Australia's front-loading puts Pakistan in danger on wearing surface

Alex Carey, who made 93, suggested that footmarks and reverse could play an increasing role on days four and five

Danyal Rasool13-Mar-2022It was the 131st over of the innings, the 41st of the day. Sajid Khan had bowled a tight couple of overs to Cameron Green, but it was really the left-hander Sajid was brought into the side to target. Never mind that Pakistan would have preferred this menace to make itself apparent in the 31st rather than the 131st over, and that the left-hander in question, Usman Khawaja, weren’t batting on 160, having faced 367 balls and spent over nine hours in the searing dry Karachi heat. But Sajid found some grip and turn, and Khawaja played inside the line. The second ball, there was drift in and spin out as the Australian opener found himself beaten all ends up, the ball fizzing past the outside edge and kissing off stump. Sajid allowed himself an extravagant celebration and the crowd, beaten down by the afternoon sun and an anodyne first session, roared into life. It was Pakistan’s finest moment all day.It may also be one that keeps them up at night. There might have been some consternation at Australia’s approach to the game post-tea, when, instead of pushing for quick runs and a crack at Pakistan in the setting sun, Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc decided instead to slow things down, almost to a grinding halt. They scored just 20 runs in the first 12 overs post-tea, with the spinners operating almost exclusively by now. Starc ended the day batting on 28 off 95 balls, his strike rate the lowest he’s ever managed in an innings of 20 or more. And while the spectators, and perhaps even Pakistan, waited expectantly for the declaration, Pat Cummins was nowhere to be seen. Australia kept batting, and, under the blistering Karachi sun, Pakistan kept bowling.Perhaps the tedium was the point on a pitch that was fairly slow, and against a Pakistan attack that was beginning to look enervated. Hasan Ali, who has only just returned from an adductor injury that kept him out of the first Test, saw his workload managed from time to time across both days, forcing Babar Azam to turn to Shaheen Shah Afridi for 30 overs in this innings. Sajid and Nauman Ali’s workloads were even more onerous, the pair combining to send down 99 of the 180 overs sent down so far. Only once in Asia have Australia ever batted for longer.Pakistan were being ground down slowly, every extra over a body blow. With the pitch increasingly showing signs that it will deteriorate in the coming days, Australia appeared to understand that there was no better time to bat than now, front-loading the runs before potentially having two full swings at Pakistan.’The more runs we can get in this first innings, it sets us up for the back end’ – Alex Carey•AFP/Getty ImagesCarey, who fell seven short of a hundred, made that point at the end of the day’s play. “We were clear [about our plans] going into last night. The captain basically said to the batters to get your head around batting all day unless the message comes otherwise. Starcy and I were just batting along, it’s not the easiest wicket to score quickly on.”I know that might sound interesting, but it’s starting to be a little bit variable, inconsistent, there was reverse-swing at times throughout the day. The offspinner [Sajid], he bowls a lot of balls in a good area and with not a lot of pace on them. The more runs we can get in this first innings, it sets us up for the back end. But think the wicket is starting to show a little bit of life now, or the opposite, it’s inconsistent, some patches are starting to open up a little. Think the game will move quicker going into the back end of tomorrow and day four and day five.”The temptation to view this Test as something of an extension of Rawalpindi as far as the pitch is concerned is a dangerous one to succumb to. Pakistan might have spent much of day two waiting for their turn to bat and expecting that they might be able to match the longevity of Australia’s innings, but there was enough evidence to suggest this surface might gradually become less docile. The spin has become less predictable and more extravagant, and Hasan, when he bowled with the old ball, found reverse-swing that should perk Starc up when he has ball in hand. In batting all day, the visitors displayed a clarity of thought and planning not always apparent in their recent trips to Asia, where they have won just three Tests and lost 17 in the last 15 years.”Reverse-swing is always difficult,” Carey said. “Coming over from Australia we probably don’t experience those conditions a lot but obviously the home team will have. That’s the beauty of having Mitchell Starc in our side, 145 clicks with reverse-swing is going to be difficult. Pat Cummins is the same, and also Greeny. We’ve got some weapons there when the ball starts to reverse.”[We’re] super excited to see the two spinners, Nathan [Lyon] hits a beautiful area regularly, there’s footmarks there. They aren’t huge at the moment, but our quicks will open those up a little more with the way they hit the crease and where they land on the wicket. For Mitchell Swepson, there’s enough there from the end he’ll bowl at, there’s some cracks opening. It’s going to be difficult.”Carey’s introduction to Karachi, immortalised on camera, was a tumble into a swimming pool. But over the last two days, he and his side have taken to the city’s cricket stadium like ducks to water.

Has anyone averaged more than Muttiah Muralitharan's six wickets per Test?

Also: does Mushfiqur Rahim have the lowest Test average of anyone who has scored three double-hundreds?

Steven Lynch03-Mar-2020Sri Lanka scored 345 in a recent one-day international, without anyone hitting a six – was this a record? asked Daniel Stockill from South Africa
Sri Lanka amassed 345 for 8 against West Indies in Hambantota last week without the aid of an individual six. That did break the previous record, which was England’s 333 for 6 against Australia in Sydney in 2010-11. There have been four other ODI totals of 300-plus without an individual six, one each by South Africa (321 for 8 v Pakistan in Nairobi in 1996-97), India (309 for 5 v Australia in Kochi in 1997-98), Sri Lanka (307 for 6 v India in Colombo in 2009) and Pakistan (302 for 9 v India in Centurion in 2009-10).The highest total without a six in T20Is is Australia’s 164 for 6 against India in Sydney in 2018-19. That was equalled in July 2019 by Jersey, with 164 for 3 against Guernsey in Castel.I spotted that Muttiah Muralitharan averaged more than six wickets per Test. Is this a record? asked Amitha Fernando from Sri Lanka
Muttiah Muralitharan took exactly 800 wickets in his 133 Tests, an average of 6.01 per match. Given a minimum of 50 wickets, that’s a modern-day record, although it is exceeded by four bowlers who played before the First World War. Best of all is England’s SF Barnes, whose 189 wickets came in just 27 matches, at an average of exactly seven per Test. The 19th-century trio of Jack Ferris (6.77 wickets per Test), Tom Richardson (6.28) and George Lohmann (6.22) are the others who shade Murali.Leading the way for current bowlers is Yasir Shah, who has so far taken 213 wickets in 39 Tests, an average of 5.46 per match, which puts him tenth overall. R Ashwin is 15th, with 5.14 wickets per Test (he had 365 from 71 matches after the first Test in New Zealand). How many people have scored a hundred and a fifty in their debut Test? asked Jamie Morton from England
Thirteen men have started their Test careers with a hundred and a half-century in the same game, the first being KS Ranjitsinhji, who made 62 and 154 not out for England against Australia at Old Trafford in 1896.The list also includes the unfortunate Rodney Redmond, who made 107 and 56 in his only Test, for New Zealand against Pakistan in Auckland in 1972-73. Pakistan’s Azhar Mahmood, with 128 and 50, both not out, against South Africa in Rawalpindi in 1997-98, is the only one to do it without being dismissed. The most recent batsman to start his Test career this way was Faf du Plessis, with 78 and 110 not out for South Africa against Australia in Adelaide in 2012-13.Mushfiqur Rahim’s average of 36.77 is the lowest of anyone with three scores of 200 and above in Tests•AFPTamil Nadu won a T20 game earlier this season with 15.5 overs to spare. Is this the most in any T20 match? asked Ram Prakash Mehta from India
Tamil Nadu needed only 4.1 overs to surpass Manipur’s 55 all out in their Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match in Thiruvananthapuram last November, winning with 95 balls to spare. The same day, in Surat, Gujarat bowled Sikkim out for 55 and won with 94 balls to spare. But the overall list is headed by two official T20Is from last year’s Romania Cup. Austria beat Turkey with 104 balls to spare after bowling them out for 32 in Ilfov County, two days after Luxembourg skittled them for 28 (also in Ilfov) and won with 101 deliveries in hand. In the Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2009-10, Jharkhand beat Tripura (30 all out) with 100 balls to spare in Dhanbad, while in Kampala in May 2019, Namibia had 97 balls remaining when they overhauled Botswana’s 46.Mushfiqur Rahim has now scored three Test double-centuries, yet averages below 40. Is this the lowest? asked Thomas from Germany
Mushfiqur Rahim scored 203 not out – his third Test double-century – in the one-off match against Zimbabwe in Mirpur. That left him with an average of 36.77 – indeed the lowest for anyone with three 200s. Next comes Brendon McCullum, who averaged 38.64 despite hitting four scores of 200 or more, one of them a triple-century. The only other batsman with three or more who averaged under 40 was Sri Lanka’s Marvan Atapattu (39.02), who hit no fewer than six Test double-centuries.The lowest average of anyone who scored two Test double-hundreds is 31.47, by India’s Vinoo Mankad – both against New Zealand at home in 1955-56 – while the lowest for anyone with one is the 18.74 of Australia’s Jason Gillespie, who hit 201 not out after going in as nightwatchman in what turned out to be his final Test, against Bangladesh in Chittagong (now Chattogram) in 2005-06.And finally there’s an update to last week’s question about tall New Zealand Test players, from the Indian journalist Bipin Dani:
“I spoke to Kerry Walmsley, who is mentioned at the end of last week’s article, and he said: ‘I’m not quite as tall as Kyle Jamieson. I’m six foot six inches. I have met Kyle, as I am a selector for the Auckland Aces. I haven’t spoken much about his height to be honest – it’s just nice to look up to someone when you’re as tall as I am!”Use our feedback form or the Ask Steven Facebook page to ask your stats and trivia questions

Livvy Dunne Had Perfect Response to Tigers Mascot's Attempt to Distract Paul Skenes

The Detroit Tigers' mascot Paws tried to do his part to distract Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes as he was dealing on the bump at Comerica Park on Thursday. He threw six innings and tied a season-high with nine strikeouts, but will record yet another no decision after the Tigers tied the game after Skenes's exit.

The Pirates ace had it going though, amidst a clever, yet audacious distraction attempt from Paws behind home plate. Skenes makes up one half of debatably the most notable couple across sports with his girlfriend, former LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne.

As Skenes toed the rubber Thursday, Paws held a big sign that said "sup Livvy Dunne" adorned with hearts to try and get in the NL Cy Young favorite's head. A bold and pretty hilarious attempt. It turned out to be just a failed attempt as Skenes set Tigers' batters down on strikes left and right, giving up two earned runs in his six-inning outing.

Dunne quickly took notice and posted the perfect response to the Tigers' mascot.

"Sorry… not my type of tiger," the LSU alum wrote on her X account.

Skenes and Dunne recently made the trip to Omaha to cheer on their LSU Tigers in the men's College World Series. LSU is set to meet Coastal Carolina in the championship final round, which is a best-of-three series and begins Saturday.

Jenni Hermoso completes fairy tale Spain comeback with Nations League final victory over Germany as Alexia Putellas revels in 'magical night'

Spain's all-time leading goalscorer Jenni Hermoso was celebrating once again on Tuesday night after helping the national team beat Germany to win the Nations League final. The 35-year-old made an emotional return to the Spain squad in October, following a year long absence, and has crowned her comeback in style by adding more silverware to her collection.

  • Joy for Hermoso and Spain

Hermoso was a late substitute as Spain beat Germany 3-0 in the second leg of their final to secure victory. La Roja were without three-time Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati for the match, after she suffered a broken leg in the build-up, but still eased to victory thanks to a brace from Claudia Pina and a Vicky Lopez goal. The victory means Spain retain their title and add it to their 2023 World Cup final win. Hermoso featured in that game, which was overshadowed by a kiss on the lips from Luis Rubiales in the presentation ceremony that culminated in a sexual assault conviction for the former RFEF president.

The Spain star admitted victory was the result of plenty of hard work, telling reporters afterwards: “It has been many months of work, of thinking about putting [a Spain shirt] on again and, in the end, everything has its reward. We continue to show we are the best team in the world.”

    'Magical night' for Spain

Spain's victory was achieved at the Estadi Metropolitano in Madrid in front of a crowd of 55,843 fans, a record for the national team in a home game. Barcelona star Alexia Putellas, who is no stranger to the big stage and has won countless major titles for club and country, admitted it was a special night.

“It’s one of the most magical nights we’ve lived, one of the best nights of my career,” she told reporters. “Thank you very much to these people who have come to support us. At this point, some of us have been playing for the national team for 13 years and never imagined this. It says a lot about what we’ve done for women’s football in Spain. We’ll continue to inspire girls and boys to fight for their dreams, which sometimes come true.”

  • First trophy for Bermúdez

Although Spain are no strangers to success, Tuesday's win is a first trophy for manager Sonia Bermúdez. She replaced Montse Tomé at the helm in August and could not hide her delight at the victory.

“I’m very happy. We knew, after the match in Germany, that we could improve on that first half, and today the team came out much more switched on, much more focused, pressing higher. That was the idea. It’s true we could’ve scored in the first half, but we controlled their transitions well. Defensively, the team was spectacular, and in attack we have players with a real eye for goal. We’re very happy," she told reporters.

“I feel enormous joy. My whole family came, and people traveled from far away. We felt the fans so close—this stadium has something special. I played for this club, and I want to thank everyone for their affection and support. We wanted to give the fans this victory because they gave us everything.

"We’re going to enjoy today, this victory, because it takes so much to achieve. In February we’ll start thinking about World Cup qualifying.”

World Cup 2027 now in sight

Spain's victory, achieved comfortably without Bonmati, demonstrates once again how impressive Bermudez's team is and means they will begin World Cup 2027 qualifying as one of the favourites for the trophy. Bermudez's team kick off their qualifying campaign in March with games against Iceland and Ukraine.

He'd end Ugarte's Man Utd career: INEOS make £100m ace their "dream" target

Manchester United’s central midfield department has been one that has been up for debate, with numerous players trying to stake their claim for a regular starting role.

Ruben Amorim has often struggled to find his best partnership in such an area of the pitch, leading to countless players being utilised in the middle of the park since his appointment.

However, Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro have been the manager’s duo of choice of late, with the pair starting each of the Red Devils’ five Premier League matches in a row.

The club have remained unbeaten during such a period, showcasing that the boss has made the right decision in opting for the pair instead of selecting the likes of Kobbie Mainoo.

However, with Casemiro now 33, he’s likely coming to the back end of his career at the top level, with the hierarchy already laying the foundations for a move for one player in the January window.

Man Utd’s hunt for a new midfielder in January

Over the last couple of days, it’s been reported that United are targeting a move for Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson in the upcoming January transfer window.

It’s been claimed that the Red Devils have already made an approach to Sean Dyche’s side to register their interest in landing the 23-year-old England international in the coming months.

However, any deal would be a club record, with the Reds currently demanding a fee in the region of £100m to part ways with their star man during the upcoming market.

He’s not the only midfielder in their sights at present, as Brighton & Hove Albion star Carlos Baleba has once again appeared on their radar, if recent reports are to be believed.

According to one Spanish outlet, Amorim and INEOS have made the Cameroonian international their “dream” target for January, but like Anderson, he would set them back a small fortune.

They also state that a £100m deal would be needed to prise him away from the AMEX, but that the player himself would be open to a switch to move to Old Trafford in the near future.

Why United’s £100m target would end Ugarte’s career

It wouldn’t be the first time United have splashed the cash on a new central midfielder, especially after spending a reported £50m for the signature of Manuel Ugarte back in 2024.

The Uruguayan’s transfer generated huge excitement within the Red Devils fanbase, with his arrival finally handing the side the disruptive presence needed to regain possession.

However, a little over 12 months on from his switch to England’s top-flight, he’s since dropped down the pecking order, as seen by his tally of just two league starts in 2025/26.

Amorim has undoubtedly lost faith in the 24-year-old at present, with a new addition only pushing the former PSG star further down the list – which could tempt the hierarchy to cash in on his services.

Spending £100m on a new addition would be a huge statement of intent, but it would no doubt put the future signing ahead of Ugarte in the pecking order due to the fee alone.

Baleba now appears to be the most likely candidate to join the Red Devils in January, with the youngster offering an immediate and long-term upgrade on the Uruguayan.

When comparing their stats from the 2025/26 campaign, the Brighton star has managed to outperform him in numerous key areas – potentially making his £100m price tag an excellent deal.

The 21-year-old has completed more of the passes he’s attempted this campaign, whilst completing more of the long passes he’s attempted – highlighting the dominance he has over Ugarte in possession.

He’s also completed more of the dribbles he’s attempted, further showcasing his all-round talents with the ball at his feet in the Premier League this season.

Out of possession, Baleba has won more duels per 90, whilst making more interceptions per 90 – subsequently offering the side a more dominant option out of possession.

£100m would be a huge statement of intent from the United hierarchy, but given his tender age, Baleba would be the perfect immediate and long-term solution to their problems.

As to Ugarte, such a transfer would likely spell the end of his time in Manchester, with the board needing to offload him to avoid losing a huge chunk of their £50m investment.

O'Neill 2.0: Celtic chasing "one of the best coaches" as Ange alternative

Should Celtic re-appoint Ange Postecoglou to replace Brendan Rodgers?

Well, the Australian did enjoy great success during his two seasons in Glasgow, winning five trophies, meaning he may remain the club’s most universally popular manager of the modern era.

However, following an ill-fated 39 days stint in charge of Nottingham Forest, reports suggest that Postecoglou is not looking to jump straight back into management, while his record at Tottenham and the City Ground, Europa League triumph aside, would be causes for concern, suggesting he may not be the dream candidate some supporters believe him to be.

Instead, should they target “one of the best coaches” around in a move reminiscent of what occurred in the year 2000?

Martin O'Neill's Celtic career

On Monday evening, when news of Rodgers’ resignation was announced, Celtic also confirmed that Martin O’Neill would be placed in interim charge, working alongside Shaun Maloney.

This is the 73 year old’s first managerial position since an Ange-esque 19 game stint at Nottingham Forest in 2019 and, having been in charge of the Republic of Ireland for five years before that, he hasn’t truly been a club manager since leaving Sunderland in 2013.

He did make a winning start to life back in the dugout, overseeing a 4-0 demolition of Falkirk in the Premiership on Wednesday night, with Johnny Kenny bagging a brace, while Benjamin Nygren and Sebastian Tounekti were also on target.

Sunday’s League Cup semi-final against fierce rivals Rangers at Hampden should be a significantly tougher assignment, but O’Neill certainly has pedigree when it comes to winning Old Firm games.

The Irishman began his managerial career in the ’90s with very impressive stints in charge of Wycombe Wanderers and Leicester City, gaining promotion in charge of both, before winning two League Cups with the Foxes.

This earned him the Celtic job in 2000, viewed very much as a left-field choice at the time, but this proved to be a masterstroke.

Prior to his arrival, Rangers had won 11 of the last 12 Scottish titles, but O’Neill won the league in three of his first four seasons as well as leading Celtic to the UEFA Cup Final in 2003, ultimately defeated by José Mourinho’s Porto at the Cartuja in Seville.

Not since Jock Stein has a Celtic manager been so successful in Europe, with O’Neill also winning 13 of his 24 Old Firm games, while he also boasts the best win percentage of any permanent Hoops boss in history, before even including Wednesday’s win.

O’Neill will be hoping to improve that win ratio further, for however long he remains in the dugout, although that won’t be easy, with games against Rangers and then Midtjylland in Herning next on the agenda.

So, should Celtic appoint someone who is reminiscent of when O’Neill first arrived a quarter of a century ago?

Celtic could appoint 'one of the best coaches' in England

Of all the people reportedly in contention to become Celtic manager, Nicky Hayen, Craig Bellamy, Robbie Keane, Kjetil Knutsen and others, would Kieran McKenna represent the biggest coup?

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

Sky Sports has reported that the Ipswich Town boss is a name whom the Celtic hierarchy are ‘very keen on’, although it remains to be seen if he would leave mid-season – while a reported £5m get-out clause could also prove prohibitive.

Just 39 years old, the Northern Irishman has been in coaching since 2009, employed by Tottenham and Manchester United as a youth coach and scout, before working alongside José Mourinho and then Ole Gunnar Solskjær as an assistant at Old Trafford.

Solskjær spoke glowingly about McKenna, describing him as “the most thorough and analytical… process-driven coach that I’ve worked with”, while fellow ex-Man United great Nicky Butt agrees, labelling him “one of the best coaches I’ve ever seen on the grass”.

His reputation earned him his first head coach role at Ipswich, enjoying unparalleled success in Suffolk, guiding the Tractor Boys to back-to-back promotions, leading them back into the Premier League for the first time since 2002, even if they were relegated straight away.

A mixed start to this EFL Championship campaign has the Blues 12th, but there is still firm belief that, with McKenna in charge, the East Anglian-based outfit will be promotion contenders.

In fact, despite taking a battering pretty much every week in the Premier League last season, only Mick O’Brien in the ’30s and Sir Alf Ramsey have a better win percentage of any Ipswich boss in history.

As outlined by the Coaches Voice, McKenna favours a ‘short-passing style’ with width provided by attacking full-backs, allowing wingers to drift inside, concluding that this approach should take him ‘ to the top of the game as a coach’, something that would suit how Celtic have played in the past and their current squad.

Also, as documents, McKenna’s history working with youth teams means he is more than willing to bring through younger players, helping Omari Hutchinson and others realise their true potential at Portman Road.

So, while his lack of experience, and poor Premier League record, with an admittedly weak squad, are causes for concern, the Celtic board must be bold, rather than churning through the same three of four faces.

If Neil Lennon wasn’t currently Dunfermline Athletic manager, he’d almost certainly be in the dugout; the Pars face Scott Brown’s Ayr United on Friday, winner gets the Celtic job anyone?

On a serious note, when O’Neill arrived in 2000, this was off the back of work with Wycombe and Leicester largely in the EFL, so who is to say McKenna could not do something similar, as he would certainly bring a freshness and new ideas to a club going a bit stale.

Everton scouts spotted watching "incredible" striker with 42 goals in 49 games

Everton are among a host of clubs to have sent scouts to watch a specific team in action in the Champions League, with a “world-class” player named as a potential target.

Everton lining up new strikers for January

The Blues have been a little goal-shy in the Premier League so far this season, with Beto struggling to be a consistent source of end product, so a new striker could be needed in 2026.

Ivan Toney has been linked with a move to Everton in the January transfer window, with the 29-year-old potentially seeing it as a good way of forcing himself into England’s World Cup squad, rather than being more unseen in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli.

It has been claimed that the former Brentford man would prefer to move to the Blues than join West Ham, acting as a boost, and he is also keen on working with David Moyes, which can only be a good thing for the Merseysiders.

It remains to be seen if a move for Toney comes to fruition in January, but if not, another striker needs to come in next summer, and a world-renowned attacking player has now been mentioned as an option.

Everton spotted watching "world-class" star

According to a new update from Sabah [via Sport Witness], Everton had scouts present for Galatasaray’s Champions League clash with Bodo/Glimt in midweek, with striker Victor Osimhen among the players being watched by the Blues, scoring twice on the night.

It is claimed that Napoli, Roma, Wolves and VfB Stuttgart also had representatives there, with Baris Alper Yilmaz and Yunus Akgun the other players mentioned as possible targets.

While it isn’t concrete that Everton’s scouts were there specifically to keep an eye on Osimhen, his brace would have forced them to take notice, and the idea of him in a Blues shirt is a mouthwatering prospect, given his status as one of the most devastating strikers in the world on his day.

The Nigerian has been a goal machine wherever he has been in recent years, most notably scoring 76 goals in 133 appearances for Napoli and helping them win the Serie A title, and now netting 42 times in just 49 outings for Galatasaray.

At 26 years of age, he is still at a great point in his career, with journalist Buchi Laba calling him “world-class” and Mario Lemina also heaping praise on his teammate.

Everton now serious about signing £22m-a-year star who wants to work with Moyes

The Toffees could land a major upgrade on Beto.

ByTom Cunningham Oct 23, 2025

Osimhen would be an even more exciting signing than Jack Grealish for Everton, having the ability to take the Blues up a level single-handedly, but whether they can lure him to England remains to be seen.

Manchester United targeting another major milestone after beating Liverpool, but can they reproduce a run they haven’t achieved in a staggering 49 games?

Manchester United are on a roll following recent victories, including the morale-boosting win over deadly rivals Liverpool at Anfield. But the dust has settled on that fine win and boss Ruben Amorim has another landmark target to overcome when they face Brighton at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Mixed results so far for Man United

It’s been a turbulent period for Man United following a dismal 15th-place finish and a Europa League final defeat last season, the club also failed to qualify for European competition. Amorim's side currently sit ninth in the Premier League, but top-four ambitions have improved following recent, positive results. The new-look attack, featuring signings Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha, have shown promise but the early exit from the Carabao Cup to Grimsby Town was damaging. With significant transfer activity and a lack of European football, the pressure remains on Amorim to deliver more consistent results and improve on the previous season's poor performance.

Amorim said: "The squad is fine. We have some doubts, we had some issues during the week, with Harry Maguire and Mason Mount. Knocks, but nothing serious. Licha (Martinez) is out, but the rest are ready for the game. I think it's always going to be like always, but it's going to be a very difficult game. It's a difficult team. They are fun to watch, really good with build-up, really strong with transitions in every aspect of the game and are doing well with set-pieces. I don't know (when he will return), he trained really well. Not with us, but on the next pitch and I was watching also the training. He's feeling well and the knee is responding really well, so I don't want to say one specific day or week, but he's near to starting the training with the team. Then it depends whether he wins a place or not. That will depend on him, but he is closer to returning to (full) training."

The numbers stack up for Amorim

Following their victory against Sunderland before the international break, Amorim's side secured that thrilling win at Anfield, achieving back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time under the Portuguese boss. The double gave United a significant boost and moved them within two points of Liverpool. Amorim's next challenge is to build on this success and guide United to a third consecutive victory, a feat the club has not accomplished in 49 games. That winning run came during games in February last year when they beat Wolves, West Ham, and Aston Villa, which was part of a larger winning streak under former manager Erik ten Hag.

On the win over Liverpool, Amorim said: "We use the good spirit of winning games we know that was a good weekend for us but our focus is on the next game. That is in the past and we need to understand that football changes a lot, especially this kind of club so we are not thinking about the last game, we are thinking about this game and it is going to be really hard to win."

Amorim said: "We have one identity, one way of playing but we adapt what kind of game we need to play in the moment. You could sense that the first half against Sunderland was not the same as the second half. We know how to manage that. Against Liverpool we scored right away in the first play and then we managed the game and played a different style because it was needed in that moment – that is a good thing. Then we have a good spirit and sometimes when you have a good spirit, you have a bit of luck that you need to win games."

After the visit of Brighton, United have away matches at Nottingham Forest on November 1st and Tottenham on November 8th. Later in November, they will host Everton.
