Eficiente, América-MG derrota Internacional no Independência

North signs two-year Glamorgan deal

Marcus North, the Western Australia captain, will take his tally of English counties that he has represented to six after signing a two-year deal as Glamorgan’s overseas player

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Aug-2011Marcus North, the Western Australia captain, will take his tally of English counties that he has represented to six after signing a two-year deal as Glamorgan’s overseas player.North will bring with him more than 11,000 first-class runs and replaces Alviro Petersen, the South Africa opener, who has captained Glamorgan this season. He won’t be called away on international duty having lost his Test place during the 2010-11 Ashes series.”Glamorgan are in a similar position to WA in that they are chasing success after a period without any silverware and I am really keen to take up the challenge,” North said. “My 100% priority is to WA cricket. It always has been and that will never change. The decision to take up a county contract is not one I took lightly and I would not have committed to Glamorgan unless I knew it was going to be beneficial to my role within WA cricket.”At this point in my career I want to be playing as much cricket as I can,” he added. “I have had five previous stints in English county cricket but this will be a fresh start in Cardiff under Matthew Mott and it is very exciting.”North, who scored a century on his Test debut against South Africa, has previously had spells with Derbyshire, Durham, Gloucestershire, Hampshire and Lancashire.

Gambhir, Kallis set up thumping win

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsJacques Kallis provided the solidity, while Gautam Gambhir kept the scoring rate up•AFP

Kolkata Knight Riders won by nine wickets and with nine deliveries to spare. It shouldn’t have been that easy but Gautam Gambhir and Jacques Kallis starred in a supremely well-paced chase as Kolkata successfully hunted down a potentially tough 160-run target on a sluggish track in Jaipur. The first game-seizing moment of the chase came in the sixth over, bowled by Amit Singh. Kolkata were 44 for 1 from five overs and it was obvious that they had to fully utilise the new ball and the Powerplay on this slow track. It was an over that could have tilted the game either way: Amit tried to keep it tight, Gambhir took risks, two shots eluded palms of fielders in the off side but not by much, and Gambhir looted 18 runs. He flat-batted the first ball past the diving Ross Taylor at extra cover, slashed the third past the diving Abhishek Raut at point, glanced the fourth to fine-leg, and crashed the final delivery over mid-off.The second turning point was Gambhir’s contest with Shane Warne, who introduced himself in the seventh over. Gambhir cut his third delivery through the covers, and slog swept the first ball of the 10th over to collect another four. When Warne gave himself another over, to try and pick up a wicket, Gambhir sashayed down the track and scythed a flighted delivery through extra cover. By the end of that over, Kolkata only needed 58 runs from 48 balls and Gambhir and Kallis stayed till the end to achieve a comfortable win.Gambhir found great support in Kallis, who was instrumental in starting the chase in a positive fashion. He lifted Ashok Menaria’s left-arm spin for a four and a six over long-off in the third over, whipped Shane Watson to midwicket and slashed Nayan Doshi through backward point. He dropped anchor once Gambhir took over the baton.Rajasthan would probably wish they had played Shaun Tait to create wicket-taking opportunities but they had put up a pretty decent batting effort. Fuelled by calculated aggression from Rahul Dravid and Menaria, who seemed to be aiming for something around 160, Rajasthan reached 75 for 1 from 11 overs. It seemed at that stage that their job, especially Dravid’s, was done and it was time to hand the reins over to Shane Watson and Ross Taylor. In the 12th over, Yusuf Pathan had a double strike – Dravid didn’t connect with a slog and Menaria swatted a return catch, and the stage was set for the two big hitters. Rajasthan seized momentum by looting 14 runs in the 16th over with Taylor spanking a long hop and a full toss from L Balaji for sixes. There was a mini-contest too on show: Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh’s captain, who saw Watson wreck their side only few days back was entrusted with the task of bowling at him. Shakib himself had just given 26 runs from 20 deliveries to Watson on that day and so, it wasn’t going to be a one-sided contest. Watson heaved Shakib Al Hasan for a straight six in the 14th over and slog-swept him over wide midwicket for another six in the 17th over. Shakib slowed up the pace on the next delivery and Watson was bowled as he missed another attempted slog sweep. Rajasthan were 125 for 4 at that stage, and Taylor stayed till the end to guide them to a good total. But they were thwarted by a fabulous captain’s knock from Gambhir.

Weather ruins fourth Youth ODI

ScorecardThe weather played spoilsport as no result was possible in the fourth Youth ODI between Sri Lanka Under-19s and England Under-19s at the NCC Ground in Colombo. The match was reduced to a 20-over game after rain in the morning, and Sri Lanka managed to reach 150. Opener Shehan Jayasuriya raced to 60 off 43, and Sri Lanka built a solid base. They were pegged back in the end by some tight bowling and fielding from England. Only 20 runs came off the last 4.1 overs, with seven wickets falling. Fast bowler Matt Dunn took three late wickets and a total of four wickets fell in his last over – two of them run-outs.England’s chase had got off to a steady reply. They had only got 41 runs in 7.1 overs, but had lost a solitary wicket. Unfortunately the innings couldn’t be continued due to bad light and the match ended without a winner. Sri Lanka still lead the series 3-0 with the final match to be played at the Moors Sports Club Ground in Colombo on Saturday.

We expected India to bounce back – de Villiers

AB de Villiers offered no excuses for South Africa being bundled out for 131 in their first innings against India in Durban. “We batted extremely poorly. There were quite a few soft wickets, but they also bowled well,” he said at the end-of-day press conference. It was as simple as that for the South African number four, who fell to the best delivery Sreesanth bowled all day, a leg-cutter that had him edging to the keeper without scoring. Sreesanth, along with Ishant Sharma, were much better bowlers with the return of India spearhead Zaheer Khan, who made a noticeable impact. “He put us under pressure from the word go,” de Villiers said.de Villiers admitted that India were a more threatening attack than they were in Centurion, where they were unable to dismiss South Africa once. “Their lengths and lines were spot on. They bowled a bit wide to us so we had to leave a few more.” The Indian fight back may have been surprising to some, but de Villiers said that South Africa were bracing for some form of revival from the world’s top ranked Test side. “You expect the No. 1 team to bounce back after a poor performance. They caught us offside today.”Instead of blaming the Durban pitch, known for its bounce and swing, for a third team total in the 130s in three Tests for South Africa, de Villiers said the inept performance made the pitch look more dangerous that what it was. “18 wickets in the day is not a true reflection of how the wicket is playing. It’s playing better than that.” He felt that the batsmen simply needed to push on once they got starts. “When you get to 30 or 40 it gets easier. You get used to the pace, bounce and swing. You can set yourself a nice platform and do nicely.”The discomfort the batsmen felt was evident, however, as only Alviro Petersen and Hashim Amla managed more than 20 runs. With India batting again, VVS Laxman is primed to be the man who settles in and makes that big score. South Africa are aware that he has the ability to take the game away from them and urge the batsmen around him to do the same. “We’ve seen him play big knocks for India before under pressure,” de Villiers said. “He manages the player at the other end well, who is a youngster at the moment. He is definitely a danger man at the moment.”It’s capturing early wickets that South Africa are targeting to prevent Laxman from making himself too comfortable. de Villiers thinks that the bowlers continue to hold advantage as the match goes on, particularly the tweakers. “There’s always going to be something in it for the bowlers, even a little bit of spin Harris and Harbhajan both bowled well, getting a bit of bounce and turn. We’re just going to have to come out here and get a few early wickets and restrict them to 250, which is very chase-able.”We would like to chase something in between 240 and 260. After a very poor performance today, we’d like to come out and prove ourselves and play well again. Even if we have to chase 300, we’ll give it a good go.”

Celtic: Report shares Carter-Vickers news

Celtic are expected to complete the signing of Tottenham Hotspur central defender Cameron Carter-Vickers on a permanent basis, according to football.london’s Alasdair Gold.

The lowdown: Talks held

This comes following a report from SBI Soccer claiming that the Hoops had held advanced talks over the last week with Tottenham regarding the future of the 24-year-old.

Despite claims of interest from Wolves, Leicester City, and Watford, Celtic appear to remain in the hot seat to sign the USA international, with the American source detailing a £6m initial fee which could rise to £10m.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-4/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Now a fresh update has emerged from London, with the reliable Gold backing the American press…

The latest: Gold expects move

As per the report from football.london’s Tottenham Hotspur correspondent, Celtic are ‘expected to take up the option’ to buy the eight-cap ace.

It’s claimed that the Glasgow giants will indeed pay £6million up front.

Furthermore, the report states that the loan switch has been a ‘big success’ for the man recently hailed as ‘immense’ by Chris Sutton following a match-winning display against Rangers containing seven successful aerial duels, eight clearances and 31 accurate passes (Sofascore).

The verdict: No brainer

Given the levels of performance from Carter-Vickers this season, it would be regarded as a major oversight were Celtic to miss out on the capture – he has been hailed as ‘quick’ by Jonathan Woodgate, and has used that athleticism to take like a duck to water to life in the Scottish Premiership.

So far this term the Southend-born star has scored four times from 42 appearances across all competitions and was subsequently named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year this week.

Forging a healthy understanding alongside Carl Starfelt, the Bhoys have kept the most clean sheets in the Scottish Premiership this campaign with 18, a record that has taken Ange Postecoglou’s side to the brink of the title.

NUFC had a howler over Modric transfer miss

Newcastle United have seen many players join the Tyneside club over the years on permanent transfers or loan deals.

The previous January transfer window showed just how capable the Magpies and their new owners are when it comes to spending significant amounts of money to bring in new faces to try and strengthen their squad and push the team forward.

Taking a look back down the years, one figure that the club were supposedly pursuing on two different occasions that they will undoubtedly regret not buying is Luka Modric.

According to Planet Football, former Toon boss Kevin Keegan was eager to sign the midfielder back in 2008 when Modric was at Dinamo Zagreb. They also claimed that Sam Allardyce wanted to sign the Croatian a year prior during his tenure at St James’ Park.

The former Magpies and Everton manager said: “I was then on the way to getting Luka Modric from Dinamo Zagreb, but by then, Mike saw the scale of the full debut and put the clamps on, so I had to make do with Geremi from Chelsea.”

After scoring 22 goals and providing 21 assists in 73 appearances for Dinamo Zagreb, the midfielder did end up making a move to England, but it was Tottenham Hotspur who secured his signature in the summer of 2008 rather than Newcastle for a fee of around £20m.

Having played in 160 games for the Lilywhites across all competitions, finding the net 17 times and delivering 26 assists, the midfielder found himself on the move again, this time to his current club Real Madrid in 2012.

During his time in Spain, the 36-year-old has scored 31 goals and provided 69 assists in 427 appearances, winning four Champions League titles among many other trophies including numerous individual awards such as the Ballon d’Or and UEFA’s Best Player in Europe, both in 2018.

Labelled an “extraordinary” player by Carlo Ancelotti and a “mental monster” by journalist Dermot Corrigan, Modric has been sold for a combined total of just over £51m throughout his time in football according to Transfermarkt and racked up 186 goals and assists throughout what has been a shining career.

Taking all this into account, it’s safe to say that Keegan and Allardyce both had howlers over not convincing the hierarchy at Newcastle to launch a substantial move for the midfield maestro when they were pursuing him before his move to Spurs.

Tired Bollinger and Hussey join Australia squad

Doug Bollinger insists he and Michael Hussey will be prepared for the first Test against India starting on Friday, despite having only just joined the squad

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Sep-2010Doug Bollinger insists he and Michael Hussey will be prepared for the first Test against India starting on Friday, despite having only just joined the squad. The pair flew in to Chandigarh on Tuesday, having helped Chennai Super Kings to a Champions League triumph on Sunday in Johannesburg.Their Australian team-mates have adjusted to the conditions with a warm-up game but Bollinger and Hussey have only two days of net sessions to get themselves up to speed. However, India are in a similar situation, with MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and M Vijay also having made the last-minute dash to Chandigarh from South Africa.”We’ll be right to go, we’ve got a good couple of days of training coming up and we’ll look after ourselves and we’ll be fine,” Bollinger told AAP. “We’re a little bit tired, it’s been a long flight, but we’re good and we’ll just chill out for a couple of days and make sure we’re right to go.”Australia’s vice-captain Michael Clarke spoke of players putting their country before other competitions, but said it was a positive that the two men had been playing tough cricket in South Africa. Hussey is a well-travelled cricketer and he believes it is possible for him and Bollinger to be in good shape for the Test.”It’s not ideal, but it’s the best we can do, we’ll just make sure we’re really smart the next couple of days and get ourselves prepared as best we can,” Hussey said. “I’m sure we’ve got good background staff and they’ll get us in the best possible shape to get going for Friday.”We’ve been playing cricket and training every other day, so it’s not like we’re coming in underdone or anything like that, we’ve got plenty of cricket behind us, obviously it’s a totally different format but it’s a mental adjustment as much as anything. The next couple of days we’ve got to get the head right and get thinking more Test match cricket.”Bollinger is likely to form part of a three-man pace attack with Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus for the first Test. Hussey will slot back into the No. 5 position he occupied during the Test series against Pakistan in July, when Clarke was promoted to No. 4.
