Game 1 of the World Series Was About More Than Just Its Historic Ending

Like all iconic, indelible plays, the home run seemed to erase all that came before it. The first-pitch fastball swung the fate of the game and secured the eudaimonia of the crowd, and in the moment it landed in the seats in right field, Game 1 of the 2024 World Series became the Freddie Freeman Game. This was the play that defined the night. This was the moment that people will remember.

Which, of course, is only fair. This was the first walk-off grand slam in the history of the World Series. It was a two-out, bottom-of-the-10th, right-off-the-bat no-doubter. Freeman joined only Kirk Gibson (1988) and Joe Carter (1993) in hitting a walk-off home run when trailing in the World Series. Those games are remembered decades later by those names alone, and this one rightfully will be, too. But that almost feels like a shame.

For this game had so much else worth remembering. This series could have easily buckled under the weight of its own hype: New York versus Los Angeles, heavyweight versus heavyweight, Yankees versus Dodgers, Aaron Judge vs. Shohei Ohtani. But this first game delivered in every way it could have. So much of the discussion around this series focused on the history, the money, the cultural influence. And here was something that at once undercut and overwrote all of that. It was a baseball game so damn good the discussion could not possibly focus on anything else. It will be headlined by its final swing, that walk-off from Dodgers first baseman Freeman, a winning hit made all the more dramatic by a badly sprained ankle that had vexed the 2020 National League MVP for weeks. But there was far more here than just that headline.

“We all enjoy baseball, we enjoy the game, we're all fans of it,” said Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty. “That was just an incredible game from both sides.”

These clubs have played in the World Series more than any other pair in history. Their matchup was discussed and dissected and debated more than any in recent years. But this first game delivered something no one could have even dreamt.

There were fantastic catches and cringe-inducing errors. There was a signature postseason home run from Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton, which is to say a towering, jaw-dropping mammoth of a moonshot. (The exit velocity was 116.6 mph—harder than any ball hit in the World Series since Statcast began recording in 2015.) There was an eighth-inning comeback that only served to set up a 10th-inning comeback. There was a crucial fan interference call with two outs in the top of the ninth. (A fan reached over the outfield wall to pluck what otherwise would likely have been a hit by Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres, who was awarded second base, though he was ultimately left stranded there.) There was one absolutely gorgeous if ultimately futile sacrifice bunt. There were somehow multiple instances of intentionally walking a likely Hall of Fame No. 2 hitter to get to a likely Hall of Fame No. 3 hitter. And then, of course, there was the game-winning, never-happened-before, can-you-believe-it grand slam.

“To see a game like that,” Dodgers reliever Michael Kopech says, “I don’t have the words for it. That was incredible.”

He did more than just see a game like this. Kopech pitched in it: He entered in the top of the ninth, with the game tied, for his first career appearance in the World Series. (The righty got two quick outs before allowing the hard contact that resulted in the interference call.) Yet such was the effect of this game. It could feel like everyone was simply along for the ride. Even the people involved.

“There was some good pitching, some defense, good at-bats, the crowd was into it from pitch one,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “It was an old-school baseball game.”

This was not exactly a traditional pitchers’ duel. But it was as close as one can get in modern postseason baseball. Flaherty carried a scoreless outing into the sixth, faltering at last on the home run to Stanton, ending his night with six strikeouts, five hits and one walk. Yankees ace Gerrit Cole pitched into the seventh and expertly carved his way through a fearsome Dodgers lineup. (The fact that both starters pitched into the sixth was somewhat noteworthy: That did not happen once this October in either the ALCS or NLCS.) This was one key factor of the many that made this game memorable. The starting pitchers felt like central characters. They did not ultimately serve as the biggest stars. But they were on stage long enough to shape the drama and set the stakes.

That gave way an hour later to an ending the players will not soon forget. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team stay on the field for 20 minutes after the final play, just to watch it and soak it in with the fans,” says Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen, who’d finished the game for L.A., walking off the mound believing he blew it only to get bailed out by his teammates for the 6-3 victory. “That was the most incredible moment in baseball I’ve seen.”

The sentiment was echoed by players up and down the roster, and by Roberts, too, who has been involved in more than his share of memorable plays: It was a credit to Freeman, of course, but it was also a credit to every play that came before him. The final moment could not have brought such joy had the game it ended not been so tense.

Faruque Ahmed removed as BCB president

Faruque Ahmed is no longer the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president after the country’s sports ministry removed him as its representative on the BCB’s board of directors. The ministry issued a statement on Thursday evening after it received a no-confidence motion against Faruque signed by eight BCB directors.”In light of the no-confidence letter sent by eight BCB directors against Faruque Ahmed, and the report presented by the fact-finding committee about the BPL, his nomination as the representative of the National Sports Council (sports ministry) has been cancelled,” the statement from Bangladesh’s sports ministry said.Faruque was one of two directors nominated by the sport ministry to the BCB’s board of directors. He was made director on August 21 last year and elected BCB president the same day. His tenure lasted nine months and eight days. The directors who signed the no-confidence motion – though there is no room for one in the BCB constitution – were Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, Mahbubul Anam, Kazi Inam Ahmed, Fahim Sinha, Salahuddin Chowdhury, Iftikhar Rahman, Saifur Alam Swapan Chowdhury and Manjur Alam. Former Bangladesh captain Akram Khan was the only board director – apart from Faruque himself – who didn’t sign the letter. The directors accused Faruque of autocratic leadership and constitutional violations. They pointed towards clause 14-B of the BCB’s constitution, which requires approval of the board of directors when hiring or sacking coaches. Faruque, the letter said, dismissed Chandika Hathurusingha in October without informing the board of directors. They also claim Faruque didn’t perform due diligence when approving BPL franchises Durbar Rajshahi and Chittagong Kings in the 2024-25 season.”Capable professionals have been overlooked while loyalty and personal allegiance have been rewarded,” the letter read. “He is neither working for the development of Bangladesh cricket nor respecting the spirit of democratic governance.”One of the BCB directors told ESPNcricinfo that Faruque had ignored the rest of the board directors by delaying the formation of the new sub-committees. He said Faruque’s focus on running for the BCB elections later this year was another reason why they had lost confidence in him.Faruque said he was considering legal action after seeing the no-confidence letter signed by the directors. “I will speak to my lawyer about the letter. I might take legal action. There is no mention of no-confidence motion in the BCB constitution, so I don’t think it matters,” he told the Bengali daily . “I have seen the letter. They have accused me of wrongdoings that they have done themselves. I laughed out loud seeing the letter.”

Chelsea want ANOTHER wonderkid! Blues eye Nigeria U20 international ahead of January transfer window

Chelsea are pursuing the signature of Nigerian wonderkid Abduljelil Kamaldeen. The 16-year-old is currently representing his country at the U20 World Cup in Chile. Kamaldeen flashed his potential during a brief cameo in the Flying Eagles' 1-0 defeat against Norway on Monday; he is expected to start in Nigeria's next group stage game against Saudi Arabia tomorrow.

Chelsea view Kamaldeen as a priority for January transfer window

The Sun reports that the Blues have made Kamaldeen a high priority as they plan ahead for the January transfer window. Chelsea were first alerted to the Kwara Football Academy prospect after he excelled in the WAFU Zone B U20 Boys Cup held earlier this year in Ghana. Operating from the left wing throughout the tournament, Kamaldeen turned in game-changing performances in both the semi-finals and final, while also scoring a goal in a crucial 4-1 win over Benin.

Kamaldeen can also operate from a deeper central role, leading many keen observers to view him as a number 10 and eliciting comparisons to Nigerian legend Jay Jay Okocha and current Premier League star Alex Iwobi.

Despite entering the game as a late substitute, Kamaldeen found the time to make a lasting impression during Nigeria's narrow loss to Norway earlier this week. Facing players up to five years older than him, he almost rescued a point for the Flying Eagles with a late surge into the penalty area.

Chelsea have sent several scouts to Chile to track his progress. The Blues' global scouting network is particularly focused on youngsters playing above their age group, such as Kamaldeen.

Chelsea nurtuing young Nigerian stars

The Blues have recently acquired another young player of Nigerian heritage, snapping up 16-year-old striker Chizaram Ezenwata from Charlton Athletic. Ezenwata is eligible to represent the Flying Eagles, England and Cameroon. It is reported that Chelsea refused to allow him to report for international duty and star alongside Kamaldeen.

Showing out at a youth international tournament is often the quickest path to a career-defining move for young stars. Or, he could well trigger the interest of another premier European club.

More vital than Isak: Key Liverpool target now ready for medical in London

Liverpool so often wrap up all their business nice and early, so prudent are FSG. But not this time, deals have dragged over to the eleventh hour, but Red fans won’t care a jot.

After weeks of posturing, Newcastle United have finally opened the door for Liverpool to sign Alexander Isak in what will prove a British-record £130m deal, including £5m in solidarity figures.

Isak is one of the best strikers in the world, but Liverpool may yet seal a signature considered even more important for the fluency and stability of Arne Slot’s project.

Liverpool confident they will sign Premier League star

As per transfer reporter Ben Jacobs, Liverpool are growing in confidence that a deal can be pulled off for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who has entered the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park.

Though Liverpool have agreed personal terms with the England international and have the blessing of Palace chairman Steve Parish, Eagles first-team manager Oliver Glasner has been loath to let the star centre-back leave, and everything hinges on sufficient replacements being welcomed through the gates.

Liverpool have offices in London, and thus a medical will take place in the capital if the Merseysiders get the green light at this late hour. Palace are holding out for £40m and a deal is “expected to happen”.

Why Marc Guehi could make a bigger impact than Isak

Guehi, 25, has been at Crystal Palace for four years after leaving Chelsea for an £18m fee, failing to break into the Stamford Bridge senior side.

But no matter, he’s only gone from strength to strength since, captaining Palace to an incredible FA Cup triumph last year before beating Liverpool in last month’s Community Shield clash.

Crystal Palace'sMarcGuehilooks dejected.

Hailed as a “monster in defence” by Palace reporter Bobby Manzi, the £50k-per-week Guehi has so much quality, and he might even prove to be a better deal at this stage than Isak, who is going to cost FSG a pretty penny indeed.

Liverpool have started the current campaign imperiously from an attacking standpoint, and they were rather good in front of goal last term too.

The thought of adding Isak to the fold is frightening, to be sure, but given the fragilities of Ibrahima Konate over Liverpool’s opening fixtures in August, and then the Frenchman’s injury scare and ever-looming contractual expiry date at the end of the term, signing Guehi might actually prove to be the most important of the two deadline-day deals for Liverpool.

The England international showcased against Aston Villa on Sunday his aptitude on the ball, scoring a looping finish with the skill of a seasoned attacking midfielder.

And Sofascore record that he has also won 75% of his duels across his opening three matches of the Premier League term. Without a doubt, he has what it takes to become a superstar in Liverpool’s ranks, potentially succeeding Virgil van Dijk as the club’s standout defender over the coming years.

Liverpool have completed the most incredible of transfer windows, but despite all the flashy business at the front end of the field, Guehi might just prove to be the shrewdest and most impactful of the lot.

Man Utd reach agreement to post near £70m loss to get rid of "very good" player

Alejandro Garnacho’s Manchester United career is set to come to an end very soon, and the Red Devils have now reached an agreement over the exit of another out of form attacker.

Garnacho set to kickstart Man Utd summer sales

The future of Garnacho has been a talking point throughout the summer transfer window, with the Argentine more likely to leave after failing to fully impress Ruben Amorim.

It looks as though the winger is close to sealing a move to Premier League rivals Chelsea, with journalist Fabrizio Romano among those reporting that a deal is in place for the Blues to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

Garnacho may not be the only United player to depart between now and the end of deadline day, however, with Marcus Rashford already joining Barcelona on loan earlier in the window.

Now, a fresh update suggests that a different player will now be plying his trade away from United this season, with his exit seemingly edging closer all the time.

AC Milan reach £5m loan agreement for Hojlund

According to Gazzetta dello Sport [via Sport Witness], Manchester United have reached an agreement with AC Milan over a loan move for Ramus Hojlund. His agent, Kees Voos, has “sensed” that his client’s minutes would become limited after the arrival of Benjamin Sesko.

The clubs have now agreed a €6m (£5m) loan fee, which could be made into a permanent deal for around €30m (£26m) next summer. If it isn’t, INEOS will only recoup a tiny fraction of the £72m they shelled out on the Dane.

Rasmus Hojlund

Hojlund has ultimately been a big disappointment in a United shirt, having arrived with such a big reputation, despite Amorim praising him earlier this summer.

“We need goals. But the way he’s linking the play in this moment, the way he’s fighting for the balls, sometimes we are pressed, we can kick the ball, and he’s connecting the ball. That is so important for us to play better. So he’s doing a very good job.”

Hojlund has only scored 26 goals in 95 appearances for United, which is a poor return given the money spent on him, and it does make sense to loan him out for a season, potentially allowing him to regain some confidence.

Romano confirms "elite" Donnarumma alternative is on Man Utd transfer list

The Red Devils are looking to land an upgrade on Onana.

ByTom Cunningham Aug 8, 2025

Whether Milan take up the offer for a permanent move remains to be seen, but the 22-year-old has arguably had long enough to prove his worth for the Red Devils, and Sesko will hopefully be a significant upgrade on him.

Aston Villa keen on £21m international star but he's already in talks with Man City

Aston Villa have now been credited with an interest in signing a “world-class” £21 million ace who is already in talks with Manchester City.

Aston Villa line up replacements for Ollie Watkins

In recent weeks, Ollie Watkins’ name has been mentioned in regards to a move to Premier League rivals Manchester United. It’s been reported that the 29-year-old is considered a key target for Ruben Amorim, and Watkins himself is said to be keen on the move to Old Trafford.

Aston Villa "ready" to move for "special" £60m star with Emery a "big fan"

The Villans are poised to make an approach for a forward, who would jump at the opportunity to move to Villa Park.

ByDominic Lund Jul 21, 2025

Ideally, Villa would like to keep hold of the England international, but it has also been claimed that they have placed a £60 million price tag on Watkins’ head. Should the forward leave, Villa would need to find a suitable replacement, and according to recent reports, there are two names under consideration.

Sky Sports reporter Sacha Tavolieri revealed over the weekend that Villa could look to sign Paris Saint-Germain forward Randal Kolo Muani should Watkins depart Villa Park. The 26-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Juventus but has now returned to France, where it looks as though he has no future.

Villa are not the only team interested in Kolo Muani, as Manchester United and Newcastle are also keen and have held talks over a possible move.

Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson is also a target for the Villans, as Unai Emery is a big fan of the forward after the pair worked together at Villarreal. Jackson is said to be open to a move to Villa, as he would be interested in working with Emery once again.

Aston Villa keen on Denzel Dumfries despite Man City talks

But signing a new striker is not all that the Midlands side are focused on, as according to reports relayed by Birmingham Live, Aston Villa are interested in signing Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan.

The 29-year-old, who has been with the Serie A giants since 2021, signed a new contract in November last year, extending his stay until 2028. However, his new deal has a release clause worth €25 million, which is roughly £21 million, and that runs until the end of July.

Dumfries, who has been labelled “world-class” by renowned analytics company StatMuse, is weighing up his future, as he’s yet to settle on a permanent agent. The Dutch international has been linked with a move to Barcelona as a potential replacement for Jules Koundé, but perhaps more worryingly for Villa, Football Transfers reported earlier this month that Man City have held talks to sign Dumfries this summer, as the Blues are in the market for a new right-back.

He's their new Delap: Ipswich prioritising move to sign 25 y/o La Liga star

After welcoming veteran defender Ashley Young, Ipswich Town are now reportedly prioritising a summer swoop to sign a La Liga forward and welcome a much-needed replacement for Liam Delap.

McKenna: Young's "achievements speak for themselves"

At 39 years old, Young has made the latest move in a career that has seen him with the Premier League, Serie A, and become one of the most experienced players that English football has to offer. Dropping down to the Championship, the former Inter Milan man will be hoping to ensure that Ipswich complete an instant return to the Premier League.

Speaking to the club website after welcoming Young, Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna said: “Ashley has had a fantastic career and his achievements speak for themselves. He has maintained an extremely high level of professionalism and competitiveness through his career and he is still playing at a very good level.

“We feel his leadership and experience will be valuable to the group this season and he is very hungry to contribute on and off the pitch. It’s a very strong signing for the group and the club.”

The defender himself, meanwhile, also had plenty of praise for McKenna after putting pen to paper. He said: “He’s a winner and you see that on the training pitch.

Ipswich Town now in advanced talks to sign "strong" £10m star after Kipre

The Tractor Boys are set to commence their business.

ByTom Cunningham Jul 11, 2025

“On the sidelines at the games, I get to see that day in, day out. He was a massive pull. Obviously, I worked with him at [Manchester] United. I knew his beliefs, I knew what he wants to do with the club, I’ve seen what he’s done with this club as well.”

After adding crucial experience to their side, however, Ipswich’s summer business looks unlikely to end there. Reports are now suggesting that they’ve set their sights on a replacement for ex-star striker Delap.

Ipswich prioritising Romero move

According to reports in Spain, Ipswich are now prioritising a deal to sign Isaac Romero, who would be arriving to replace the departed Delap this summer. Sevilla are reportedly open to the forward’s departure, which should hand those at Portman Road the chance to come swooping in at the right price.

Romero Isaac in action for Sevilla.

The 25-year-old striker struggled to adapt to La Liga last season after scoring 11 goals in 15 games in Spain’s second tier in the campaign prior and could now be on his way out of the club.

If his agent’s eye for marketable talent is anything to go by he’s certainly got potential however – his AS1 group also represent £115m Chelsea star Moises Caicedo, Liverpool winger Luis Diaz and Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.

On paper, his arrival would be a risk for Ipswich but perhaps one worth taking. At his best, Romero starred in Spain’s second division and a return to a similar level may yet see him rediscover that clinical form.

Whilst Romero won’t steal the same headlines as Delap’s arrival did last summer, he could prove to be the clinical goalscorer that McKenna desperately needs in the Championship next season.
