Aston Villa fans praise Trezeguet’s performance against Wolves

Aston Villa were unable to get their Premier League season back on track in Sunday’s league fixture against Wolves, losing 2-1 to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, but consecutive league goals for summer signing Trezeguet has led to a number of the club’s fans praising the Egyptian international’s promising performance.

It was merely a consolation strike when Trezeguet found the back of the net in injury time, but the battling display from the £8.75m summer signing means the forward is seemingly finding some goalscoring form at a time where the West Midlands side are certainly in need of their attacking players stepping up and delivering.Â

It was a disappointing performance from Villa’s squad on Sunday, with goals from Ruben Neves and Raul Jimenez enough to consign Dean Smith’s side to a third consecutive Premier League defeat.

However, reacting to a tweet he composed after the game these fans were certainly appreciative of Trezeguet’s performance; despite yet another poor result for the newly-promoted side.

Here are some of the best reactions to Trezeguet’s display against Wolves.

Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings torn apart by England fans

England fans on Twitter have been ripping into Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings after his less than impressive performance for the Three Lions on Sunday evening.

Mings’ performance was judged to be so bad that his name was actually trending on Twitter for a little while, and a little look at the reaction to his performance shows that it wasn’t for a positive reason.

The Villa centre-half was making only his second appearance for his country, but there are some fans that seemingly don’t want to see him lining up for Gareth Southgate’s side again in the near future as they’ve been slamming him after his performance against Kosovo.

It may seem strange for a centre-back to be so heavily criticised during a game in which his team kept a clean-sheet, but fans were incredibly displeased by what they saw from the former Bournemouth defender.

Here’s what Three Lions supporters have been saying on social media…

QPR’s Dominic Ball could help fix key defensive problem

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Mark Warburton is yet to find the answer to QPR’s defensive problems but the solution could come in the form of Dominic Ball.

On the chalkboard

The former Rangers player was brought to West London over the summer on a free by the R’s boss, who seems to be a fan of the 24-year-old, having also signed him for the Scottish outfit.

He has started just seven league games so far but the R’s have won the majority of those matches, and if he is given the role of protecting the defence then that could be key for his team.

Warburton has shown that a 3-5-2 formation could be his chosen system now Lee Wallace has returned, and if Ball were included from the start it could free up the likes of Eberechi Eze and Josh Scowen to display their usual effectiveness.

Added to that, Ilias Chair’s performances have dropped off in recent matches and given he is not the best defensively – average just 0.3 interceptions per game this term – replacing him could lead to an improvement on that front.

Complete midfielder

QPR could benefit from Ball’s defensive awareness and if given the sole responsibility of watching over an opposition player he could be a very effective player for Warburton.

He offers more than just defensive capabilities, however, and doesn’t often give the ball away, which means his mistakes are less frequent. A pass accuracy of 84% is evidence of that, and is an aspect of his play which suits Warburton’s philosophy, whose team have averaged 54% possession in the Championship.

As well as that, his average of two tackles per game is the fourth most of any player in the QPR squad, which suggests that the R’s are in need of a player who can provide more bite in midfield.

With an away trip to Fulham coming up after Middlesbrough fixture – a team which has scored 23 league goals – there will be concern for Warburton about his team’s vulnerability, but Ball would ease his worries.

The former Rotherham player started in difficult away matches at Sheffield Wednesday and Millwall, both of which QPR won by a narrow margin, and if he can maintain or improve his average of one interception per game then QPR should steadily improve defensively.

QPR’s Eberechi Eze delivered a coming of age performance vs Hull

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Every now and again a young football delivers a performance that makes people sit up and take note.

Gareth Bale’s second half hat-trick at the San Siro against Inter Milan back in 2010 springs to mind, a game that defined the Welshman and put his name up in lights.

In this instance, Eberechi Eze’s performance against Hull City on Saturday could well fall into that category – on a smaller scale to Bale’s, obviously.

We are by no means comparing the 21-year-old’s two-goal display against the Tigers to the now Real Madrid star’s rampage in the Italian city of Milan, although it was one that should open people’s eyes as to just how good this young man really is.

Before the match at the KCOM Stadium kicked off, Eze already had four goals and two assists in 11 Championship games this term – equalling his four-goal haul from the 2018/19 campaign in 31 less games.

After the final whistle, the former Millwall man did more than just add two goals to that total – he presumably left those who watched his 5-star display open-mouthed at what they had witnessed.

The first sign that the England U21 international was in the mood came when he won the first of his two penalties, picking up the ball from deep inside his own half and storming up the pitch with determination, drive and intent.

Understandably, the only way Hull could stop him was to foul him, and by that point he had already made it into their box.

Penalty. Eze takes. Goal.

Another mesmeric dribble saw the R’s No.10 upended once more inside the box, where he again dispatched confidently.

The two dribbles that earned him a penalty were just a couple of the six he completed, while he also managed to get all four of his shots on target.

In addition to that, the attacking midfielder also made an impressive four key passes, whilst he was also fouled on four occasions as Grant McCann’s side simply couldn’t deal with him.

He has shown flashes of his undoubted quality over the years, but this performance against a side who actually took the lead through Jarrod Bowen felt like a coming of age showing from the blossoming young footballer.

Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips posts on Instagram after two key players return from injury

Phillips was clearly pleased about beating West Brom at Elland Road, but his Instagram post indicates that he was just as happy about the return of Ayling and Roberts.

You can understand why the midfielder is buzzing to see his teammates return, as Ayling was a key player for Leeds last term, starting 40 league games, and Roberts was fantastic when he moved into the number ten role after the departure of Samu Saiz.

Man United fans discuss Bruno Fernandes’ Portugal performance

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United fans have been on social media discussing the performance of Bruno Fernandes during Portugal’s 4-2 win over Serbia on Saturday night.

Fernandes was strongly linked with a move to United throughout the summer transfer window but ultimately remained with Sporting Lisbon.

The 24-year-old played 85 minutes of the Euro 2020 qualifier against Serbia before being replaced by Joao Moutinho with the visitors closing in on the win.

There were those United supporters who were impressed by what they saw from the attacker during the European qualifier.

However, others suggested that they were glad that their club did not move for the Portuguese due to his sloppiness in possession of the ball.

United have not exactly been full of creativity from midfield this term, and it will be very interesting to see whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to solve that problem during the January transfer window.

Tottenham fans should keep their eyes on Argentina’s Giovani Lo Celso

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Giovani Lo Celso could be in action for Argentina when they take on Chile in an international friendly on Friday morning.

Tottenham’s Hotspur’s summer signing has yet to make his full Premier League debut for the club but he enjoyed an excellent cameo in the north London derby against Arsenal at the weekend.

Replacing Son Heung-min for the latter stages of the game, the attacking midfielder was a picture of calm in the derby chaos, even flummoxing Gunners star Dani Ceballos with an excellent piece of skill.

He could be included in Lionel Scaloni’s team for the upcoming friendly, having been named in the squad alongside the likes of Manuel Lanzini and Paulo Dybala.

Lo Celso has already won a total of 18 caps for his country, scoring two goals, and was included in the 2018 World Cup squad; he didn’t play a single minute in the tournament, however.

He was ever-present in the Copa America, though, playing six games, in a variety of positions; he was deployed on both flanks and in central midfield. Lo Celso scored in the 2-0 win over Venezuela in the quarter-finals and laid on an assist in the 2-1 win over Chile in the third-place play-off; Argentina lost their semi-final clash with Brazil 2-0.

It remains to be seen where he will be played by Scaloni, but he is most regularly played as an attacking midfielder and Spurs fans can hope to catch a glimpse of what he will bring to the club when he is fully fit.

Indeed, he has thus far played a total of 44 minutes for Spurs, with his most notable display coming in the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United, in which he played 28 minutes.

While the signs have been promising, he has yet to really make an impact, purely because he hasn’t had the chance to.

At international level, though, he has already shown what he can do and will be out to do the same again when Argentina take on first Chile and then Mexico.

Spurs fans will want to keep their eyes peeled.

Leeds in danger of making a mistake if Victor Orta’s comments are to be believed

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Leeds’ pre-season preparations continued with a 2-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers at the weekend, ending their tour of Australia which has been somewhat controversial.

Marcelo Bielsa initially didn’t travel whilst he also kept behind a number of his first-team stars after deciding upon a squad of 16 to travel to the other side of the world.

It’s been a strange pre-season for Leeds who are yet to do a great deal in the transfer market but have also let stalwart Pontus Jansson leave.

But with him departing, they could now be on the verge of making a critical mistake.

On the chalkboard

Last week Paul Bell hinted that financial fair play was behind the sale of Jansson, who departed the club after making 37 starts in the Championship last term.

However, comments now made by Director of Football Victor Orta suggests a replacement may not be brought in.

In an interview with Leeds Live, he had the following to say about their transfer activity:

“We had a plan at the start of pre-season in terms of ins and outs. Now, more or less, we are 90 per cent covered in the plan we have.”

These comments don’t bode particularly well for the Whites who appear to be more or less finished in the market.

In terms of their attack, they look well equipped having brought in Helder Costa but questions still lie defensively.

Leeds fans voiced their concerns with the defence after losing to Manchester United last week, berating Gaetano Berardi and demanding that new faces were brought in.

He only featured 15 times in the league last term so it’s questionable that he may now be trusted in defence for the entirety of the upcoming campaign.

Not replacing Jansson, who won a colossal 4.9 aerial duels and 2.4 tackles per game last term, would be a considerable error.

Leeds just missed out on promotion in 2018/19, but they could be even further behind the pack if they don’t sign a replacement to bolster their defensive ranks.
