CR7 now plying his trade in Saudi ArabiaThree Lions star shining for Real MadridBid for continental glory opens this summerWHAT HAPPENED?

A bid for continental glory on German soil is due to get underway on June 14, with Italy aiming to defend the crown that they captured at Wembley Stadium back in 2021. There will be plenty of superstar performers on show, with evergreen Portuguese forward Ronaldo still going strong at 39 years of age.

Ronaldo has been impressing in the Saudi Pro League this season, passing the 40-goal mark once again, but former Real Madrid and Juventus boss Capello has said of question marks over the five-time Ballon d’Or winner: “There are two players who make the difference, Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe. And we will have to see how the year in Arabia has been for Cristiano.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Capello, who led England to the 2010 World Cup, considers the Three Lions to be favourites for Euros glory, with Real Madrid sensation Bellingham leading the way. He added on seeing the 20-year-old midfielder make a stunning impact in his debut season at Santiago Bernabeu: “It is a surprise that an Englishman has triumphed so soon in La Liga.”

Bellingham has registered 21 goals for the Blancos this season, including a dramatic winner in a Clasico clash with Barcelona last time out, and is expected to be joined by France international Mbappe in the summer transfer window when he reaches the end of his contract at Paris Saint-Germain and becomes a free agent.

Derby now plotting move to sign "phenomenal" left-footed player for Warne

Derby County are believed to be plotting a move to sign a "phenomenal" player for Paul Warne, according to a fresh transfer update.

Derby eyeing January signings

The Rams have made a promising start to the 2023/24 season, currently sitting seventh in the League One table ahead of the festive action in the coming weeks. Granted, Derby could be in a better position towards the automatic promotion positions where Portsmouth and Oxford United currently are, but they are nicely poised to finish in the playoff places, hopefully making their way back into the Championship next year.

The January transfer window will allow Warne the chance to add to his squad, should the money and right targets be available, and the Rams have been linked with a number of players in recent weeks. Young Irish midfielder Adam Murphy is one player who has been backed to move to Derby, being seen as a long-term acquisition, while AFC Wimbledon's Ali Al-Hamadi is also seen as an option for the Rams. It looks as though another player has now joined the list of potential additions at Pride Park in January, with a fellow League One ace tipped to head there.

Derby want to sign CJ Hamilton

According to Football Insider, Derby are one of the clubs interested in signing Blackpool winger CJ Hamilton, with the Rams "plotting a move" for him.

Derby County manager Paul Warne.

Huddersfield Town and Queens Park Rangers are also seen as potential suitors for the 28-year-old wide man, who is out of contract at his current club at the end of this season. That means Blackpool could jump at the chance to earn a fee for him in January, rather than lose him on a free transfer next summer.

It is claimed that "Derby are keen to strengthen in the new year to boost their promotion bid", with numerous clubs "ready to test Blackpool's resolve". Derby may not find it easy to bring in Hamilton in January, considering there is interest from clubs higher up in the Football League currently, but he could be such a shrewd addition if they get a deal over the line.

This season, the Rams transfer target has four assists in League One so far this season, highlighting the creativity he can provide from out wide and at 28 years of age, he is someone with lots of experience, not to mention being a left-footed player who can play on either flank, which could appeal to Warne.

Hamilton has even earned huge praise from former Mansfield Town manager David Flitcroft in the past during their time at the club together, saying of him:

"I can play him anywhere and he is phenomenal. He's had another match-winning day today. Winning goals are the ones you remember."

Derby may need an extra injection of attacking quality in their squad to further enhance their hopes of going up to the Championship this season, and in Hamilton, they could have a perfect option to bring in. An overall tally of 24 goals and 34 assists combined in the Championship, League One and League Two combined further outlines why he could be a smart signing.

Crystal Palace make contact to sign £50m forward with “frightening pace”

Crystal Palace have now made contact over a deal for a £50m forward with “frightening pace”, having expressed strong interest in securing his signature.

Palace keen to bolster attacking options

Palace are flying high in the Premier League, and remain real contenders to qualify for Europe, but their Europa Conference League campaign has been a bit more mixed, suffering disappointing defeats against AEK Larnaca and Strasbourg.

Speaking after the loss against the French side at the end of November, manager Oliver Glasner made it clear he wants to bolster his attacking options during the upcoming transfer window, saying: “We have to support the players. This is what we will do. It’s the only thing we will do, support them, encourage them, stay positive. The second thing [to improve in attack] is to buy a player in January.”

Glasner’s interest in strengthening his forward line comes amid doubts over Jean-Philippe Mateta’s future at Selhurst Park, with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly set to make a bid for the Frenchman, who has seven goals to his name in the Premier League so far this season.

As such, Palace may have to think about bringing in a new striker soon, and they also hold a strong interest in signing versatile Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson, who is capable of playing at centre-forward and on both wings.

That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, which states the Eagles have now made informal contact over a deal for the Welshman, alongside two other unnamed Premier League clubs, with Spurs now strongly considering a sale.

Currently, the north Londoners value Johnson at £50m, but there is a feeling they would be willing to sanction a departure for a slightly lower fee, with his inconsistent performances frustrating Thomas Frank.

Johnson could be statement signing for Palace

It is somewhat surprising Spurs are considering offloading the Wales international, given that he has regularly provided goals and assists since arriving from Nottingham Forest back in 2023.

The 24-year-old was also key to Tottenham ending their long wait for a trophy last season, scoring the winning goal as his side overcame Manchester United in the Europa League final.

HLTCO has also waxed lyrical about the former Nottingham Forest man in the past, taking to X to praise his speed during the 2023-24 campaign.

Johnson could be a statement signing for Crystal Palace, as they look to transform from a mid-table side into consistent challengers for Europe.

Uncapped Tahir, Wallace named in Scotland squad

Twenty-two-year-old uncapped left-arm spinner Hamza Tahir and wicketkeeper-batsman Craig Wallace have been picked in Scotland’s squad for the two-match T20I series against Pakistan and the subsequent T20I tri-series, also involving Netherlands and Ireland.Tahir is the cousin of Majid Haq, who has played 75 internationals. His inclusion in place of batsman Michael Jones is the only other change from the ODI squad that will face England in a solitary match on Sunday.Preston Mommsen, who had returned from retirement last summer against Namibia and Zimbabwe, and was included for the ODI against England, does not find the place in the T20I squad. Two years ago Mommsen announced his retirement after being offered a property management job. At the time, he said the lack of fixtures Scotland influenced his decision to take up the opportunity.”This will be a huge occasion, not only for the playing squad, but for the Cricket Scotland organisation as a whole,” Kyle Coetzer, the Scotland captain, said. “To be hosting the two number one team’s in 50-over and 20-over formats in a few days is not something that comes around every day.”We need to make sure we are willing to soak up the special day and not be afraid to grab the game with our exciting, expressive style.”The T20 series against Pakistan begins at Grange cricket club in Edinburgh on June 12, two days after the ODI against England at the same venue. Scotland will then travel to Netherlands for the T20I tri-series.Squad: Kyle Coetzer (capt), Richie Berrington (vice-capt), Dylan Budge, Matthew Cross, Alasdair Evans, Craig Wallace (wk), Michael Leask, Calum MacLeod, Hamza Tahir, George Munsey, Safyaan Sharif, Chris Sole, Mark Watt, Brad Wheal, Stuart Whittingham

Arsenal: Wenger signing was named Fabregas 2.0, now he’s playing Dutch 2nd-tier

The idea of a footballing heir is a weighty subject. It can make or break characters, whether, for instance, it be Dan Crowley's Jack Wilshere comparison at Arsenal, perhaps even Jordan Rossiter's stray Steven Gerrard comparison, or Jude Bellingham striding across the Bernabéu pitch with Zidane's infamous number five worn comfortably on his back. It's certainly a daunting hurdle that gifted youngsters approach at the highest level.

Unfortunately for this article's subject, this player finds himself on the Crowley and Rossiter end of the spectrum when it comes to fulfilling his potential as the next Cesc Fabregas at the Emirates Stadium.

Who was the next Fabregas?

After consistent world-class showings for both club and country, Cesc Fabregas' Arsenal spell ended with a transfer to Barcelona in 2011. The World Cup winner's figurative shoes were likely a size too big to fill on the face of it. A size that would make the average player innumerate, given the midfielder's growth into one of the finest playmakers around.

You don't replace a Fabregas with a snap of the fingers. You don't replace him with a youth player either – unless that star quality is glaringly bright, lapping at the heels of the first team.

Yet, while Arsene Wenger looked over a group of players under his employ, a glint caught his seasoned eye. It danced in the shadowed slot where Fabregas, as well as an also-departing Samir Nasri, once lived. That spec of light was Gedion Zelalem.

How did Gedion Zelalem come onto the scene?

Zelalem seemed like a gifted footballer who developed exponentially despite a certain time of adversity. Born in Berlin to Ethiopian parents, the tragedy of his mother's death saw him and his father move to the United States in 2006.

He made the transatlantic trip at just nine years old. However, he played football from the age of five. Plus, education in the Hertha Berlin academy, meant that his skill transferred to Washington's suburbs with ease.

The humble beginnings of MSC United and Bethesda SC progressed to the elite side at Olney Rangers in 2011. Two years was enough, the youngster was noticed by Arsenal's North American scout, Danny Karbassiyoon.

It's been said that there are many American youth players are talented enough to bridge the Anglo-American divide, but they aren't permitted to travel. Yet, as Zelalem was born in Germany, his EU passport was a green light for Arsenal who signed him after a two-week trial in 2013.

“I saw Gedion in a training session. Technically he was very, very gifted, he rarely looks like he’s under pressure and always has a way out. I hadn’t seen that in players in the US, his intelligence and awareness were on another level.” (Karbassiyoon, 2016)

From fledgling Fabregas to the Eerst Divisie: Where is Zelalem now?

Zelalem's ascent continued on arrival at London Colney as onlookers continued awe-struck. The gifted talent flew through the ranks. U16, U18, the reserves. Then, all of a sudden he was cropping up in senior sessions.

This brought inclusion in the 24-man squad for Arsenal's Asia Tour. Performances against an Indonesia Dream Team, Vietnam, and Japan's Nagoya Grampus saw him quickly become a favourite. It was after this, that the praise grew and the lofty media comparisons flowed. "Arsenal's next Fabregas?" the Guardian questioned.

Alas, no. It seemed Zelalem's "great talent" as Wenger had labelled, had prematurely peaked.

Where positives like 2014's full Arsenal debut and fruitful Rangers loan the following year duly arrived – there was also mediocrity. Where Wenger had mentioned a potentially great player, in the same breath he also underlined a need for mental strength as well as physical conditioning. In a somewhat foreboding fashion, the Frenchman spoke of Zelalem's progress:

"If he manages to develop his physique and keep his qualities, he can be a very important player. Let's hope he will do it. (…) Today it is too early for him to play for us, but I would say in one year we will know more about him." (Wenger, 2014)

He got more than a year. Yet, he didn't emerge as a talent befitting of Arsenal, let alone fulfilling Cesc Fabregas' legacy. In 2017, after a poor showing at VVV Venlo on loan – making only eight appearances – Arsenal decided it was enough and let him return to America for free.

Stints at Sporting Kansas City and New York City FC subsequently came and went for the American.

Since January of 2023, Den Bosch of the Dutch second division come as Zelalem's newest club. Time is still on his side though for the 26-year-old. Maybe that "important player" is deep down in there somewhere, just waiting to emerge.

Arteta makes move to sign "exciting player" for Arsenal, Odegaard loves him

Yet to really get out of second gear, Arsenal have still managed to remain unbeaten in their opening four Premier League games, with their most impressive win coming last time out in dramatic style against Manchester United.

Their draw against Fulham aside, it has been as expected from the Gunners, who are looking to push Manchester City all the way again having missed out on the league title in the previous campaign.

Those at The Emirates have certainly backed Mikel Arteta, too, splashing the cash in the summer transfer window on reinforcements who could bridge the gap to Pep Guardiola's side.

If the summer arrivals don't do the job, however, the North Londoners have already turned their attention to January additions, with reports indicating that Mikel Arteta has already made contact with one particular target.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

When looking at the current Arsenal squad, there's not a lot, if anything, that they urgently lack, meaning that it could simply be a case of extending their quality even more in January and looking towards the future with a luxury signing or two.

With the Champions League to think about this season, and that hopefully still being the case come January from Arsenal's perspective, there's no limit on the depth that a side needs.

With that said, according to Voetbalkrant, Arsenal are among the sides interested in Club Brugge winger Antonio Nusa in January, and Arteta has already reached out to the 18-year-old over a potential move in the winter transfer window.

The Gunners will have to act quickly if they are to secure the teenager's signature, however, given that AS Monaco, Liverpool, Ajax, Lyon, and Borussia Dortmund are all also reportedly keeping an eye on him. Meanwhile, Chelsea also reportedly had a €30m (£26m) rejected for Nusa in the summer, suggesting that Brugge would want a fairly big offer to sell their future star.

Should Arsenal sign Antonio Nusa?

Club Brugge'sAntonioNusacelebrates scoring their fourth goal with Casper Nielsen

With the foundation for success already built at The Emirates, Arsenal would be doing themselves no harm by pursuing stars for the future. And that's where Nusa could come in.

The youngster has attracted plenty of interest from across Europe, which will only entice the Gunners even more when January comes around. That interest comes as little surprise, too, given that the winger, at 18, is already so heavily involved in first-team action in Belgium.

When at his best, Nusa has earned plenty of deserved praise, including from Arsenal star Martin Odegaard, who praised his fellow Norwegian, telling TV2, via Sport Witness: "Fantastic! He is an incredibly exciting player. You see it, everything he gets the ball, it’s exciting. He is still young and will get even better. It was cool to see him. He deserved to get the chance that he takes it to such an extent. Incredibly cool!

“He must continue as he has done. Work hard, be humble. He’s a nice boy. Very calm and nice type. It’s going to be just fine. He just has to enjoy the football and continue to deliver as he does. Then it will be good.”

Afghanistan Premier League slated for October 2018

Approximately 40 international players are expected to participate in the player drafts for the tournament scheduled to be held in the UAE

Danyal Rasool11-Jan-2018

Associated Press

Afghanistan is set to join the growing ranks of countries that have a T20 competition of their own, with their cricket board (ACB) announcing the launch of the Afghanistan Premier League. Following the signing of the tournament’s MoU on Thursday, its first edition is set to take place in October 2018.”There will be a total of 23 matches between five teams,” ACB chief executive Shafiq Stanikzai told ESPNcricinfo. “The league will take place in the UAE, but we haven’t yet decided on which cities will play host to the league. But now we have got official approval from the Emirates Cricket Board, and we’d like to thank them for that.”Stanikzai revealed that an auction to purchase the five teams would be held in March, with a player draft to be held after that. Approximately 40 cricketers from overseas have expressed an interest in participating in the APL T20, which gives it a far heftier international presence than what Afghanistan’s other T20 competition, the Shpageeza Cricket League, enjoyed last year.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“The APL T20 will be played on a broader scale, both financially and coverage wise,” Stanikzai said. “Our strategic objective is to bring this league into the top three T20 leagues in the world.”The decision to schedule the league for October is likely no coincidence. It has traditionally been one of the few months without a global T20 league in what is becoming an increasingly saturated calendar. Indeed, in 2017, it was one of only two months (June being the other) in which an elite T20 league wasn’t played. This year, the APL T20 would hope to avoid clashing with the Caribbean Premier League, which ended in September in 2017, and the Bangladesh Premier League, which last year began in November.Stanikzai also confirmed that the Shpageeza Cricket League would continue to be played. “Shapageeza is a domestic T20 league, and the APL T20 is to be played on top of it. The Shpageeza Cricket League will be played this year, tentatively in June.”ACB chairman Atif Mashal was also buoyant about the new T20 competition’s potential. “The Afghanistan T20 Premier league will provide a valuable opportunity for Afghan players to play alongside major names in international cricket,” he said. This is the second major T20 competition that the UAE will play host to, potentially on an annual basis. Both seasons of the Pakistan Super League have been played in the UAE, while all but three matches of the third PSL season – that begins next month – are slotted to be played in the Emirates as well.
