Ex-England captains call for Joe Root to step down after West Indies defeat

Atherton, Hussain and Vaughan lead calls for change of leadership

Michael Atherton, Nasser Hussain and Michael Vaughan are among the ex-England captains who have called for Joe Root to be removed from his position after West Indies cruised to a ten-wicket win in Grenada to seal the Richards-Botham Trophy.England’s defeat on the Spice Isle was Root’s 26th in 64 Tests as captain since his appointment five years ago, meaning that only two men in Test history – Stephen Fleming (27) and Graeme Smith (29) – have overseen more defeats. While Root said he had “spoken quite enough on the subject” in his post-match press conference and insisted his side had made “big improvements” and played some “brilliant cricket” over the course of the series, several of his predecessors suggested that the decision should no longer be his to make.”Root’s captaincy is untenable, and he must surely know it deep down,” Atherton, who has consistently called for Root to step down since England’s defeat in the 2021-22 Ashes, wrote in his column. “His team have now gone five series without victory and have only won one Test in the past 17, a shocking run for a team so well resourced.”As was obvious to anyone who was present in Australia, and should have been obvious to anyone who wasn’t, Root has reached the end of the road as captain. A change will not cure all ills – this is a poor team and England are paying the price for the neglect of the first-class game – but there simply comes a time when a captain has nothing new to say, no new methods of motivating his players and a different voice or different style is required.”He had reached that point at the end of the Ashes and nothing has changed. It would have been a cleaner break to have finished then but that decision will now be for the new managing director, the date for applications for which closed on Sunday evening. How Root could feel he had the right to go on after Australia or how he could remain in situ while so many others with whom he shared responsibility were sacked, was a mystery, and remains so.”Related

Hussain, writing in the , said that the decision to leave James Anderson and Stuart Broad out of the squad had been “a cop out” and that Root – along with the interim selection panel of Andrew Strauss, Paul Collingwood and James Taylor – had selected a team of “yes men”.”Root is a world-class batsman and a very likeable lad but I feel he has never had that instinctive feel for the game as captain,” Hussain wrote. “Clearly, under Joe and Paul Collingwood in the West Indies, England tried to create this atmosphere where they were all mates and all in it together. They want to be a likeable team but you need more than that to win Tests.”Sometimes you need those tough characters even if they are difficult to captain and coach. It’s such a cop out to leave out people who are perhaps difficult to manage and pick a team of 10 yes men and yourself. The whole point of captaincy, and the aspect of the role I enjoyed the most, was trying to get the most out of people who did things differently.”England’s incoming managing director of men’s cricket will appoint a head coach and decide what to do with the captaincy before the start of their home summer against New Zealand on June 2, and Hussain suggested Ben Stokes should be offered the role.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“If Joe does not decide to step down himself the decision should be taken out of his hands,” he wrote. “Then the new coach should sit down with Ben Stokes and ask him where he is off the field mentally and where he is with his game. Ben seems to be playing with passion and fire again and if the coach likes what he hears from him then Stokes should get the job.”Vaughan, writing for the , said that Root’s captaincy “has not been good enough” and that “tactically, he consistently misses a trick”.”It happened in Grenada, it happened endlessly in Australia and many times last summer,” he wrote. “It has been a consistent trend that when England have been put under pressure on Joe’s watch they have not been able to cope. When they have to win an hour they lose it.”I knew in 2008 at the start of that summer that I would stand down. As England captain you just know when your race is run. Joe has to ask himself does he have the energy to drive himself for the next year and a half? Are the team listening? The evidence suggests not.”Ultimately we have to ask how much worse will England be if Joe Root is no longer the captain? What are we going to miss? We are not going to miss his runs because he will keep scoring those. Are we going to miss his tactics in the middle? No.”If he has the energy and a new coach can help him more than previous coaches then maybe he could bounce back but I’m not convinced.”

He’s like Saka: Arsenal actively chasing "one of the best in the world"

It has not been an easy ride for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side so far this season.

The Gunners have pushed Manchester City all the way in the title race over the last few years, but have not tasted any success as of yet. Now, in 2024/25, it seems like things could end up being a whole lot worse for the Red side of North London.

Sitting third in the Premier League, the Gunners sit six points behind league leaders Liverpool, who also have a game in hand. It is certainly a frustrating position for Arsenal to be in at Christmas time.

Arsenal's JakubKiwiorand Declan Rice celebrate after the match

With the January transfer window right around the corner, the Gunners could be eyeing some key reinforcements.

Arsenal target LaLiga winger

The man who the Gunners are believed to be targeting is one of the most in-form wingers in Europe, Barcelona star Raphinha. It may seem odd for Barca to sell such a key player under Hansi Flick, but with money issues still troubling the LaLiga giants, they could be left with no choice.

Barcelona star Raphinha.

According to a report from Graeme Bailey, the Gunners ‘enquired about Raphinha in the summer and they remain in contact with intermediaries’. Should there be the chance to strike a deal in the winter instead, they could pounce.

However, they will not be alone in their quest to sign the Brazilian. The report suggests that title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City are also interested in doing a deal, having shown a keenness to sign the winger last summer, too.

The article does not make it explicitly clear how much the winger could cost. However, the Catalan club spent £55m on him from Leeds, and a deal for a sale could be around a similar value. However, Barcelona seem certain they will not sell Raphinha yet.

How Raphinha compares to Bukayo Saka

Whether or not a deal to bring the winger in is achievable for Arsenal, there is no doubt that the 28-year-old would greatly enhance the quality of their side. He has been fantastic in 2024/24 so far for Barca, scoring 17 goals and grabbing ten assists in 23 games across competitions.

FC Barcelona'sRaphinha

The winger is absolutely flying in that famous Barca shirt this season. Incredibly, across Europe’s big five leagues, there are only four players with more goals and assists than him, according to FBref. Namely, they are teammate Robert Lewandowski with 18, Omar Marmoush and Harry Kane who both have 20 and Mohamed Salah who has 22.

One thing is for sure, Raphinha would be an upgrade on Gabriel Martinelli, at least based on their stats from this season. It has been a really disappointing season for the Brazilian so far, with just four goals and three assists in 22 games in all competitions.

He is averaging 0.31 goals and assists per game this term, compared to an impressive 1.17 for his international teammate. It could certainly be viewed as a big upgrade.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Although Martinelli is struggling for form, the same cannot be said for Bukayo Saka. Arsenal’s number seven has scored nine goals and has 12 assists in 22 games across competitions, and has received some big praise recently. Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, talking to BBC Sport’s Football Focus, said “the evolution of his game is outstanding”.

Interestingly, there can be a statistical comparison made between Raphinha and Saka via FBref. Both left-footed wide players, the pair have impressive creative passing stats this term. Per 90 minutes, the Brazil star averages 3.53 key passes, with the Arsenal winger averaging 3.04 key passes.

Not only would the Gunners be getting another player who can create chances, but someone who can fashion goalscoring opportunities from all sorts of scenarios. The Barca star averages 5.89 shot-creating actions and 0.96 goal-creating actions. That is slightly less than Saka, who averages 6.43 shot-creating actions and 1.52 goal-creating actions.

Signing Raphinha seems like a no-brainer if the deal is possible for Arsenal. He was once described as “one of the best players in the world” by former manager Xavi, and he certainly has the numbers to back that up. The Brazilian could be the man to come in and help drive the Gunners back up the table.

Throughout this second disappointing season at Old Trafford, Hojlund has struggled to get into games and assert himself against opposition defences. In 22 league appearances so far, the Dane has scored just two goals and not registered a single assist. He is yet to score this calendar year and time appears to be running out for the 22-year-old to make his mark at the Red Devils. His lack of goals can be partly explained by his lack of shots – he has taken just 13 shots (excluding blocks) in the league this season.

Ruben Amorim has pointed to a lack of chances being created, but by comparison, Bruno Fernandes leads United's shot count with 44, while Mohamed Salah is top of the Premier League standings with 84. Other centre-forwards, including Raul Jimenez, Ollie Watkins and Nicolas Jackson all have over 50 each, while Alexander Isak, Yoane Wissa and Kai Havertz have over 40 each. Even the likes of Virgil van Dijk (17), Wilfred Ndidi (17), Casemiro (16), Fabian Schar (16) and Gabriel Magalhaes (15) have more, while another United team-mate, Matthijs de Ligt, has attempted the same amount (13).

Hojlund joined the club in the summer of 2023 for a reported £72 million ($92m) from Serie A side Atalanta. Despite fans expecting an immediate impact from the big-money signing, the Dane took time to finally score his first goal and has struggled to lead the line effectively. Even under the guidance of a new boss in Ruben Amorim, Hojlund has looked out of place as the sole number nine in Amorim’s 3-4-3 system. His failure to improve this season is underscored further by the bleak statistic.

United are reportedly already considering replacing Hojlund in the next transfer window. It's ben rumoured that the Red Devils are plotting a move for Napoli's exiled striker Victor Osimhen, currently on-loan at Turkish giants Galatasaray, and believe they need an upgrade on the Dane if they are to surge back up the Premier League. Amorim has suggested his players' struggles are partly due to their own mindset and Hojlund has serious work to do if he is to regain confidence in front of goal and take more shots.

How Lopetegui is frustrating crucial West Ham figures and creating problems

A report this week has shared how West Ham United manager Julen Lopetegui is frustrating “crucial figures” at the club and creating problems, with the 58-year-old’s future hanging in the balance.

Lopetegui facing West Ham sack with Everton game crucial

Some foreign reports have claimed that Lopetegui’s dismissal as West Ham boss is inevitable, as technical director Tim Steidten targets the likes of ex-Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic and former Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri, but this isn’t the consensus among national media.

West Ham considering "magnificent" Terzic alternative to replace Lopetegui

ByEmilio Galantini Nov 6, 2024

The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg shared an in-depth update on Lopetegui’s future on Wednesday, suggesting the Spaniard faces a review of his position if West Ham fail to beat lowly Everton in the Premier League this weekend.

West Ham apparently still hope that Lopetegui can turn the club’s fortunes around, but it is believed those within the east London club are quite shocked to be 14th in the table with just three wins from their opening 10 games, especially after spending over £120 million in the summer transfer window.

While Lopetegui’s departure is by no means a certainty, defeat to the Toffees will be a hammer blow for the tactician regarding his future, with majority shareholder David Sullivan and co holding internal discussions over alternatives.

As per Steinberg, West Ham have conducted “background checks” on Sebastian Hoeness (Stuttgart), Kasper Hjulmand (ex-Denmark) and former Benfica boss Roger Schmidt.

The dressing room could have a big say as well, with other reports claiming that “several” senior West Ham players aren’t fully on board with Lopetegui.

How Lopetegui is frustrating "crucial" West Ham figures

Now, GiveMeSport have shared how Lopetegui is frustrating “crucial” West Ham figures and causing unrest at Rush Green.

Indeed, it is believed that the former Spain and Real Madrid manager’s late U-turns over match-day decisions is prompting upset – while leaked information regarding a row with Mohammed Kudus hasn’t exactly helped matters either.

Those within West Ham’s squad are also doubting his leadership qualities, as well as his tactical choices, so it appears there is quite a bit of concern surrounding whether Lopetegui is the right man to take them forward.

The ex-Wolves head coach has an enormous task on his hands in getting both players and club officials back on side, but a winning run could do wonders as Lopetegui aims to garner consistency from his very new squad.

The La Liga chief did not mince his words while launching a scathing attack on Madrid president Florentino Perez, who spearheaded the idea of creating the European Super League in 2021. Tebas described the idea as financially unviable and labelled the ESL a "circus".

AdvertisementWHAT JAVIER TEBAS SAID

Speaking to , Tebas said: "The first thing is to make it very clear who is behind it, which it seems that they never want to say: it is Florentino Perez. We have to show our faces. The second thing, it is not serious that we have three formats in three years. We cannot be talking about saving football, as president Perez said, and doing this. It is also very unserious to present a format that does not talk about governance. Or the television model: one day everything is free, another day it’s hybrid, another day I don’t know what it’s like. This looks like a circus.

"It is very serious. If it were viable, which is not viable. That hurts because imagine: during the week, free football. And at the weekend, the national league, paid football? Do you think that free football for all would be viable in Spain? Isn’t it? I’m sure it does devastating damage. More than saving football, that mission that it seems Real Madrid came to destroy it."

AFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The ESL saga began in April 2021 when 12 prominent football clubs, including Premier League giants Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham, announced their plans to form a breakaway league. The announcement sparked widespread outrage among fans and government officials, leading to the collapse of the plan within just 72 hours. Since then, ten of the 12 clubs that initially backed the controversial project have withdrawn, issued apologies, and returned to UEFA's fold. However, Real Madrid and Barcelona remain steadfast in their pursuit of making the league a reality and have insisted that they will “keep working on the execution of the idea”.
