Chelsea Open To Offers For £20m "Joy To Watch" At The Bridge

Chelsea are now open to offers for Hakim Ziyech and have set their price amid interest in the Premier League, according to reports.

What's the latest on Ziyech's future?

The Blues playmaker’s contract at Stamford Bridge isn’t set to expire until 2025 but his future has recently been uncertain after falling out of favour which has seen him make just six top-flight starts this season. Football.London have reported that Todd Boehly could be set to sanction a mass exodus this summer to try and help with the financial aspect of things and the 30-year-old is one of the names to have been included on the list of players who could potentially be facing the axe.

West Ham United and Fulham are two clubs that have already been credited with an interest in the winger should he be made available for transfer at the end of the season and there now appears to be another rival who has entered the race to secure his signature.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur have “registered an interest” in signing Ziyech during the upcoming window. Paris Saint-Germain are also expected to join the running after they saw a loan move collapse in January. The Blues forward “could look to leave” SW6 ahead of the new term after dropping down the pecking order where the Irons and the Cottagers are once again both name-checked alongside Spurs.

It’s believed that Frank Lampard's side would “accept bids” in the region of £20m which is a staggering £18m less than the £38m they initially paid for him when he joined from Ajax. PSG are currently his “preferred option”, but the Lilywhites would be the “most likely” to acquire him should he remain in the Premier League.

Chelsea forward Hakim Ziyech.

Should Chelsea keep or sell Ziyech?

Ziyech has been hailed a “joy to watch” by journalist Josh Bunting and he certainly can be on his day, but Chelsea clearly don’t see him as part of their long-term future so they should cash in whilst there is significant interest.

The Moroccan international has not featured in any of his side’s previous six top-flight outings, the last four he was completely omitted from the matchday squad and the other two he was an unused substitute. Additionally, the Dronten native has made 19 appearances across all competitions this season but has only recorded one assist during that time showing that he’s failed to prove himself when given the opportunity to play.

Finally, Ziyech is pocketing £100k-p/w in the capital which is an awful lot of money for someone who’s nothing more than a bench warmer so Chelsea letting him go would help free up their wage bill and generate funds for potential new signings in the summer.

Elliott Available for Liverpool’s Clash With Arsenal

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott will be available for the Reds' crunch Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, according to reliable journalist David Lynch.

How has Elliott done this season?

The Reds had another forgettable game in midweek away to Chelsea in a "tame" goalless stalemate. It meant more points were dropped in the battle for a top-four finish, while Newcastle United and Manchester United's wins on Wednesday night further hampered their chances.

Someone who played no part against the Blues was Elliott, who missed his first game of the season after making 41 appearances in 2022/23 to date.

The youngster was hailed as "exceptional" earlier in the season and has clearly been a favourite of Jurgen Klopp's given his increased playing time this term.

And in an update on his situation, there is positive news for the Merseysiders ahead of their weekend meeting with the Gunners.

Harvey Elliott for Liverpool

Is Elliott fit for the Arsenal clash?

Taking to Twitter, Football Insider reporter David Lynch confirmed that Elliott was simply rested against Chelsea and will be in contention to start at home to Premier League leaders Arsenal this weekend:

"Harvey Elliott expected to return to the Liverpool squad for Sunday's meeting with Arsenal. No injury concern behind his omission against Chelsea – more a recognition of a remarkable 41-game workload so far this season."

This is an undoubted boost for Liverpool, with Elliott someone who hasn't necessarily been perfect this season, but has contributed more than many struggling midfielders, registering two league assists – which is as many as Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and James Milner combined. At 19, he is already playing with a maturity beyond his years, scoring twice in the Champions League and also averaging one tackle per game in Europe's premier club competition. The Englishman deserves to come back into the side against Arsenal, with his guile capable of opening up the visitors' defence, as highlighted by 11 assists on loan at Blackburn Rovers back in 2020/21. He also boasts seven goal contributions this term, having had three in his senior Liverpool career at the start of this campaign. If Thiago is fit, it could make the most sense to start the Spaniard and Elliott in the No 8 roles, with either Fabinho or Henderson anchoring the midfield. The latter pair have been panned for their poor seasons, and if their lacklustre displays continue, starting both together could be a huge issue against a Gunners side brimming with confidence as they continue their title tilt.

There is also an argument to say that Elliott's lack of physicality and 5-foot-7 frame could be an issue on the day up against Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka, who both top six feet. However, as mentioned, we think Elliott merits a starting berth more than others, especially after getting a rest in midweek.

Liverpool: Elliott was outmuscled vs AFCB

Liverpool have suffered a humiliating defeat away from home in their Premier League clash with Bournemouth this afternoon and Jurgen Klopp will be scratching his head following the poor performance from his side after beating Manchester United 7-0 just six days ago.

The Reds have missed out on another opportunity to close the gap between themselves and the Champions League qualifying spots inside the top four and could drop into sixth depending on Newcastle United’s result against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

The 1-0 defeat will be even more frustrating for the manager, team, and supporters when considering the fact that Liverpool dominated possession (69%), had more shots on target (6 v 2), more big chances created (4 v 2) and a higher rate of dribbles completed (67% v 48%).

In the first half, Liverpool got off to a seemingly good start and looked confident in the final third and had plenty of opportunities to hit the back of the net to no avail which ultimately led to key players quickly switching off in the back-line and cost the visitors dearly when Philip Billing found the back of the net to give Bournemouth the lead in the 28th minute.

When the second half resumed so did the Merseysiders’ failure to wake up from their lethargic slump but despite their poor efforts were gifted a golden opportunity to equalise when Adam Smith committed a handball foul inside the box.

Liverpool’s 22-goal top scorer this season, Mohammed Salah, stepped up to take on Neto from the penalty spot and completely misfired which was the final nail in the coffin of a massively disappointing display from Liverpool.

Indeed, there will be fingers pointed at a number of different players with the quality of individual performances from many on the floor, however, it was Harvey Elliott who found himself completely out of his depth after being selected by his manager to complete the midfield three in the starting line-up at the Vitality Stadium.

How did Harvey Elliott get on vs Bournemouth?

The 19-year-old midfielder has become a regular feature and a trusted component in Klopp’s system over the season so far and has been fearless coming up against some of the more difficult opponents over the past few months, however, the youngster struggled massively to hold back the pressure Bournemouth applied.

Over his 45-minute performance, the Liverpool ace – dubbed too “lightweight” by Liam Corcoran – was dribbled past four times, lost 100% of his duels combined, and failed in 100% of his cross attempts, as well as making no tackles, dribble attempts and key passes which led to the player being hooked at half-time by his German coach.

The Anfield Wrap writer Leanne Prescott took to Twitter to question Elliott’s selection alongside Stefan Bajcetic with the young pair being relied upon to make the impact needed to take all three points from the clash:

“Bajcetic & Elliott together felt like a risk of being outmuscled and that’s what we saw.”

Her comment was backed up by the statistics, as the Englishman did lose all of his physical contests, and the manager may be wondering – with the benefit of hindsight – whether or not it was the right call to select him.

With that being said, Klopp was let down badly by the central midfielder and the German head coach may now decide to leave the youngster out when it comes to naming his next XI.

Rangers: Alex Lowry injured for four more weeks

Glasgow Rangers have been dealt an injury blow before they play Hibernian as Michael Beale has confirmed that Alex Lowry is out for four more weeks.

The Lowdown: Injury problems

Lowry has been suffering with injury problems throughout the season so far, and has been limited to just four senior games and 81 minutes of football.

He made a brief Scottish Premiership in early February, but has not featured in the last two league squads.

The Latest: Four weeks out

Speaking to the media after their 3-1 win against Kilmarnock at Ibrox over the weekend (via Heart & Hand), Michael Beale has confirmed that Lowry is facing ‘another four weeks’ out with injury:

“MB also updated on Alex Lowry – out for another four weeks.”

The Verdict: Gutting

It is certainly a blow for Beale to lose Lowry for the next set of fixtures, especially considering all of the other injuries that he has in the squad.

Rangers have as many as six other first-team players out through injury, making it harder for Beale to put a full squad out.

Lowry has deserved his opportunities given his impressive performances for the Gers’ B team, where he has scored ten goals and made one assist in 11 matches in total so far this term (Transfermarkt).

His former academy manager Graeme Murty claims that the 19-year-old is ‘unlike anyone else’ at the club, lauding his ‘technical ability’, ‘range of passing’ and ‘remarkable self-confidence’.

Nonetheless, the Light Blues will be hoping that Lowry recovers in time for the crunch match against bitter rivals Celtic in early April.

Brendan Rodgers not likely to join West Ham

BBC pundit Chris Sutton has claimed that there is no chance Brendan Rodgers could be hired as the next West Ham United manager.

What’s the latest on Brendan Rodgers to West Ham?

Over the weekend, the Hammers were unable to put up much of a fight as they lost 2-0 away from home in the Premier League against Tottenham Hotspur.

As a result, the club end the game week stuck inside the relegation zone on 20 points. Unsurprisingly, some supporters have started to lose patience with David Moyes.

For instance, while hosting the BBC 606 radio show, Sutton spoke to a caller who insisted that Leicester City boss Rodgers was the right man to come and take over for the rest of the season.

In response, the pundit said: “That’s not realistic. Do you think Brendan Rodgers is going to leave Leicester for West Ham? Come on, get in the real world.”

What does David Moyes’ pressure mean for West Ham?

It’s not been a great season for West Ham with Moyes accepting that his position was under press even before the new year. Though, up to this point, the board have stuck with him.

With the threat of relegation looming ever closer, however, it’s not hard to see why the fans will as though it could be an appropriate time for a change in manager.

Of course, Rodgers isn’t having the best season with the Foxes either. Indeed, they were thumped 3-0 away from home at Manchester United on the weekend which leaves them 14th in the table, just four points above the Irons.

At Leicester, the 50-year-old has averaged 1.64 points per game from 198 matches, while Moyes is at 1.53 from 154 matches. So it’s easy to see why he might be seen as an upgrade but it feels like a lot would have to change quickly and dramatically for Rodgers to end up at West Ham any time soon.

Arsenal: Dinnery gives Partey injury verdict

Injury expert and Sky Sports contributor Ben Dinnery has given his verdict on the current injury sustained by Arsenal’s Thomas Partey.

The Lowdown: FA Cup knock

Partey suffered an injury for Mikel Arteta’s side against fellow Premier League club Manchester City in the FA Cup. Indeed, he was taken off in the 45th minute and replaced by Albert Sambi Lokonga.

The Ghanaian has been a mainstay in the Gunners midfield, playing 16 league fixtures and starting all of those games for the north London outfit.

This season joining from Atletico Madrid in October 2020 for £45 million.

The Latest: Question marks

Dinnery claimed it’s hard to know for certain about the status of Partey, if he’s available he could end up wearing some form of protective clothing on his ribs when speaking on Premier FPL Injuries.

He stated: “In midfield Thomas Partey, this is a big question mark. That was a rib injury, he’ll need to come through a sole training session on Friday or at least take part in a full contract session.

“There is a possibility that he could wear some kind of protective shield for that rib. Just given the nature of that problem. and obviously, he needs to be able to be comfortable and breathe.

“It’s a difficult one, so it’s going to be a good balance between protecting that area and for him to be able to slowly function and move around the field. So it remains to be seen the big question marks here with that one.”

The Verdict: Gunners have depth

We believe that if Partey is ruled out for Arsenal’s clash with Everton, then Arteta does have a sufficient backup option in midfield.

The Gunners signed Jorginho from Chelsea on deadline day for a fee of £12 million, the Italian signed an 18-month contract with Arsenal.

In our view, the 31-year-old will add experience to Arsenal’s ranks, due to the fact he’s played in the Premier League for a number of seasons as well as top European competitions, which include the Champions League and Europa League.

However, if it’s the choice between Partey and the ex-Chelsea man to start, Arsenal’s number five gets the edge for us.

Glenn Murray heaped praise on the Ghanaian for his performance against Nottingham Forest when speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live (via GhanaWeb.com), he claimed ‘everything’ that Arsenal did came ‘through’ the work of Partey.

In our view, the fact that the 29-year-old is in an ongoing who’s the better player debate with a multi-time Champions League winner in Manchester United’s Casemiro, says all you need to know about the level of his ability.

Crystal Palace missed out on Nketiah

Crystal Palace were heavily linked with signing Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal in the summer and his superb recent form suggests that he could have been a big hit in Patrick Vieira’s side.

In a recent column for Caught Offside, journalist Ben Jacobs reveals that the 23-year-old was contemplating leaving the Gunners in search of first-team football, with Palace and Bayer Leverkusen amongst the interested sides.

Nketiah’s contract at the Emirates was due to expire in the summer of 2022 but the exit of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and the poor form of Alexandre Lacazette opened the door for him to have a run of games under Mikel Arteta.

He would certainly take his chance, hitting five goals and one assist in the top flight last season despite starting just eight games, which convinced him to sign a new five-year deal with the Gunners, earning the famous number 14 shirt worn by Thierry Henry.

Although he would lose his starting spot to summer signing Gabriel Jesus, the Brazilian’s injury has paved the way for the Englishman to reclaim a regular place in the side and he is playing a big part in the Gunners’ title push, with another two goals last weekend as Arsenal triumphed over title rivals Manchester United.

His goals and performance in that 3-2 win saw him earn a lot of praise from the pundits on Sky Sports (via Daily Mail).

Gary Neville said: “He has been brilliant. the feeling was that when  [Gabriel] Jesus got injured they would struggle, but he has led the line brilliantly.”

Jamie Redknapp also described the £100k-per-week striker’s second goal as an “Ian Wright finish,” which considering his impact at both Arsenal and Palace during his playing career, is high praise indeed.

The former England international would hit 117 goals for Palace and 158 for Arsenal in his career and had the Eagles completed a move for Nketiah in the summer, he would have no doubt been looking to emulate those sorts of figures.

In total, the young striker has nine goals in all competitions this season, which is more than anyone in Palace’s squad has managed, so Vieira could have definitely used a player of his goalscoring ability at Selhurst Park.

If Nketiah continues to impress in a potentially title-winning Arsenal side, Palace’s failure to bring him in from the Emirates last summer will have to go down as another mistake by Steve Parish.

Crystal Palace: Pepe could replace Schlupp

Crystal Palace are reportedly interested in signing Porto’s Pepe in this month’s transfer window and the versatile Brazilian could be a big upgrade on Jeffrey Schlupp at Selhurst Park.

According to reports from Portugal (via Sport Witness), Palace sent scouts to the Estadio do Dragao at the weekend to watch Sérgio Conceição’s side take on Familicao, a game they won 4-1.

Pepe was thought to be the centre of Palace’s attention, with the Eagles having been linked with the 25-year-old in 2022, and considering his impressive performances so far this campaign, it is easy to see why Patrick Vieira might be keen on bringing him to Selhurst Park this month.

Featuring in a number of positions across defence, midfield and attack, the Porto star has contributed an eye-catching two goals and four assists in 16 appearances for Porto, averaging a superb 7.21 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Considering Eberechi Eze and Wilfried Zaha are ranked as the top performers at Selhurst Park so far this campaign with a 6.91 average rating, it is clear the quality that Pep would add to Vieira’s squad should he join this month.

It may be difficult to prise Pepe away from the Dragons in the transfer window, given he only signed a new contract until 2027 a few months ago, a decision which was praised by journalist Fernando Campos.

He said:

“Pepê also signed until 2027 with the Portuguese team. Getting better and more important in Sérgio Conceição’s team.”

Some reports in Portugal also suggest that he has a £65m release clause, making any potential move a rather difficult one for CEO Steve Parish to sanction.

Versatility is a quality that managers often look for in their players and currently Vieira relies upon Schlupp as the most versatile option in his squad, with the former Leicester man having featured predominantly at full-back, central midfield and on the wing during his time at Palace.

However, the Ghanaian’s contract at Selhurst Park is set to expire at the end of the season and the 30-year-old has disappointed in his performances in the Premier League this season, averaging a 6.51 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Pepe has also averaged far more interceptions (1.6 vs 0.9), key passes (1.4 vs 0.3) and dribbles (1.6 vs 0.5) per game than Schlupp this season, which suggests that he would be a big upgrade in Vieira’s side.

Therefore, if the French manager is looking for a younger, more versatile option in his side in the January window, then he and Parish should definitely look at bringing the Porto star to south London.

Celtic: Imagine Jota and Casper Tengstedt

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou appears intent on bringing in a new centre-forward in the January transfer window, with the uncertainty surrounding the future of Giorgos Giakoumakis having only heightened the need for a new striking addition.

The Parkhead giants appear to have turned their attention towards Rosenborg marksman Casper Tengstedt as one potential solution this month, with Football Scotland reporting at the end of December that the Old Firm giants are considering a move for the 22-year-old.

The suggestion is that the Scottish champions are set for ‘initial conversations’ with the player’s camp ahead of a possible switch, albeit with any move potentially set to prove difficult with the Dane also attracting interest from clubs in both Germany and Italy.

The prolific ace – whose existing deal is set to run until 2026 – has been in scintillating form in Norway in recent months, having scored 15 goals and provided nine assists in just 14 league games for his current side thus far, after previously netting 20 goals and laying on ten assists in only 57 games for Danish side AC Horsens.

Such “ridiculous” numbers, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, have unsurprisingly captured the attention of clubs across Europe, with the Denmark U21 international having proven himself a truly ruthless presence in front of goal.

Were Postecoglou and co to bring the one-time Midtjylland man to Glasgow it could well allow Tengstedt to form a ferocious forward partnership with Portuguese gem, Jota, with the latter man having been a leading figure for the Hoops in recent years.

The 23-year-old may have gone seven league games without providing a goal contribution, although he still boasts an impressive haul of five goals and six assists in the top flight this term, after also netting twice in just four Champions League group stage appearances.

Prior to that, the former Benfica wizard had also sparkled during his debut campaign at the club after providing 13 goals and 14 assists across all fronts last term, proving vital in the Bhoys’ title success.

The “scary” talent – as lauded by pundit Tam McManus – clearly possesses a knack for both scoring himself but also creating openings for his teammates, as he ranks third in the division for chances created per game (2.31), while also averaging 1.9 key passes per 90.

To have such a creative figure operating on the flanks and with the lethal Tengstedt through the middle could well prove a truly devastating combination, with the latter man likely to thrive of such elite service.

It may take a sizeable bid for Celtic to get the Rosenborg ace through the door, although such an acquisition would seemingly be a notable coup for the club.
