Why MLB Finally Invested in Professional Softball

The Athletes Unlimited Softball League will begin play in June with something that none of its predecessor leagues ever had. It will have the financial support of MLB.

The professional softball landscape has historically been fragmented and shaky. But as the sport has grown on the youth and college levels over the last few years—against the backdrop of a larger swell in women’s sports—MLB became increasingly interested in growing its involvement here. It weighed the idea of starting its own softball league. But it decided instead to invest in the existing start-up Athletes Unlimited.

It marks MLB’s first major involvement in women’s sports at a time when more and more organizations are trying to capitalize on recent growth opportunities in that landscape. It has the potential to create a dramatic shift in professional softball. And it presents a different model for an established men’s league stepping into women’s sports. Rather than starting a league and retaining majority ownership—as the NBA did with the WNBA—or taking modest steps toward collaboration without any financial relationship—as the NHL has done with the PWHL—MLB is taking an equity stake in the AUSL.

MLB and AUSL officially announced the investment on Thursday. Its terms were not disclosed, but sources close to the deal confirmed that it was eight figures, which was reported by ESPN as more than a 20% stake for MLB.

“If you look at Major League Baseball historically, something like this is not taken lightly,” says MLB chief baseball development officer Tony Reagins. “We’re leaning in on all parts of our business to make this a sustainable league.”

MLB and Athletes Unlimited executives first met in 2019. That was shortly before the organization launched with a fairly radical structure: Rather than establish a set of teams for a traditional league, Athletes Unlimited would rank players individually on a leaderboard by assigning points for almost everything that could be done on a softball field, shuffling team assignments each week accordingly over a brief season. Those early conversations included Kim Ng, then senior vice president of baseball operations for MLB, who was also a former college softball player who had worked on various softball initiatives for the league.

There was nothing concrete in those initial talks. Athletes Unlimited began play soon after with its signature model in 2020. (It started with softball before expanding to volleyball, basketball and lacrosse, all for women.) Ng left the MLB commissioner’s office to become the general manager of the Miami Marlins. Over the next few years, Athletes Unlimited experimented with format and presentation. But crucially for a sport like softball, where professional opportunities have come and gone and rarely paid more than four figures in the U.S., the organization remained a consistent opportunity. It was certainly not a traditional softball league or season. But it paid better than many of its predecessors, it had several broadcast partners, and it offered a stable professional environment in a sport where players have never been able to take that for granted.

With investment and interest growing across women’s sports, MLB and Athletes Unlimited struck up talks again last spring. The initial goal was not an equity stake or major investment: “Where we’ve ended up, honestly, far surpasses what I could have expected even a year ago,” says Athletes Unlimited CEO Jon Patricof. But the last year saw two major turning points. Athletes Unlimited announced that it would launch a more traditional softball league in 2025, beginning with four teams barnstorming this summer around the United States, with plans to expand to six teams anchored in specific cities in ’26. And it brought on Ng, first in the role of strategic advisor and then as commissioner of the newly announced league, the AUSL.

Ng worked in MLB for 30 years and had been widely respected by peers across the league. Her addition was key for the AUSL.

“We’d watched the operation from afar, saw how they conducted business, saw the creativity, the innovation, how they utilize their players—those things were interesting,” Reagins says. “Kim comes on board, and the comfort level just grew in terms of the structure, their stability. We felt they could be a partner that we could stand alongside long-term.”

It represents a meaningful opportunity for Ng. “It’s very personal,” she says of working in softball. It also represents an intriguing challenge for the longtime executive.

Professional softball in the U.S. has traditionally operated with very limited infrastructure and with hardly any external investment. National Pro Fastpitch was the main domestic option for American players for nearly 20 years. But teams popped up and disappeared year by year, and the pay was so low that players could not afford to treat the league as a serious, full-time gig. (The average salary was $5,000 in NPF’s last full season of operation in 2019.) There is a long history of independent teams and smaller leagues. Elite players have often left to pursue more lucrative opportunities in Japan. There has never been one stable league to consistently attract talent and offer growth opportunities for the sport.

“We’ve never had one North Star where an athlete could say, ,” says retired player Natasha Watley, who won Olympic gold with Team USA in 2004 and went on to be the all-time batting average leader in NPF and to play in Japan. “I’m thinking this is going to be it.”

Watley has spent years as MLB’s youth softball ambassador. She is now an advisor to the AUSL.

The question is how much the sport can grow with a consistent professional league. Ng points out that growth in college softball has never had a meaningful chance to translate to growth in the pros: “For baseball, they get to see their players go on from college… Ours are done in four years. That’s hard to get a game to grow.” The Women’s College World Series Finals had a record average viewership of 2 million in 2024. Figuring out how to harness and tap into even just a fraction of that interest will be critical.

Many of the AUSL barnstorming locations this summer will be in college softball hotbeds, such as Norman, Okla. and Tuscaloosa, Ala. They will also play in Rosemont, Ill., just outside Chicago, where previous softball games were held for Athletes Unlimited.

MLB’s eight-figure investment provides a level of capital the sport had never previously seen in the U.S. Patricof says that money will be used for purposes and departments across the league. (The average player salary for the AUSL this year will be $45,000.) And beyond the funding itself, MLB’s partnership also signifies a chance for visibility, crossover marketing, and corporate sponsorship opportunities that have previously not been on the table for pro softball.

“Those are huge things that money can’t buy,” Patricof says.

The AUSL already had a broadcast deal to air 33 games this summer on ESPN. The MLB partnership will include games aired on MLB Network, too. Patricof says that all games will be on linear TV.

Both sides of the partnership say their time horizons are long here.

“MLB is going in eyes wide open,” Patricof says. “No one’s looking to get involved to turn a profit in the short term… This is going to require sustained investment over a long period of time. There’s a lot of work to do to build out the commercial side of this business.”

And the fact that it remains its own distinct business is meaningful. Both sides have said they believe the AUSL will have a better chance of success as its own league—rather than as one that might have been purchased outright and run by MLB. That means a certain degree of operational independence and nimbleness, of course, but also a chance to build a more distinct brand.

The investment here is also notable for what it is not. MLB’s youth initiatives in recent years have included both softball and girls’ baseball. The Women’s Professional Baseball League will launch with six teams in 2026. But the choice for investment here was softball.

“We feel the talent pool right now is not as deep as softball,” Reagins says of women’s baseball. “We’re working on building a pipeline. The infrastructure is not as structured as softball, so we have a ways to go in terms of women’s baseball, but it’s something that we’re going to continue to lean into.”

Newcastle's first problem in fresh attempt to beat Liverpool to Joel Ordonez

In another transfer race against Liverpool, Newcastle United are already reportedly facing a frustrating problem in pursuit of Club Brugge defender Joel Ordonez.

Those at St James’ Park have to get their transfer business right next year. The summer was simply far too chaotic and they’ve been paying the price ever since. Had they been more organised and got their business over the line early, Eddie Howe’s side may have clicked back into top gear by now.

Newcastle's £100m star in the making is "all over the place" without Isak

This Newcastle United star is seriously struggling at the moment, having once been touted to be worth £100m.

ByKelan Sarson Nov 4, 2025

The reality is that they’re far from their best right now and defeat against West Ham United exposed that. Howe was understandably left disappointed by his side and told reporters that he could’ve taken anyone off at half-time.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville backed that criticism, claiming that Newcastle let their manager down in a scathing review of their performance on Sunday.

Sat in the bottom half of the Premier League after falling to defeat against the Hammers, Newcastle are already looking towards the January transfer window and beyond for solutions.

The likes of Alexander Sorloth are reportedly among the names on the Magpies’ list of targets, but it’s not just strikers that they’re looking at.

Those on Tyneside are also reportedly targeting a move to sign Ordonez, but must first overcome a frustrating problem in pursuit of his signature.

Newcastle pushing to sign Ordonez

As reported by Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Newcastle are now pushing to sign Ordonez in a fresh transfer battle with Liverpool, but have been handed their first problem by the defender’s recent contract renewal.

The Club Brugge star has put pen to paper on a fresh deal which is set to last until 2029. This means that the Magpies will likely have to pay a premium price if they want to land the defender’s signature as soon as 2026, with Brugge now in a strong negotiating position.

O’Rourke told Football Insider: “Liverpool, obviously we know about their defensive issues. He’s been linked to Aston Villa who are also admirers of him and Newcastle as well have been keeping tabs on the Ecuador international’s situation.

“He’s done very well for Club Brugge, playing in the Champions League, playing at the highest level and has been outstanding for Ecuador in their successful qualification to the World Cup.

“There was obviously speculation around his future in the summer, but Brugge managed to keep hold of him and tied him down to a new contract in September that runs until 2029.”

Newcastle duo must now never start together again

Vincent Kompany and Pep Guardiola in 'regular contact' as Bayern Munich boss names Man City mentor 'key' in his bright coaching career

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany revealed that he remains in regular contact with Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola. The Belgian, who played under Guardiola during his time at City, credited the the Spanish coach with playing a key role in his promising career and said their relationship continues to be strong.

Kompany's mentorship under guardiola

Kompany joined Manchester City in 2008 and went on to spend 11 successful years at the club, becoming one of its most iconic captains. During his time in Manchester, he played under several managers, but it was under Guardiola, between 2016 and 2019, that his tactical understanding of the game reached new heights. Kompany made 62 appearances under Guardiola, scoring six goals and providing two assists, while playing a key role in City’s dominant era. Together, they won back-to-back Premier League titles in 2017-18 and 2018-19, along with the FA Cup in 2019.

Guardiola’s focus on positional play, ball control and tactical flexibility had a strong influence on Kompany. His current coaching style shows that impact, as he uses a similar system based on structured build up play, fluid attacking movements, and disciplined pressing. These principles have shaped the way he manages his teams.

"Pep played a very important role in my career as a player and my development as a coach," Kompany said at a press conference when asked about his current relationship with the Catalan coach. "He is currently busy getting back to the top of the Premier League, we are in regular contact and get along well."

After finishing a disappointing third in the Premier League by City’s lofty standards in the 2024-25 season, Guardiola's team are currently second, six points behind league leaders Arsenal.

Bayern's resurgence under Kompany

Bayern's incredible start to the season continues, with the team winning all 16 of their matches across all competitions so far. Their flawless run has caught the attention of many, with Koln coach Lukas Kwasniok declaring Bayern strong contenders for the treble this season. Much of the team’s success has been attributed to Kompany’s distinctive style of play, which emphasises perseverance, sacrifice and collective responsibility. His approach has revitalised several players, most notably star striker Harry Kane and midfielder Konrad Laimer, both of whom have thrived under his leadership.

Kane has maintained his scoring consistency, while Laimer has earned widespread praise for his tireless work rate and tactical intelligence. Kompany’s man management and commitment to discipline have brought unity and balance to Bayern’s squad. Bayern and France defender Dayot Upamecano has experienced a resurgence under Kompany after struggling for consistency under former coaches Julian Nagelsmann and Thomas Tuchel. The French centre-back has openly praised Kompany, calling him an example to follow both on and off the pitch.

In a recent interview, Upamecano said: “We all watched him when we were young; he was a legend for Belgium and Manchester City. He was a very aggressive defender in duels, a leader on the pitch too, a good example for me. He helps me a lot; we do a lot of videos, he talks to me about my positioning. With him, it's always very intense.”

Getty Images SportKompany's pursuit of Guardiola's record

Bayern will travel to face Union Berlin on Saturday as they look to continue their perfect start to the season. A win would see Kompany equal his mentor Guardiola’s record of 10 consecutive victories in his first 10 Bundesliga matches of a campaign, a milestone the former Barcelona boss set during the 2015-16 season. They are already five points clear of nearest challengers RB Leipzig.

Bayern fans will be eager to see star striker Kane continue his fine form and get on the scoresheet once again against a team sitting 10th in the table and coming off the back of a goalless draw against Freiburg. With Bayern already showing remarkable consistency and confidence under Kompany, another win would further underline their dominance and strengthen their status as favourites for the Bundesliga title.

It's not Sesko: Man Utd "monster" is in danger of becoming another Hojlund

Benjamin Sesko’s form in a Manchester United shirt has taken a real upturn in the last couple of weeks. The Slovenian forward has scored twice in his last two games, scoring against Brentford in the 3-1 loss away from home, and the second in a 2-0 win at home to Sunderland.

United content creator Dev Bajwa has certainly been left impressed by the young centre-forward. He called his all-around play “impressive” and said that his “technical qualities are clearly there” in his game.

The United number 30 has certainly started life at Old Trafford well.

Interestingly, he has not had a faster start to the season than Rasmus Hojlund, the man he replaced.

Hojlund’s start to the season compared to Sesko

After struggling to nail down his spot in the starting lineup under Ruben Amorim, Danish striker Hojlund went out on loan to Napoli for the 2025/26 campaign. Like Sesko has at United, Hojlund has hit the ground running in Italy.

The 22-year-old, who was born in Copenhagen, has already found the back of the net four times for Napoli this season, in just six appearances, double Sesko’s tally. Half have come in the Italian top flight, and the other in the Champions League.

So, not only has Hojlund outscored Sesko this season, but the Dane is also bettering him when it comes to minutes per goal.

The on-loan Napoli star averages one goal every 117 minutes, with Sesko’s goals coming every 237.5 minutes.

Napoli’s Scudetto-winning boss, Antonio Conte, was full of praise for the striker. The Italian said that the 22-year-old “has great potential, he can grow and improve,” suggesting the best is yet to come.

So, a loan move away from United clearly worked for Hojlund, allowing him to get minutes under his belt and thrive. Another young Red Devils striker is currently on a similar path.

The United striker on the same path as Hojlund

It is a shame things did not work out for Hojlund at Old Trafford. Just looking at how well he’s playing this season is enough to be able to tell just how much of a talent he is.

He certainly could have been excellent at United if platformed well.

Well, United may have a striker headed down a similar path under Ruben Amorim. It has not been an easy season for 17-year-old Chido Obi. There are simply no opportunities for youth under Amoirm, which goes against the DNA of the club, and Obi has fallen foul of that.

In fact, the former Arsenal youth striker, who was described as a “monster” of a centre-forward by football analyst Ben Mattinson, has not even been on the bench for the first team this season.

That might be a surprise to many, given how much trust Amorim placed in Obi last term. The 17-year-old played eight games for the Red Devils, but did not manage to find the back of the net.

He also became the youngest ever player to start a Premier League match for United.

Let’s not forget how clinical Obi has been at youth level. The Dane, born in Glostrup, has an exemplary record for both United and Arsenal in academy football.

He’s currently sat on 49 goals across under-18 and under-21 level.

It is easy to see how this situation is similar to Hojlund’s last season. The Napoli star fell out of favour under Amorim, and needed a loan move to revitalise his career.

Whilst Obi is only 17 and not at that sort of stage yet, he would surely have been hoping for more first-team minutes given his involvement last term.

Perhaps, like his compatriot, a loan move is the way forward for Obi. It will guarantee him regular first-team minutes, and if he is able to score a few goals like Hojlund has managed, it would do his confidence the world of good.

Worth way more than Hojlund: Man Utd have struck gold on "incredible" star

Kylian Mbappe should be given 'free rein' at Real Madrid as Arda Guler endorses comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo & Mesut Ozil amid budding partnership with French forward

Arda Guler was full of praise for Kylian Mbappe while describing his relationship with the Real Madrid talisman. The duo's chemistry on the pitch has led to comparisons with former Madrid stars Mesut Ozil and Cristiano Ronaldo, with Guler adding that Mbappe and him "understand each other perfectly." Real Madrid have won nine games out of 10 this season, thanks to the brilliance of Guler and Mbappe in attack.

Real Madrid off to a flier under Xabi Alonso

The Xabi Alonso era at Real Madrid has been off to a positive start. Hired at the end of last season, Madrid made it to the semi-finals of the Club World Cup in the summer. The 2025-26 season began with six wins from the opening six La Liga games, despite Alonso and his players not having the luxury of a full pre-season. They have won nine games out of 10 across all competitions, the only loss coming at the hands of their neighbouring rivals Atletico Madrid.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportGuler handed the keys to Madrid's midfield by Alonso

Guler has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of Alonso's arrival. The Turkish wonderkid has nailed his place in midfield, where he has played both as a deep-lying playmaker and as an advanced No. 8 operating closer to the opponents' box. He has already racked up three goals and four assists, while also leading several statistical charts in the league. No other player in Spain's top-flight has created more chances than Guler's 22.

Guler heaps praise on Mbappe amid Ozil-Ronaldo comparisons

One of the biggest factors behind Los Blancos' impressive start to the season is the connection shared between Mbappe and Guler. The duo have drawn comparisons to the partnership shared by Ozil and Ronaldo between 2010 and 2013, with the ex-German international laying 31 assists for the club's all-time top scorer in 149 games played together.

Mbappe has been on a tear, scoring 14 goals in 10 games. It's no surprise that all of Guler's four assists have come for Mbappe.

Speaking to , Guler praised Mbappe. He said: "Some say he drops back too much into midfield, but I think we should let him play wherever he wants. His talent should be given free rein. If he moves into midfield and drops back a little, it’s not for nothing. He has the knowledge to do that, he understands the demands of the game."

He also explained why they connect so well with each other on the field. “His qualities and mine are in harmony," he said. “We understand each other well, the relationship is smooth. Sometimes we talk before the game and say, ‘Today, we have to do this or that.’ And sometimes, a glance is enough.

“I like the comparisons between Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil and Kylian Mbappe and Arda Guler. They’ve achieved great things, but significant success is always achieved by a team, never just two players."

AFPGuler eyes more Champions Leagues with Madrid

Having nailed his place in the starting XI, Guler has his eyes set on winning more titles with Real Madrid. After playing no part in the club's Champions League glory in 2023-24, and experiencing a horrible 2024-25 season, Guler is determined to help the club return to lifting more silverware.

“Winning the Champions League once? What we’ve achieved doesn’t count for me, we have to go for another title," said the 20-year-old.

Muyeye, Compton tons see Kent canter home in testing chase

Zak Crawley hits fifty after being dropped on nought before unbroken stand condemns Middlesex

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay13-Apr-2025Tawanda Muyeye and Ben Compton both hit centuries as Kent coasted to an eight-wicket run win over Middlesex in the Rothesay County Championship at Canterbury on Sunday.Muyeye made a fluent unbeaten 125 and Compton a stylish 124 not out in a record-breaking partnership worth 225, after England’s Zak Crawley showed a glimpse of form with 58, having being dropped on nought.Earlier Middlesex were all out for 311, setting Kent what looked like a stiff target of 316 to win. Ben Geddes made 75 and Zafar Gohar contributed 57 down the order, but Gohar was the only visiting bowler to enjoy any success, claiming two wickets in two balls to reduce Kent to 91 for 2. That, however, was as good as it got for the visitors and Compton hit the winning single with 5.4 overs of day three remaining.Middlesex began the day in a strong position on 222 for 6 and with a 226-run lead in the bank, but they lost Geddes early when he pulled Jack Leaning to the backward square leg boundary and was caught by a tumbling Joey Evison, having added just two to his overnight score.Blake Cullen made a useful 22 and saw off eight overs of the new ball before he edged Grant Stewart to Daniel Bell-Drummond at first slip.Stewart then got Toby Roland-Jones lbw for a fifth-ball duck but the last wicket duo of Gohar and Henry Brookes milked the bowlers for 39 runs.Gohar pulled Gilchrist for a huge six to take the lead past 300 and only perished when he cut the same bowler to Jas Singh on the backward point boundary. There was an eerie silence when Crawley, on nought in the first over, edged Roland-Jones to Geddes, who dropped him at third slip. He then drove Roland-Jones for successive fours, edged one through gully, clipped a six over midwicket and looked largely unmolested on his way to the fifty he reached by sweeping Gohar to third man for four.Gohar, however, undid him in his next over, with a ball that pitched near middle and spun back to hit his off stump. Bell-Drummond went to the very next ball, bowled by a delivery that pitched outside and hit off. Yet Muyeye blocked the hat-trick ball and at tea Kent looked favourites on 164 for 2.A pitch that looked so demonic on day one seemed to have been exorcised. Gohar switched ends and switched back again. Muyeye creamed Brookes for a six over square leg that ended up in the car park and drove Gafar through mid-off to reach his hundred.Bowling at Compton’s head proved futile and he cut Gohar through point for four to reach three figures, by which stage Middlesex seemed drained of hope.Muyeye seemed in a hurry to get it done in three days, dumping Gohar into the upper deck of the Cowdrey stand for a huge six.It was the highest ever third-wicket partnership for Kent v Middlesex, eclipsing the 196 made by both Bob Wilson and Colin Cowdrey in 1954 and David Fulton and Matt Walker in 2004.Compton staked his claim for a place in Kent’s Blast side by hitting the same bowler for a maximum over long-on, for only the sixth six of his career and he had the honour of hitting the winning run when he nudged Nathan Fernandes through mid-off.

Newcastle sold their original Anderson for £10m, now he's worth 3x more

Newcastle United will now be hoping, with a depressing transfer window thankfully out of the way, that they can kick into gear in the Premier League when the international break is over.

The expected departure of Alexander Isak to Liverpool was, unfortunately, confirmed at the final hour of an action-packed deadline day.

Yet, it’s not all doom and gloom at St James’ Park, as the Magpies did manage to finally welcome in Yoane Wissa from Brentford to bolster up top, away from also securing the services of Nick Woltemade for a whopping £64m.

On top of that, they did at least manage to get £125m out of Arne Slot’s Reds to part ways with their prized Swede, with Newcastle not always driving the hardest bargain when it comes to the many twists and turns of incomings and outgoings…

Newcastle's disastrous sale of Elliot Anderson

It’s hard to picture Elliot Anderson back in the famous black and white stripes of Newcastle, with the 22-year-old midfield engine now synonymous with Nottingham Forest, ever since clinching a move to the City Ground last year.

In another reality, the Toon would have surely kept a firmer grip on their homegrown gem, but to appropriately balance the books amid PSR concerns, the Tyneside outfit had to surrender and gift Forest the 5-foot-10 star for what looks like now to be a very cheap £35m.

He has since gone on to be a rip-roaring success for the Tricky Trees after lining up for 55 senior games for his boyhood employers, with two goals and seven assists falling into his lap from 45 clashes for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men, leading to an England call-up under Thomas Tuchel for the very first time.

It’s safe to say Anderson shone on debut against Andorra on Saturday evening, taking home the Man of the Match award.

Once dubbed a “phenomenal” talent by ex-Bristol Rovers teammate Alex Rodman when first making waves in the senior game, it’s safe to say the well-rounded midfielder has soared to some unbelievable heights ever since waving goodbye to Tyneside.

He isn’t the only exit from the Newcastle midfield ranks that feels premature with hindsight on side, with the previous regime guilty of selling their original version of Anderson for just £10m all the way back in 2018.

Newcastle's original Anderson sold too early

Thankfully, Howe does have a lot of quality brimming in his midfield department, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, and Sandro Tonali the first names on the 47-year-old’s teamsheet.

Still, for even more depth and competition, having Anderson around would be a luxury he wouldn’t turn down, alongside the prospect of having Mikel Merino back on the Magpies’ books for a second chance at the club.

Mikel Merino

Before becoming a well-known goal threat back on English shores with Arsenal, Merino was a one-season flop at St James’ Park, with only 14 league starts handed to the adaptable Spaniard before he was shipped back off to La Liga with Real Sociedad for £10m.

This has proven to be a costly mistake in the same realm as Anderson’s disastrous departure, with the “exceptional” midfielder – as he has been previously labelled by Spain manager Luis de la Fuente – going on to prove himself as a Premier League-calibre talent under Mikel Arteta.

Away from his standout nine-goal contributions last season in the hustle and bustle of league action, Merino also stood out as a combative and energetic option for Arteta, much like Anderson at Forest, with 4.9 duels won per game, not too far off his counterpart’s heftier total.

To further add to the anguish, Merino has also managed to excel for his nation to bring more similarities into view, with a goal picked up for Spain on the same international break Anderson won his first Three Lions cap.

With the Pamplona-born warrior now worth around the £30m mark, according to Transfermarkt, this feels like another major blunder on Newcastle’s end, away from focusing on just the much-talked-about disappointment of Anderson leaving.

"Wow" – New Leeds signing blown away by "amazing" Elland Road atmosphere

Leeds’ summer signing Gabriel Gudmundsson said the Elland Road “wow” factor helped his side make a winning return to the Premier League.

Lukas Nmecha’s contentious late penalty sealed Leeds’ deserved 1-0 victory against Everton in their first game back in the top flight after a two-year absence. The atmosphere at LS11 reached fever pitch and Sweden left-back Gudmundsson, signed for a reported £10million from Lille in July, acknowledged the fans will be key to their survival chances.

Gudmundsson wowed by Elland Road noise

Gudmundsson told LUTV after an impressive debut: “Wow! I really enjoyed that one, I can tell you that.

“We have to have this atmosphere. It was amazing. It was so good and we need them to push us.

“It does make a difference. Obviously, you’re focused on the game, but you know, hearing the crowd shouting and singing is really nice.

“It adds a small percentage – to work and run and fight even more, so they need to keep doing that.

“In the Premier League we’re going to suffer, but we have to suffer together.”

Gudmundsson said three points in their opener was crucial for Leeds, whose next two league fixtures are at Arsenal and against Newcastle before the first international break in September.

“It was the first game and was really important to start well,” the 26-year-old left-back added. “We know what it means to get three points.

“We know that we have two upcoming games that are going to be really tough.”

Leeds vs Everton ratings supplied by Sofascore

Leeds are waiting to learn the full extent of Ethan Ampadu’s injury after a clattering late second-half challenge by Tim Iroegbunam eventually saw their captain forced off, but one thing they know for certain is they have a budding superstar in Gudmundsson, who was one of the best performers on the night.

The former Lille star covered over 10 kilometers on the night, recording one of the highest Sofascore ratings on the pitch thanks to four clearances, two interceptions, four successful dribbles and two successful crosses.

"Deal to be finalised soon" – £17m league winner has decided to join Leeds

Everton boss David Moyes was furious at referee Chris Kavanagh’s penalty decision, upheld by VAR, after James Tarkowski was adjudged to have handled after leaning into Anton Stach’s deflected shot.

But Everton carried little threat and Daniel Farke will know his team can stay up if they can make life as miserable for every other visitor as they did for the Toffees, while the boss will soon have a new weapon to utilise after Leeds agreed a deal to sign AC Milan stiker Noah Okafor.

Newcastle in the race to hijack Bayern Munich transfer for £22.5m attacker

Newcastle United are in the race to hijack Bayern Munich’s transfer for a £22.5m attacker in the final days of the transfer window.

Newcastle working to sign forwards with Isak still on strike

Following a Premier League defeat to Liverpool, Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak remains on strike as he looks to push through a move to Anfield.

Despite the intervention of chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Isak still wants to sign for the Reds, with Newcastle holding out for £150m after rejecting an opening offer worth £110m.

A PIF delegation, along with co-owner Jamie Reuben, met Isak at his home on Monday before the 3-2 loss to Liverpool, however, there wasn’t much progress in regards to getting the forward back involved with the first-team squad.

PIF and those behind the scenes at St James’ Park now need to bring in attackers of their own before agreeing to sell Isak in a record deal, with Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen a top target for the Magpies.

Newcastle have now had two offers turned down for the Norwegian, and elsewhere Brentford’s Yoane Wissa has also been heavily linked with a transfer.

Strand Larsen and Wissa aren’t the only two Premier League targets for Newcastle, though, in what promises to be a chaotic end to the transfer window on Tyneside.

Newcastle in race for Bayern target Nicolas Jackson

Newcastle are in the race to sign Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea despite a loan bid having been received for the striker from Bayern Munich, according to the PA news agency.

The 24-year-old, who cost the Blues £22.5m from Villarreal, has been told he can leave Stamford Bridge before Monday. The Blues favour a permanent transfer ahead of next week’s deadline, but the only bid so far has come from the Bundesliga champions for a season-long arrangement.

Newcastle want a resolution to Isak’s future before moving for Jackson, who does not have a future at Chelsea following the arrivals of strikers Joao Pedro from Brighton and Liam Delap from Ipswich.

Chelsea need to offload Jackson and Christopher Nkunku in order to move forward with moves for RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons – who favours a move to west London – and Manchester United’s unwanted winger Alejandro Garnacho.

Newcastle are prioritising a new striker, but are still considering a move for a centre-midfielder.

Jackson has been the Blues’ main striker for the last two seasons but endured an almost five-month goal drought in the league between December and May last season. However, he has scored two goals against the Magpies in the past, both in Premier League wins for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

With attackers desperately needed at St James’ Park before Monday, Jackson looks like one to watch for Newcastle.
