Hard long road ahead to World Cup

Shaun Pollock, Eric Simons and Omar Henry will have 36 long hours, as they travel home, to contemplate on the good and bad after losing the final of the Morocco Cup against Sri Lanka. By the time they reach South Africa on Saturday morning they should have a good idea as to where to go from here.Granted, the conditions did not suit the South Africans. Granted, they came out of an off season. Granted, they lost the toss in the final. All arguments we heard prior to and during the tournament. Was it all really so bad? Maybe not, but there are areas of concern..Pollock must be very worried about his current form. Having played cricket in England he only took two wickets in the tournament at an average of 90.00 and a strike rate of 132. His economy rate was the best of all the South African bowlers but is he the prime candidate to open the bowling? With the bat he scored 41 runs at an average of 13.66. During his last 10 matches he has only taken seven wickets at an average of 59.28 and in his last 10 one-day international innings scored a total of 75 runs at an average of 12.5. Pollock is far to good a cricket to stay in this kind of form and will be back.Roger Telemachus was as effective as the chewing gum that he tossed at Marvin Atapattu. Three wickets at 48.66 at an economy rate of 7.30 makes one wonder about the bowling depth in South African cricket.Makhaya Ntini, after a successful Australian campaign showed a lot of early season rust. Not taking any wickets at an economy rate of 6.53 and still unable to bowl the slower ball. After 48 one-day internationals this inability has to be worked on or he is going to find himself the target of opposition batsmen. In the batting department we faired even worse. Gary Kirsten keeps on dragging the ball back into the stumps. He only scored 58 runs at 19.33. Herschelle Gibbs had the privilege of scoring the first and only hundred of the tournament. A brilliant innings of 114 scored with patience and aggression must rate as one of his better knocks. This innings was overshadowed by his technique in the remaining matches. He continues to chase the wide one outside the off. He ended with 132 runs at an average of 26.4.Jonty Rhodes will be very disappointed with his batting. One of the best sweepers in the game he struggled to get the sweep working and he will not be pleased with getting run out twice. His fielding however is as good as ever. Rhodes scored 80 runs at 20.0.Coach Eric Simmons identified South Africa’s batting as the major problem area. “The batsmen didn’t adapt well to the conditions, making the same mistakes over and again, but there were lots of positives and we can learn from the experience and move forward.”Positives, yes there were. The most important being the team spirit. Many sides would have crumbled during the final stages of the last match against Pakistan but the South African determination was once again evident. Even though they lost, it was also there for the final. So different from six months back.Allan Donald was to many the South African player of the tournament. Bowling with the control of old, he proved that he has lost none of his guile. Experience plays a major role in cricket and he showed, in taking 10 wickets at 15.2, that even in losing pace he is still one of the best attack bowlers in the game. Hopefully Donald will be looked after to make sure he stays fit for the coming season and the World Cup.Lance Klusener too was an inspiration. Nine wickets at 18.8 and an economy rate of 4.11 has once again proved what a good all-rounder he is. Not given the luxury, during the tournament, of a platform to launch his attacks from, showed a new side of Klusener batting with patience and confidence scoring 123 runs at an average of 61.5.Mark Boucher (139 runs at 34.75) and Boeta Dippenaar (138 runs at 34.50) can also be well pleased with their early season form, both coming very close to taking the team to victory in the final. They also had to come to the crease under tremendous pressure and passed the test with flying colours.Jacques Kallis, after showing so much early season form, will only just be happy with his tournament. At times he showed signs of an in form Kallis ending up with the most runs for South Africa, scoring 141 at a disappointing average of 28.20. He did however get bowled by one of the balls of the tournament when Waqar Younis found a gap between bat and pad. On an unfriendly pitch he also took five wickets at 29.6.Various batting experiments were evident during the tournament and one that again proved to be the best is using Nicky Boje at the top of the order as the pinch hitter. In his career Boje has scored two hundreds and three fifties batting at either number three or four, scoring more than half his career runs at these positions and averaging 44.7. His overall average is 27.6.With a long season ahead of them the South Africans have a lot of work to get through. Some of the problem areas are small and will be fine tuned while players on the fringes will be encouraged to work hard and fill the gaps that are becoming more evident.

Jumbos foiled by the rain, SBC semi to be played on Monday

Rain which began falling shortly before lunch caused KwaZulu-Natal’s Standard Bank Cup semifinal playoff against Eastern Province on Sunday to be abandoned as a washout

Peter Robinson18-Feb-2001Rain which began falling shortly before lunch caused KwaZulu-Natal’s Standard Bank Cup semifinal playoff against Eastern Province on Sunday to be abandoned as a washout. At that stage the Jumbos had made 253 for two after 41.2 overs, but this powerful position was undermined by the weather and the two teams will return to Kingsmead on Monday to start a new match. With more rain forecast, however, the future of this tie was shrouded in confusion. The regulations governing the competition do not cover the eventuality of a complete washout but it seems that if no play is possible on Monday then the game will be played on Tuesday. And if a result is still not possible, then it appears as if Natal will qualify for Wednesday’s final against the Northerns Titans by virtue of finishing the league section at the top of the table, and therefore higher than EP.If EP lose Monday’s replay they will have good reason to feel aggrieved. With Robin Peterson’s 94 the highlight of the innings, the visiting side had punished the home attack throughout the morning until the rain began to fall.Peterson, a makeshift opener, added 112 for the second wicket with James Bryant and after his departure Justin Kemp came in to put on 98 in an unbroken partnership for the third wicket with Bryant. When the innings closed, Bryant was not out on 77 while Kemp’s 57 had come off 47 balls including three fours and three sixes. But Peterson’s innings was by some distance the highlight of the day’s play, a glorious onslaught to which Natal had very little answer. His runs came off only 73 balls and he hit five sixes and five fours along the way as the home side wilted. It was a particularly poor day for Natal captain Dale Benkenstein who, on winning the toss, first said he would bat before correcting himself and announcing that he wished to field. The Natal fielding was sloppy and, for reasons known only to Benkenstein, Lance Klusener was given three overs of offspin which were promptly hammered for 28. Klusener also got himself into trouble with umpire Dave Orchard on more than one occasion for bowling off a two-step runup before the batsman was ready to receive the ball. There is no doubt that the Jumbos have been hard done by by the weather, but for the moment they will simply have to hope that the rain will hold off for long enough on Monday or Tuesday for them to either win or lose the tie on the field rather than by an ad hoc interpretation of the playing conditions made by a UCB official.

Newcastle must land Netherlands’ Wout Weghorst

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce must land VfL Wolfsburg and Netherlands striker Wout Weghorst amid The Athletic’s fresh transfer update.

What’s the story?

In an article from their EUROs build-up ,The Athletic have written that Newcastle were one of the clubs interested in the Dutchamn last season, and added: “Weghorst might not be the forward who will kick off half a dozen transfers of top centre-forwards this season, but somewhere along the line, there’s a good chance he’ll be one of the benefactors if the dominos start falling.

“The 28-year-old had already attracted plenty of suitors 12 months ago following a fine season for Wolfsburg (20 goals in 43 games), when Tottenham and Newcastle made preliminary advances among others. The German club are expecting more concrete offers this summer.

“Wolfsburg have qualified for the Champions League, in no small part thanks to the 28-year-old’s 20 league goals in 2020-21 but that won’t mean the Dutch striker will necessarily stay. There’s an understanding that he will be allowed to leave if certain conditions are met — about 30 million certain conditions, to be exact.”

Perfect for the Premier League

German publication BILD claimed last summer that the Magpies wanted to sign the Dutchman during the transfer window, with fellow Premier League side Arsenal also said to be interested.

And while a deal failed to materialise, this latest update should have Bruce all over it this time around.

In the 6 foot 6 Weghorst, Newcastle could land someone most similar to Alan Shearer. Aside from his ridiculous physical gifts and advantage in the air – he won 2.8 aerial duels per game in the Bundesliga last season – the Dutchman has some pretty nifty footwork, and also has the vision to bring his teammates into play.

As per Whoscored, the 28-year-old averaged an impressive 1.3 key passes per match in the German top-flight, picking up eight assists in total.

And like Shearer, Weghorst works his socks off for his team playing in that central striker role. His fellow Wolfsburg ace, Admir Mehmedi, said: “He runs a lot for the team and has a really strong mentality. I can’t think of another player who is so crazy, in a positive way!”

Weghorst has even been likened to Jamie Vardy by  The Athletic’s Bundesliga expert Raphael Honigstein, in terms of his relentless work rate in leading the line on his own.

He said: “(Weghorst is) Holland’s taller, chunkier answer to Jamie Vardy — minus the bit with the electronic tag and the Skittles-flavoured vodka — still plays like he’s got a point to prove in every match. He flies into tackles, wins more headers than almost anyone and frequently tops his team’s charts for most distance covered.”

That work-rate is echoed by former head coach, Bruno Labbadia, who said: “(Wout) runs a lot, he’s tireless.”

The £27m-rated striker’s physicality and intensity makes him the perfect fit for the hustle and bustle of the Premier League, and could add some real firepower to Bruce’s side at St James’ Park.

Meanwhile, Steve Bruce is eyeing a move for this 6 ft 4 powerhouse…

De Bruyne provides injury update

Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne has provided an update on the injury he suffered in the Champions League final, which will surely delight Pep Guardiola and Citizens fans.

The Belgium international was forced off against Chelsea after a collision with Antonio Rudiger, which meant that a City comeback was always going to be tough.

After he was seen crying and unable to stand, City fans will have been rightfully concerned about the former Wolfsburg man and whether he would be fit for the start of next season, but his recent update on Twitter should allay any fears about him being out for the long term.

He wrote:

“Hi guys just got back from the hospital. My diagnosis is Acute nose bone fracture and left orbital fracture. I feel okay now. Still disappointed about yesterday obviously but we will be back.”

Although it is still uncertain whether or not he will be fit to feature for Belgium at the Euros this summer, players can often play on with facial injuries by wearing masks, and hopefully, the fractures will have healed by the time the Premier League 2021/22 campaign kicks off in August.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

The “exceptional” midfielder was a mainstay in City’s side this season and was a key reason behind their success in the Premier League and the Carabao Cup, so it was extremely unfortunate that he was unable to play a more telling role in City’s first-ever Champions League final last weekend.

His performances in the Premier League this season saw him average a superb 7.65 rating from WhoScored, which was the second-best of any player in the league, which emphasises just how important he was in City’s title win, and if he can maintain that form next year, then Guardiola’s side have an excellent chance of retaining their title.

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936″]

City will certainly be challenging for trophies again next season and from the sound of things, De Bruyne should be fit enough to get the Citizens off to a good start when they return to action next season and that in itself is news that should delight City fans.

Alioski has already sealed Galatasaray move

Ezgjan Alioski has reportedly already agreed to join Galatasaray, but wants to wait until the end of the season for the deal to be announced.

The Lowdown: Alioski out of contract

The 29-year-old has been a good servant for the Whites, making 167 appearances and chipping in with 22 goals and 17 assists along the way.

Alioski is out of contract in the summer, however, and there has been almost no talk of him signing a new deal at Elland Road.

A move away has appeared to be a certainty, with a past report claiming that Galatasaray would snap him up once the season reaches its conclusion.

The Latest: Galatasaray move already sealed

That still appears to be the case, with Fotomac [via Sport Witness] stating that a deal has been agreed, but that it won’t be announced just yet.

Alioski has asked Galatasaray to remain quiet for the time being, fearing that Leeds supporters will react negatively to the news, considering he is still currently a Whites player.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Time for Alioski to leave

Now is the right time for Alioski to enjoy a fresh challenge, with his seemingly imminent move to Turkey good for all parties.

At 29, he might not get any better as a player, so offering him a new deal makes little sense, especially as his performances have been erratic at times this season, leading to some criticism.

Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico continues to be linked with a move, and while he is a similar age to Alioski, he could represent a more reliable option, possessing World Cup experience with Argentina, making four appearances in the 2018 tournament, as well as Champions League showings with Ajax.

In other news, Leeds are believed to be eyeing up a move for a winger this summer. Find out who it is here.

Ryan Kent discusses transfer interest

Glasgow Rangers winger Ryan Kent has said that it is “nice” to be linked to other clubs, but he is currently only focused on the Gers.

Kent discusses transfer interest

Kent has been heavily linked with a move to Leeds since last year, when the Whites had a £10m bid rejected for him (RTE).

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Rangers’ Old Firm clash at the weekend, Kent revealed that he has enjoyed being linked to big clubs, but insisted that at the moment he is only concentrating on the 55-time Scottish champions. He said:

“It’s just about playing in the now.

“It’s nice to be linked with other big clubs, but you’ve got to understand your duty to where you are.

“As long as I’m at Rangers, I’ll give 100 per cent to the club.

“I love this place, it’s done so much for me, so as long as I’m here, my mind is solely focused on Rangers.”

Speculation to continue

Given his performances over this campaign, the speculation is unlikely to go away. So far this term, he has managed 12 goals and 13 assists (Transfermarkt), with his displays helping the Gers to get their hands on the Premiership title – he has played a big role in that success.

As such, that will likely only lead to more interest from other clubs – Leeds are said to be in pursuit once more (The Scottish Sun). The prospect of a Champions League run may convince the £7.2m-valued former Liverpool man (Transfermarkt) to stay put for now, but in the long run it seems likely he will return south of the border. Steven Gerrard and co should enjoy him while they can.

In other news, Ally McCoist has slammed comments from this man.
