He’ll revive Odegaard: Arsenal want to sign "monster" £59m Havertz upgrade

The last week or so has been nothing short of a disaster for Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s side first dropped points away to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League, then lost the first leg of their League Cup semi-final 2-0 to Newcastle United and then, to round things off, they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United, despite having a man advantage.

There have been poor performances from across the entire squad in the last few games, but it’s hard to ignore, particularly last night and during the week, the dire displays of club captain Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz.

The Norwegian has looked a shadow of himself in recent weeks and missed a penalty in normal time against United, while the former Chelsea man missed a mountain of chances in both cup defeats, so recent reports linking the club to a player who could replace the latter and revive the former shouldn’t come as much of a shock.

Arsenal continue their striker search

According to a recent report from the Independent’s Chief Football Writer, Miguel Delaney, Arsenal want to sign RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško.

The report does not mention a price, but a story from last month claimed that the German club would demand at least €70m for their star attacker, which comes to about £59m.

However, while that isn’t an egregiously high price tag for a promising forward in the modern game, Delaney also claims that the board would ‘rather spend in the summer.’

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

That said, with the club’s season hanging by the smallest of threads, they might have to take the leap and spend more than they want to this month, as not only would Šeško be an upgrade on Havertz, but he could also revive Odegaard.

How Šeško would make Arsenal better

So, if Arsenal were to stump up the cash needed and bring Šeško to the Emirates this month, he’d be in direct competition with Havertz for a starting place up top, and from how they have performed this year, we reckon it’s a competition he’d win.

For example, in 24 appearances this season, totalling just 1683 minutes, the Slovenian “monster,” as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored 12 goals and provided three assists, meaning he’s currently averaging a goal involvement every 1.6 games, or every 112.2 minutes.

Whereas while the Gunners’ number 29 has scored and assisted as many goals this season, he has done so in 27 appearances, totalling 2232 minutes, which comes out to a goal involvement every 1.8 games, or one every 148.8 minutes, which is a significant point of difference.

In fact, it’s this difference that could see him help get the best back out of Odegaard, as despite being some way off his mercurial best in yesterday’s game, the Norwegian still created two big chances for his teammates, suggesting that with a more clinical forward ahead of him, he’d start chalking up assists for the team.

We can see that the Leipzig ace is a far better finisher through Understat’s underlying numbers, as according to them, he has scored seven league goals this season from an expected goals figure of just 4.61 and was even more effective last season when he scored 14 league goals from an expected goals figure of 8.60.

In contrast, the former Chelsea man has scored as many league goals this season, but from an expected goals number of 9.46 and, while he was a little less wasteful last season, he still underperformed, scoring 13 goals from an expected tally of 13.47.

Ultimately, Havertz has been a useful player for Arsenal over the last year and a half, but it is now undeniable that he’s a poor finisher, and as the numbers suggest, the opposite is true for Šeško.

So, if Arteta and Co want to improve their attack and help get more out of the chief creator in Odegaard, then signing the Leipzig star this month would be a great start.

Ganguly says Kohli 'has to find his way' to score again; Nehra wants him to take a break

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly believes Virat Kohli “has got to find his way” to score runs again, while former India quick Ashish Nehra, who worked with Kohli at Royal Challengers Bangalore, says there is no harm in him taking a break to come back fresh later.Kohli has already been rested for the ODIs and T20Is in West Indies, which means he will be out of action for nearly a month.”Yes, he has had a tough time and he knows that,” Ganguly told ANI. “He himself knows by his own standards it has not been good and I see him coming back and doing well. But he has got to find his way and become successful, which he has been for the last 12-13 years or more and only Virat Kohli can do that.Related

  • Problem of plenty: How do India fit Kohli in their T20I XI?

“These things will happen in sport. It has happened to everybody. It has happened to Sachin [Tendulkar], it has happened to Rahul [Dravid], it has happened to me, it has happened to Kohli. It is going to happen to future players. That’s part and parcel of sport and I think as a sportsman you just need to listen, be aware of what it is, and just go and play your game.”Kohli has been in a lean patch across formats in the last few years, with his last international century coming in November 2019. After a below-par run in IPL 2022, he scored 11 and 20 in the Edgbaston Test earlier this month, followed by 1 and 11 in the second and third T20Is against England. A minor groin strain ruled him out of the first ODI and it’s unclear whether he will play the second match on Thursday.Recently, former India captain Kapil Dev added to the growing chorus questioning Kohli’s place in India’s T20I XI, especially with a number of in-form players fighting for a place in the squad. Nehra said Kohli should keep such discussions out of his head and only focus on his game.”When you are not performing, there will be discussions even if you’re not a player of Kohli’s calibre,” Nehra said in a virtual interaction for Sony Sports Network. “When you are doing broadcasting, newspaper, it is being printed every day and when you are playing, you try to focus on your game and not listen to so-called outside voices from people outside the dressing room. It is important how you are in the dressing room and how your team-mates, management and selectors are backing you. We are talking about a guy like Virat. Yes, it is not written anywhere that Virat Kohli will keep playing for India even if he doesn’t score runs. That will not happen, but when you have done so much in the past, you will always get extra chances.”While many former players, including former India coach Ravi Shastri, suggested Kohli needed a break from cricket, Kohli said he could take some time off to rejuvenate himself. He was rested for the first T20I against England following the Edgbaston Test and will not be part of the limited-overs series in West Indies from July 22.Nehra agreed a break was much needed and hoped to see a “different Virat Kohli” turning up for the Asia Cup.”Everybody knows what you have done and the talent you have. At the age of 33-34, fitness isn’t a problem for him. Everybody is hopeful that Virat Kohli will come good, the quicker the better. Let’s hope we see a different Virat after the West Indies series. If he rests for a month or five weeks, it will be helpful for him and any player will be under pressure if you do not score runs, especially the kind of player Virat has been. It has not been just 1-2 series, it has been, you can say 12 months.”Rest is not a bad thing, you just played the IPL and then you played the Test, white-ball cricket, so it is good to see that Virat is getting a break. A break does not mean one week break or a three-day break. When you come back to Asia Cup, you come back fresh.”From closer quarters, India offspinner R Ashwin said Kohli has been “batting beautifully” in the last few years despite what the numbers say, calling his energy on the field “infectious”.”The more he is in the game and the more and more charged up he is, he bats so much more better,” Ashwin said on podcast. “And I believe even for the last two and a half or whatever considerable period of time, even though he might not have got the hundreds, I still believe he’s batting beautifully. The way he’s batting it looks like he’s probably got a double-hundred in the last one. It sometimes can happen, as a batter or as a cricketer you might be bowling well but the wickets are taken by somebody else.”His energy is very infectious. Sometimes bowling in India – like recently we had a couple of Test matches I can’t remember exactly – he wasn’t playing those games and I actually missed him on the field. The kind of energy that he brings to the table. The man standing at short midwicket, stopping those singles, looking for those catches … that’s exactly what makes him. He loves that, and when he does that he definitely bats better as well, and that’s my view of him.”

Arsenal chasing £159k-p/w Havertz upgrade who’s "even better than Haaland"

One of the biggest areas in the Arsenal squad with a frustrating lack of depth is at centre-forward. The Gunners have two main options who they can rely on, Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz. However, there are arguments that neither are clinical enough to lead their line, with six and 12 goals each respectively this season.

Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton, now a pundit, suggested that back in November. He explained that there is an “argument that you need a goalscorer, a natural finisher” to complement the existing options.

The Gunners have actually been linked with one player who could be the answer to their problems.

Arsenal target new striker

The player in question here is Nigeria international striker Victor Osimhen. The 25-year-old has once again impressed this season and is currently on loan at Turkish club Galatasaray, from parent side Napoli.

According to a report from Football Insider, Arsenal are believed to be ‘monitoring’ the striker ahead of a potential ‘box office’ January move. They are likely to face competition for Osimhen, with Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea thought to be interested.

According to Spanish reports via Football365, the £159k-per-week Nigerian striker has a release clause which is thought to be worth around £63m. If that is activated, it will see him leave Galatasaray mid-season.

Why Osimhen would be a good signing

Should the Gunners bring the striker to the club in January, it would certainly see the purchase of a man capable of finding the net. The Nigerian has been on fire in 2024/25, with 12 goals in 15 games across all competitions, as well as five assists.

The 25-year-old has also been superb for Napoli in previous seasons. In 133 games for the Serie A giants, he scored an impressive 76 goals.

His best campaign in terms of goalscoring was in 2022/23 when Gli Azzurri lifted the Scudetto. The Nigerian scored 31 goals in 39 games to help his side win a famous title.

Indeed, signing Osimhen could certainly be an upgrade on Havertz at centre-forward. That is not because the German is a bad player, but he is not necessarily a natural striker.

Mikel Arteta explained such a thing last season when the former Chelsea man signed, saying that “he’ll be used in different positions” in a Gunners shirt.

Kai Havertz celebrates for Arsenal

He did not perform badly in front of goal last term. The 25-year-old scored 13 goals and grabbed seven assists in 37 appearances in the top flight.

That is certainly not a bad record, but given he was leading the line for Arsenal, it left a lot to be desired.

Indeed, the gap between the Arsenal number 29 and the on-loan Napoli striker is clear to see. That goes for both the goalscoring numbers and the statistical comparison when looking at Havertz’s Premier League stats from last season and Osimhen’s from the 2022/23 Serie A campaign.

According to Squawka, the 25-year-old striker averaged 0.9 non-penalty goals per game. Crucially, he also averaged one goal inside the box per 90 minutes, exactly the presence Arsenal have been missing. In comparison, the German attacker averaged 0.5 non-penalty goals and 0.5 goals from inside the box per game.

The difference between the two is clear, and whilst Havertz is a good footballer, he is not necessarily an out-and-out number nine. Osimhen, however, is a fantastic goalscorer, especially in the box, and could be the man the Gunners have missed.

Agent Andrea D’Amico once described the 25-year-old as “the best striker in the world”, comparing him to Manchester City striker Erling Haaland. He even called him “even better than Haaland”, which is high praise for Osimhen.

Whilst £63m is a lot of money in a January window, it could be a smart investment for the Gunners. They would be bringing in a striker who knows where the back of the net is and could be a player to spur them on as they look to push Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.

Rangers make contact about signing 6ft 1 defender who may replace Balogun

Rangers have now enquired about signing a new defender for Philippe Clement as they look to refresh a squad that has struggled this season, according to a new report.

Rangers season so far

Penalty heartbreak in the Scottish League Cup final at the hands of bitter rivals Celtic over the weekend was the latest problematic result for Clement’s side in a season that has not gone to plan.

After battling back gamely to level at 3-3 and take the tie to extra time and penalties, the Ibrox side lost out as Kasper Schmeichel saved Ridvan Yilmaz’s penalty in what was the only miss of the shootout, to help ensure Celtic claimed the trophy.

Rangers have undoubtedly improved since their slow start to the season, but remain a mammoth 11 points off the pace in the Scottish Premiership after losing three times in the opening weeks of the season.

With that title dream likely over, and the League Cup also no longer on the table, the Scottish Cup and Europa League are arguably all that the Gers have left to play for this season, and it is in Europe that they have impressed.

Currently sitting eighth with two games left to play, they have lost just once and held Tottenham to a credible 1-1 draw in their most recent outing, leaving them in a strong spot to qualify for the knockout rounds. Now though, attention is seemingly turning towards future transfers in 2025.

Rangers enquire about signing new defender

That is according to a report coming out of Morocco, which claims that Rangers have lodged an enquiry to sign 24-year-old defender Hatim Essaouabi ahead of next summer’s transfer window.

A 6ft 1 centre-back, Essaouabi currently plies his trade for Moroccan champions FAR Rabat, the same side that Rangers plucked Hamza Igamane from in the most recent summer transfer window.

Now, their scouts have been “impressed” by his former teammate and compatriot Essaouabi, and the report claims that the Scottish giants are now “seriously considering recruiting him during the next summer transfer window”.

Rangers have an "unbelievable" star who could now be their next big sale

Rangers could strike gold with this Ibrox star after some fine displays in 2024/25.

ByBen Gray Dec 17, 2024

Though the club signed Robin Propper over the summer, Rangers are still light at centre-back, with Leon King and Clinton Nsiala both young and inexperienced, while Leon Balogun will turn 37 years old at the end of the season and is due to see his contract at Ibrox expire, meaning that Rangers may need to add another option in the heart of defence.

Leon Balogun

Essaouabi could prove a logical replacement, with the defender unlikely to be an expensive signing and, given that he is just 24 years old, approaching the peak of his career but with over a decade likely still ahead of him.

No mention of price tag or Essaouabi’s own desires are made in the report, but Rangers already have a link through Igamane and could return next summer to use the same formula once more to upgrade their defence.

Romario Shepherd has IPL in his sights after death-hitting heroics

Allrounder hopes late fireworks in Bridgetown can turn heads ahead of mega-auction

Matt Roller24-Jan-2022

Romario Shepherd gave England a scare in the second T20I•Getty Images

Just like anyone else, IPL owners, head coaches and general managers are afflicted by recency bias. Whenever the time comes to sit down at the auction table, performances that are fresh in the memory are given greater weighting than those that happened several months previously. It is no surprise, given their usual windows in the calendar, that players who have performed well in the most recent Big Bash season tend to be popular at IPL auctions, regardless of the difference in standard and conditions. It is a widespread, long-standing cognitive bias – and one that cricketers themselves are fully aware of.In that light, England and West Indies’ players know that they are not only competing for a series win and for long-term retention in their respective XIs in Barbados this week, but also for a bigger bid at the auction. And with a dearth of seam-bowling allrounders available in the auction longlist – Sam Curran, Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes all opted out, while Chris Morris recently announced his retirement – Romario Shepherd’s fireworks on Sunday night have done his chances of a deal no harm at all.Shepherd hit 44 not out from 28 balls from No. 7 to take West Indies within one run of England’s total, adding 72 off 29 in an unbroken ninth-wicket stand with Akeal Hosein to add a sense of jeopardy to what had looked like a cruise to victory. Thirty of his runs came in sixes, including two over the longer leg-side boundary off Chris Jordan and one off Liam Dawson that cleared the Garfield Sobers Pavilion.”I try to focus on what is at hand right now and try and put my all in here,” Shepherd, who has entered February’s auction with an Rs. 75 lakh ($100,000 USD approx.) base price, said. “Eventually, if an IPL contract comes, that would be great for me. I’m not saying that I don’t think about it – I do think about it, but I try not to think about it during a game, I just focus on wherever the game is and trying to get ourselves out of a situation.”It’s a great platform. For any youngster, it’s their dream to go to the IPL and I’m no different. I’m trying my best to get myself in there, but at the same time trying to win a series here. It’s something that I’ve dreamed about for a very long time. My name was in the [auction] for the last three years, so this year, I’m looking forward to it.”Related

Shepherd had struggled early on in his innings, scoring only one single from his first seven balls and failing to pick Adil Rashid out of the hand, but immediately targeted Dawson when he came on to bowl the 13th over. He was one of only a handful of batters to clear the longer boundary – around 90 metres towards midwicket – and his clean hitting left England hanging on by their fingertips.”When I went out, the coach told me to take a few balls,” he explained. “Then when I got out there the ball was spinning and Rashid got me. I was like one off six balls, one off seven balls, so I was kind of on the back foot.”When I saw Liam come on for his first over, I said to myself I would try and take him down. I hit him for two sixes in that over so that gave me a push-start there. Eventually I started flowing better at the crease.”It plays with your mind to see that one side is very short and one side is very long. Eventually when Jordan came in that over, I had no choice but to try and take on the long boundary. I know as long as I hit them well, the boundary don’t matter.”Hosein hit three fours and two sixes off Saqib Mahmood’s final over to keep the game tense until the final ball, but was aggrieved that Mahmood’s first legitimate ball was not given as a wide, having appeared to reach him past the tramline. But Shepherd said that Joel Wilson, the umpire, was “only human” and that West Indies were more concerned about a sloppy night in the field than his decision-making.”I told Akeal: ‘don’t worry about it, you can hit the next couple for six and he can bowl a no-ball or another wide,'” Shepherd said. “The umpire missed that one, but he’s just human – hopefully he can correct his mistake in the upcoming games. I think that was a wide but he didn’t think so.”Yesterday was a total off-day: we didn’t field well, we didn’t catch well. Those are some of the little things that [cost] us last night: we could have got them down to less than 170 but we fielded poorly.”Reacting to the contest’s unexpected ending, England’s player-of-the-match Moeen Ali admitted that the power in West Indies’ batting line-up was “very scary”, and Shepherd agreed with the sentiment.”It must be frightening for other teams to know that our No. 10 batsman can do that,” he said. “For us, it’s a very big confidence booster for us to know that we bat this deep. We showed how well we can bat and we can get ourselves out of a situation from nowhere.”We just need to focus a little more on the powerplay and the middle phase, because the back end will take care of itself. We have a lot of power at the back end. We have to continue to work and hopefully we can pull off something special and win this series.”

Axar Patel five-for skittles New Zealand out for 296 as India take lead

Stumps Axar Patel’s dream start to his Test career continued as the left-arm spinner picked up a fifth five-wicket haul in his fourth Test to help India bowl New Zealand out for 296 and take a first-innings lead of 49. On a Kanpur pitch where the ball was keeping low from time to time, Axar reaped the benefit of targeting the stumps and finished with figures of 5 for 62.

The Indian openers needed to survive five overs before the close of play. Kyle Jamieson, though, rattled Shubman Gill’s stumps with the first ball of the second over and reached 50 wickets in only his ninth Test. In doing so, he bettered Shane Bond’s New Zealand record by three matches. The overall record belongs to Charlie Turner of Australia, who took his 50th wicket in his sixth Test.Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara took India to stumps, extending their lead to 63.In the morning, Tom Latham and Will Young resumed for New Zealand in the same resolute manner they displayed on the second day, and stretched their opening stand to 151. But once that partnership was broken, the visitors lost their next nine wickets for 99 runs.Axar had a big hand in that collapse. Bowling with the second new ball in the afternoon session, he dismissed Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls and Latham while conceding only 14 runs in an 11-over spell as New Zealand slipped from 214 for 2 to 227 for 5.Taylor, who is playing his first international match since the World Test Championship final in June, had a slice of luck early on when he came down the track to Axar only to inside-edge the ball between his legs. But KS Bharat, substituting for Wriddhiman Saha who has a stiff neck, failed to latch on to it.Axar, though, wasn’t to be denied for long. A few overs later, he drew Taylor’s outside edge and Bharat didn’t make any mistake this time. In his next over, he had Nicholls lbw as the batter missed the slog sweep. Nicholls reviewed the decision, hoping the impact would be outside the off stump, but it turned out to be umpire’s call.As wickets fell at one end, Latham inched towards his hundred at the other. He was on 95 when he stepped out to Axar only for the ball to turn, bounce and hit him on the gloves, and bounce towards the wicketkeeper. Bharat collected it and broke the stumps with Latham stranded a fair way down. After tea, Axar returned to end Tom Blundell’s resistance with a delivery that scooted underneath the bat and clattered into the stumps. Blundell consumed 94 balls for his 13. Tim Southee became his fifth wicket, bowled while playing for the angle and the ball holding its line.Axar Patel shows off the ball after he returned a five-wicket haul•BCCI

Jamieson worked hard to take New Zealand closer to India’s first-innings total but holed out in deep for 23 while trying to take on R Ashwin. The last pair frustrated India for a while before Ashwin bowled William Somerville, who fought for 52 balls for 6 runs, to wrap up the innings.India had started the day with their two most experienced bowlers, Ishant Sharma and Ashwin. Young and Latham didn’t find it easy to score against them, though Young skipped down the track against Ashwin a couple of times, hitting him over mid-on for four on one occasion. But, otherwise, both batters were forced to wait for the rare loose delivery.Luck too seemed to be on New Zealand’s side. Ishant and Ashwin drew the outside edges of Young and Latham respectively, and while Young’s went for four through the gap between wide slip and gully, Latham’s fell short of Ajinkya Rahane at first slip. With the breakthrough still elusive, Ashwin switched from around the wicket to over the wicket. The move worked as he had Young edging one behind on 89, with Bharat taking an excellent catch staying low.Ashwin could have had Latham too. The bowler did everything right: tossed the ball up, got it to spin past the outside edge and hit the batter on the pad. Umpire Nitin Menon, though, turned down the vociferous appeal for lbw and India chose not to review. Replays showed Latham would have been on his way back had they done so. He was on 66 then.A little later, Menon and Ashwin were involved in what seemed like a chat about Ashwin’s follow-through. When bowling from around the wicket, the offspinner was delivering from close to the stumps and then moving across towards the left-hander’s leg side to avoid stepping on to the danger area. In the process, he seemed to be obstructing the umpire’s view and that of the non-striker too. India’s coach Rahul Dravid, too, was seen making a visit to match referee Javagal Srinath’s room.Kane Williamson had walked in with three men around the bat, and after a few watchful moments, struck two fours in Jadeja’s one over. But in the last over before lunch, Umesh Yadav got one to nip back with the second new ball and pinged Williamson on the back leg. The New Zealand captain decided to review the lbw decision, but replays showed the ball would have hit the top of middle stump.

>Ano novo, vida nova!
