: “This is a big game for us. As a captain this is going to be the biggest game, apart from my first as the captain. But we know that we are a good side, and we know that if we play to our best, we are going to be hard to beat.””They are a very good side, we are a pretty good side too. It’s going to be tough but we are not going to complicate things too much. It is just another game of cricket and we are going to go out to get the basics of the one-day cricket well, and if we do that we will be right in the game.”Ponting admits that the toss will be important on a pitch at its best for batting in the afternoon.”I have said right through the tournament that my preference here will be to bat first. South Africa got themselves into a good position last night but they dug themselves into a hole they couldn’t get out of.”But win or loss he claimed his side would just roll up their sleeves and get on with the job: “We are going to go out and do whatever we can to perform. If that means to scratch around to make 220 and then defend the total, then that is what we will do. If it is going to be chasing a big total or defend a small total, we are confident that we can do that as well.”Muttiah Muralitharan, who has taken 38 wickets in 17 games at Premadasa International Stadium, conceding just 3.31 runs per over, is identified as the primary threat.”He is a world-class bowler,” said Ponting. “He is going to be the hardest bowler not only to score off but also their main wicket-taking bowler. We have left it to the individual players to work out a game plan to play him.”Damien Martyn is set to return to the side after recovering from a hip injury sustained during the New Zealand game when he top scored with 73.”Damien had a work out in the nets yesterday and he should be 100% fit for tomorrow,” said Ponting. The only decision for the selectors is whether an extra spinner should be included. The slower bowlers have proved the most effective bowlers at Premadasa, especially during the latter overs, but Ponting suggested that they would make do without off-spinning all-rounder Nathan Hauritz.”It is going to be hard to change the side that has been performing well over the last few weeks,” he said. “We have part time spinners in Lehmann and Bevan if required. The Sri Lankan batsman would rather play spinners than the quick stuff, so it is probably unlikely that we will change the side.”Australia (From)Adam Gilchrist (wk), Matthew Hayden, Jimmy Maher, Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Bevan, Darren Lehmann, Damien Martyn, Shane Watson, Shane Warne, Nathan Hauritz, Andy Bichel, Brett Lee, Jason Gillespie, Glenn McGrath.

Aston Villa edge closer to signing Tammy Abraham

Aston Villa appear to be edging closer to potentially signing Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham this summer amid a recent transfer update.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks have linked Dean Smith’s side with a move for the £50k-a-week England international, and it appears things are progressing in the right direction.

According to journalist Rudy Galetti, the Midlands club are in advanced talks for Abraham, and are preparing a big-money offer for the striker.

He added that Abraham could leave Stamford Bridge and Chelsea “soon”.

Dean Smith will be buzzing

Given that he’s worked with him before and has seen first-hand what he can do, Smith will no doubt be buzzing at the news that Abraham is inching closer to wearing a Villa shirt again.

In his first spell at Villa Park when he spent a season on loan in the Championship, the England international netted 26 goals in 40 games, as well as coming in with three assists too.

And, speaking after his goal-scoring display against Swansea, the Villa boss himself said: “Tammy is a handful and he knows better than me that he should have been walking away with the match ball tonight. But he scored the winning goal, he’s a hell of a talent. Tammy put in a hell of a shift up front on his own and proved he is a fine player.”

Having already completed deals for both Emi Buendia and Ashley Young, this latest news that Villa are in “advanced talks” for Abraham will be music to the ears of Smith who will no doubt setting his sights on earning a top-ten finish in the Premier League next season.

The fact that the club are being so aggressive in the transfer market bodes well for Smith and Villa, and it’s exactly why the manager will be delighted if he does get Abraham.

Meanwhile, Matt Maher has dropped a major Aston Villa transfer update…
