Leeds backed to sign Todd Cantwell

Leeds United remain interested in signing long-term transfer target and Norwich City midfielder Todd Cantwell, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Cantwell linked with Leeds move

The 23-year-old has been an impressive performer at Carrow Road over a number of years, although he has been limited to just five Premier League starts so far this season.

Cantwell has been linked with a move to Leeds and could be available in the January transfer window, with the Canaries seemingly willing to sell him.

The midfielder’s contract expires this summer with the option for it to be extended by a year, but Norwich could jump at the chance to receive a fee now.

The Latest: O’Rourke on Leeds’ Cantwell interest

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke talked up the idea of the prospective move happening, adding that Cantwell has been a target for Leeds for some time.

He stated: “Todd Cantwell’s an interesting one. Leeds were very keen on him last summer and maybe the window before that as well, he is someone who’s been on their radar for a long time.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-30/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Exciting long-term option

The Whites are badly in need of squad depth, particularly in midfield, with Kalvin Phillips still out injured for a while and Adam Forshaw needing to be monitored carefully after such a long absence.

Cantwell is someone who could add a huge amount of guile in the middle of the park, having been hailed as ‘incredible’ by ex-Norwich striker Dean Ashton in the past. At 23, he is also someone who should only improve in the coming years, while also having the experience of 45 Premier League games behind him.

His tally of 14 goals and 12 assists in 110 appearances for Norwich shows that he could add creativity in Leeds’ midfield, providing the attack with more ammunition moving forward. It’s just what Marcelo Bielsa might need, considering that his side are among the top-flight’s lowest scorers this term.

Bowlers deliver big Lancashire win

Lancashire thrashed Essex by eight wickets at Chelmsford to record their second County Championship win of the season

ScorecardGlen Chapple removed Alastair Cook and the remaining batsmen folded to give Lancashire a three-day win•PA PhotosLancashire thrashed Essex by eight wickets at Chelmsford to record their second County Championship win of the season. The match finished with more than four sessions to spare as Essex were bowled out for 173 in their second innings, leaving their opponents requiring just 38 to win. Sajid Mahmood and James Anderson each picked up three wickets but it was captain Glen Chapple who claimed the most important scalp of the day.Resuming at 46 for 2 and still 90 behind, Essex desperately needed a long and productive innings from Alastair Cook if they were going to make a real fight of it. For nearly an hour Cook and Jaik Mickleburgh kept Lancashire at bay while completing a half-century partnership. Soon after that landmark was reached, England opener Cook unleashed a superb cover drive off Chapple to complete his 50, an effort containing eight boundaries. But Cook’s downfall came in the same over when he touched an outswinger behind to wicketkeeper Luke Sutton. With Cook back in the pavilion, it was just a matter of time before the Lancashire bowlers worked their way through the remainder of the innings.Mahmood then appeared on the scene and the fast bowler struck with his third delivery to end the resistance of Mickleburgh, who was caught down the leg side by Sutton for 22. And in a spell of eight deliveries just before the lunch interval, Essex’s hopes of avoiding a heavy defeat disappeared with the loss of three wickets.James Foster was caught behind to provide Tom Smith with his solitary success, while Ryan ten Doeschate and Tim Phillips were both dismissed for ducks in the next over from Mahmood.Mark Pettini’s resistance ended when he was bowled by Anderson but at least the tail provided a brief and entertaining flourish before left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan brought the innings to an end by having Chris Wright stumped. That gave Sutton his fifth success of the innings, just reward for a highly competent performance during which he did not concede a bye. Anderson emerged with figures of three for 53 for a match return of nine for 97 and Chapple’s five wickets in the match took his career first-class total for Lancashire to 699.Left with their modest target, Lancashire lost Smith to Maurice Chambers with only three runs on the board while Stephen Moore also departed, this time falling to left-arm spinner Phillips, before the winning post was reached. Lancashire collected 22 points while Essex had to settle for just three.

Man City fans praise Cancelo v Newcastle

Joāo Cancelo produced a man of the match display as Manchester City destroyed Newcastle United 4-0 at St James’ Park on Sunday.

City secured the Christmas number one spot as two goals in each half pushed Pep Guardiola’s men three points clear at the top of the Premier League table. This was City’s 34th league victory in 2021, a new Premier League record, adding another achievement to the club’s impressive recent history.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-latest-updates-2/” title=”Man City latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Cancelo put on an incredible display on Tyneside, producing a goal and an assist, which saw him receive an 8.5 SofaScore rating. The Portuguese full-back has been in electric form this season, having averaged the highest rating (7.46) out of any City player in the Premier League during the current campaign.

However, it wasn’t just this emphatic performance which made the occasion special, as Cancelo was playing his 100th game for the club since arriving at the Etihad Stadium from Juventus for a fee of £58.5m in the summer of 2019.

These Man City fans praise Cancelo’s performance

Manchester City’s official Twitter channel posted a video of Cancelo scoring an incredible goal in the 4-0 romp against Newcastle. Captioning the clip: ‘marking his 100th City appearance in style’, plenty of fans flocked to the comments to sing the defender’s praises following his landmark appearance.

Here’s what these City fans said, with one even touting the “unstoppable” 27-year-old as a potential Ballon D’Or candidate on current form – he current has the fourth-highest rating in the 2021/22 Premier League as per WhoScored metrics:

Aston Villa: Fans react to Kerr Smith update

Aston Villa look set to pip the likes of Chelsea and Everton by winning the race for Dundee United defender Kerr Smith.

That’s according to The Daily Record’s Scott Burns, with a number of Villa fans reacting to the news on social media.

Villa have lost a centre-back this month with Axel Tuanzebe cutting his season-long loan short in order to join Napoli but appear to be closing in on Everton left-back Lucas Digne.

That leaves Steven Gerrard with Kortney Hause, Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings as senior options, but it appears as if they will bolster their academy ranks with the acquisition of Smith.

Burns has revealed that Johan Lange has struck an agreement with Dundee United for the 17-year-old centre-back in a deal that could rise to £2m.

Smith is now set to travel to the Midlands to undergo a medical and finalise a ‘dream move’, with Villa pipping the likes of Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Everton and Southampton.

The youngster will initially integrate with Villa’s Under-23 side, despite making 12 senior appearances for Dundee United.

Wolves almost signed Sanches, says Spiers

Wolves came within inches of signing Lille midfielder Renato Sanches in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Tim Spiers.

The Lowdown: Sanches constantly linked with move

Bruno Lage was linked with bringing in a host of players during the summer, but few were tipped to move to Molineux more often than Sanches.

The 32-time capped Portugal international ended up staying put at Lille for the time being, but he has only started five Ligue 1 games so far this season.

It appears as though Wolves came closer to snapping up Sanches than some may have realised, however.

The Latest: Spiers makes big claim

During a Q&A for The Athletic on Thursday [via Molineux.news], Spiers claimed that the 24-year-old could easily be a Wanderers player but his injury record held him back, also not ruling out a deal happening in the future:

“(I) was told a couple of weeks ago that with Sanches they were as close as you could be to signing a player without it actually happening.

“And that if they’d known how quickly he would have returned to action (early October) they probably would have gone through with signing him.

“Ultimately it came down to his injury and a fear that he could have been out until late October/early November, plus the games he’d then have taken to get up to speed, meaning you might not have him properly match sharp until, what, now kind of time? And then you’re paying his wages in full, plus a hefty loan fee.

“So it was considered too big a risk. And this is a player who’s never completed more than 60 per cent of a season before. Very injury prone. We’ll see what happens going forward but he’s not going to be short of offers. I hope they can resurrect it because a fit Renato Sanches would bring such a different dynamic to this team.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“375704”]

The Verdict: Still a chance?

It is a shame to lose out on a player as gifted as Sanches – he won the prestigious European Golden Boy award in 2016 and has been hailed as ‘incredible’ by Kevin Campbell – but all hope may not be lost.

The midfielder’s lack of playing time for Lille could suggest he may move on in January or next summer, at which point Wolves may choose to swoop.

Granted, Sanches has had an injury-plagued career but he could bring something different in the middle of the park, having averaged two dribbles per game and a 91.6% pass completion rate at Euro 2020 with Portugal.

In comparison, Ruben Neves (0.5) and Joao Moutinho (0.3) have averaged far fewer dribbles in the league this season, suggesting that Sanches could complement their more measured style nicely.

Spurs offered chance to sign Mauro Icardi

As per Foot Mercato, Tottenham Hotspur, and by extension Antonio Conte, have been offered the chance to sign Paris-Saint Germain striker Mauro Icardi.

The Lowdown: Icardi wanted at Spurs…

This isn’t the first time Spurs have been linked with the Argentine amid Fabio Paratici’s search for a centre-forward alternative to Harry Kane.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Even before Conte’s arrival at the club, Tottenham’s transfer chief had supposedly rejoined the race to sign Icardi after chairman Daniel Levy made an offer to sign from Inter Milan in 2016.

The 28-year-old has cut a frustrated figure at the Parc des Princes under former Lilywhites manager Mauricio Pochettino, starting a handful of games over 2021/22. As a result, it is believed that Icardi wants to move away from PSG due to becoming a ‘luxury’ stand-in for the club’s starting trio of Neymar, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe (Foot Mercato).

The Latest: Spurs offered chance…

As per another update by the French source, Icardi’s entourage have now offered Spurs, as well as Newcastle, Barcelona and Juventus, the chance to sign the Argentina striker.

They describe the subject of his future as PSG’s ‘biggest issue’ in the January transfer window, and while a return to Italy is more plausible, they hint that Tottenham or a move to the Premier League shouldn’t be ruled out entirely.

The Verdict: Ideal Vlahovic alternative…

Icardi comes as an ideal alternative to Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic if Tottenham can’t get a deal done for the Serbian.

The PSG forward, who earns a reported £165,000 per week, has been described as ‘world-class’ by Italy defender Georgio Chiellini, while his goal record speaks for itself.

Racking up a 171-goal senior career total, the player is certainly adept at finding the target despite his recent lack of minutes, and he would certainly provide some serious competition for Kane in N17.

Newcastle handed fresh injury boost

Newcastle United are still without a win in the Premier League this season after drawing 1-1 against Norwich City in midweek at St James’ Park.

Their next attempt at securing a win comes today with another home clash against Burnley.

In terms of which players could be available for selection this afternoon, the Magpies have been handed some positive news which will have a lot of Toon fans buzzing and perhaps confident of a win here.

What’s the news?

Speaking ahead of the match against Sean Dyche’s side, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said that from an injury point of view after the draw against Norwich, his side have “a few bumps and bruises but hopefully nothing too serious,” which suggests that he could have close to a full squad at his disposal today.

With Newcastle having scored two more goals than Burnley so far this season, Howe and everyone at the Tyneside club will undoubtedly be hoping that their attacking players will be in good form to help secure their first win of the season and fully kickstart their chances of avoiding relegation by the end of the campaign.

However, with the Toon having conceded 10 more goals than today’s visitors, it could prove to be a difficult match for them against the Clarets, even though Burnley are just three points above the Magpies.

Looking beyond today’s game, with Newcastle having Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United in their next four league fixtures, it would seem hard to pinpoint where they would be likely to pick up a win if they don’t get one against Burnley, which surely puts even more pressure on them to do the business today.

In their past five league games against the Clarets at St. James’ Park, Newcastle have only won two, including a 3-1 victory when the teams last met on Tyneside 14 months ago.

With no apparent serious injury issues to worry about from their midweek match against Norwich, Toon fans can at least rest easy that Howe has a near full-strength squad to call upon for today’s crunch fixture.

Saints slam Elyounoussi

Taking to Twitter, many Southampton fans criticised the performance of winger Mohamed Elyounoussi against Norwich City at Carrow Road today.

Looking to climb from the mid-table places after a solid run of form, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men took on the Canaries for Dean Smith’s first game in charge. Indeed, all eyes were on the 50-year-old, who arrived at Norwich after being sacked from Villa, with the Saints hoping to make his first game at the helm a losing one.

Che Adams couldn’t have got the Saints off to a better start, opening the scoring with a neat bottom-corner finish after wriggling his way through Norwich’s backline. However, some poor goalkeeping from Alex McCarthy granted the home side a leveller just three minutes later as Teemu Pukki scored at the back post.

Then, with 10 minutes remaining, Norwich came back to take the lead courtesy of defender Grant Hanley – who rose highest at the back post to nod in the winner from a corner. It turned out to be the winning goal at Carrow Road as the Canaries made it two wins in a row.

Saints slam Elyounoussi…

As the Saints come away from the east coast with nothing, one man who was slated by some of their fans was Elyounoussi, due to his lack of impact going forward.

The 27-year-old, taking among the fewest touches out of any Southampton player according to SofaScore, also didn’t register one cross into the box or shot on target, prompting Hasenhuttl to replace him with Armando Broja midway through the second period.

Here’s what these Saints supporters made of his performance as they took to social media, with one fan calling him the team’s ‘weak link’:

“#SaintsFC need Ted Lasso to teach these boys to make the extra pass. If he can teach Jamie Tartt, he can teach Mo Elyounoussi.”

“Imo, Diallo shouldn’t be playing where he is. He’s a good player but he’s not got that attacking intelligence that you need to play further forward. Elyonoussi has been poor and wasteful as well. If I’m Tella watching this, I’m not sure what I need to, to get into the squad.”
