Tottenham fans will enjoy this … Five things we learnt from England v Italy

Last night’s 1-1 draw with Italy wasn’t quite the thrilling 90 minutes we were all hoping for. After a lacklustre first half, Hodgson changed things round and his tactics seemed to work with a beautiful strike from super-sub Andros Townsend continuing their unbeaten run.

The Tottenham winger’s strike cancelled out Graziano Pelle’s opener meaning The Three Lions managed to earn a draw with the Azzurri in Turin. The only downside was when Chris Smalling appeared to pick up a knock on the  41st minute but it seems that the Manchester United defender had been simply feeling unwell.

One must be careful not to read too much into friendlies – but nevertheless – here are FIVE things we learned from England’s 1-1 draw with Italy:

Giorgio Chiellini hasn’t changed a bit

Giorgio Chiellini has always been known for having a presence in Italy’s defence and last night he showed Harry Kane what it is like to play against the “big men”.

It only took 20 seconds to leave Kane in a heap in the floor in midfield and the game progressed much like this with the defender never once getting penalised. Good to see getting bitten by a certain Uruguayan in Brazil hasn’t mellowed his physical style of play anyway.

Last year’s rising star is still just as good

While people have been ‘fan girling’ over Harry Kane, the rest of the England squad have been slowly getting on with business. Last year Andros Townsend was the player that was on everybody’s lips but since then fans have struggled to make their minds up as to whether he is a really good player that sometimes has an off day or visa versa.

One thing is for sure: carry on shooting like that and the fans will love you. Sometimes when clever passes don’t work and you can’t get the ball in the box the best solution is to just hit it as best you can.

Hodgson still coming to terms with ‘friendly’ aspect

My favourite moment of the match came after the referee had blown the final whistle. ITV went to interview the England manager who expressed his disappointment with the first half and when asked about Andros Townsend’s performance he came out with this fantastic line:

“Thank goodness he scored, without it we wouldn’t have got a point”.

Hate to break it to you Roy, but you don’t get any points in friendlies! After an awkward silence from the interviewer as he tried to think what to say normal service was resumed and answers went back to normal.

Buffon is still a superb goalie

Last night was Gianluigi Buffon’s 147th cap for Italy and the 37-year-old showed us all why he is just as good as ever. He is the 18th highest capped footballer ever and last night he was on form meaning England’s poor attempts on goal were easily saved.

Andros Townsend, England’s scorer, swapped shirts with Italy’s goalie after the match and the joy on his face was there for all to see. Let’s face it: Buffon is a legend, so to score a goal against him probably made it a pretty special night for the Tottenham youngster.

England fans got a bit carried away … again!

England fans have a terrible habit of getting ahead of themselves; every major tournament we all secretly hope we can perform a miracle. After one of the best performances for a while in England shirts against Lithuania, England fans started to dream that the Euros 2016 could be one of the best tournaments England have had in years.

Sadly we were shown that England haven’t quite made the high levels we had all hoped. Playing against Italy is a bit more of a challenge than Lithuania and we were soon shown that England could still struggle against the bigger sides. There has been progress though and that’s a start.

Baird waiting on Fulham talks

Chris Baird could be on his way out of Fulham this summer as he has yet to be approached about a new contract.

The Northern Ireland international appeared to be a big part of Cottagers boss Martin Jol’s plans this season after making 22 appearances up to the victory against Stoke in February.

However Baird has been left out in the cold since then, and has even been overlooked for the match-day squad in some games when Jol has been struggling for numbers due to injuries.

Jol recently revealed that he has started talks with several first-team squad members who are approaching the end of their contracts at Craven Cottage.

But Baird’s representatives claim they have not been contacted for talks and it seems that the player’s six-year stint in London could be coming to an end.

That will alert West Brom who failed in a bid to bring the former Southampton defender to the Hawthorns during the January transfer window.

HYS: Should Son or Lamela start vs Manchester City?

It’s been a fantastic season for Heung-min Son, especially at Wembley where the South Korean international has netted 14 times and assisted four goals across all competitions – including nine strikes in the Premier League.

But with the end of the campaign now in sight, perhaps the versatile attacker – who Transfermarkt value at £31.5million – is starting to run out of steam. Son’s failed to find the net during his last two appearances and when coupled with his three international outings for South Korea, his goalless streak now stands at five games – his last goal coming in the 4-1 win over Bournemouth.

In contrast, Erik Lamela has really come into his own since returning from injury, adding real aggression and tricky ingenuity to this Tottenham side. The 23-cap Argentine has steadily improved with practically every performance and had a big influence in the 3-1 over Chelsea.

So, Spurs fans, with the Lilywhites facing a huge test at Wembley this weekend in the form of champions in waiting Manchester City, which attacking midfielder would you prefer to see in the starting XI? Let us know by voting below…

Do Leicester’s struggles give hope to others?

As this year’s Championship promotion race heats up, unusually there is no standout team running away with the division. Even at this late point in the season, there are still a number of teams who could lift the trophy come May.

So does the fact that no teams have dominated the division mean that any teams who do gain promotion, will subsequently be relegated straight away?

A common suggestion heard around football grounds is ‘We are not ready to get promoted, we will just come straight back down.’ Particularly at my club Wolves, the idea of promotion is met with scepticism and optimism in the same amounts. If they are not good enough to win the league, they will of course be embarrassed in the Premier League. Or will they?

A look at last year’s Championship, would be the argument against any such assumption. Leicester City were by far and away the best team in the division, beating everyone in their wake to win the league with a superb 102 points. Far too good for the second tier, so it could be presumed they would be by far the best of the promoted sides.

Wrong.

[ad_pod id=’ffc-video-small’ align=’left’]

With only 19 points, they prop up this year’s Premier League and seem almost certain for the drop. Their dominance in the division below has clearly not transferred into the top flight. Burnley and QPR both finished well behind the Foxes last term but both boast, albeit slightly, better chances of survival.

If we look at the campaign before last, a similar pattern emerges. Cardiff City had won the Championship at a canter, a far superior team to the other two promoted sides, Hull City and Crystal Palace. While Hull and Palace survived their first Premier League season comfortably, Cardiff City were relegated. In bottom place.

One season previous, Reading’s Championship title meant little in their following season. It was only a distant memory when they were relegated after only one term in the top flight.

So although winning the title and dominating the division should logically give a side a better chance of adapting to the top flight, it is certainly not always the case.

The chasing pack in the Championship should take note. Promotion can never come too soon. Palace are the perfect example, a team who were promoted on the back of a campaign built on momentum. Now of course, there subsequent managerial appointments have meant they can now look to establish themselves as a fixture in the top division.

Those opportunities would have almost certainly not materialised, had they not grasped the chance of promotion glory when it came around.

Do Arsenal’s real problems simply lie with their formation?

The level of praise aimed at Arsenal following their two most recent wins in the league and Champions League indicates that maybe there is hope to be had from a formation that was adopted to suit Cesc Fabregas. But while this is a team whose mental fragility regularly comes to the fore, you have to ask how much good any group of players can do – no matter their quality – in a system that isn’t set up for them.

It doesn’t help when the players aren’t properly prepared to carry out the orders of a specific formation. Wanting to replicate Barcelona is ok – because who wouldn’t encourage that style of play? But doing it lazily and with only half the conviction amounts to results that we regularly see at the Emirates. Yes, there is a great deal of importance laid at the quality of players in the team, but it’s very much the willingness to work that transforms a good team on paper to a very good team on the pitch.

There’s been a lot said about the lack of a real defensive midfielder, a powerhouse of a player who knows how to break up opposition play and who has the discipline to protect the back line. That much is true, in that without the pressure high up the pitch from the forwards, a stronger body is essential to sit in front of the defence.

The frustration is that this Arsenal team is capable of producing performances which complement the formation and helps to produce results. Wins against Chelsea, Milan, Tottenham, and Barcelona has given plenty of evidence that working for 90 minutes is in this team, where Arsenal have outscored those four teams over four games by a combined total of 13-4. It’s not that the defence were always particularly outstanding, but it’s that the opposition hardly had a consistent run at the Arsenal back line due to the pressure put on by Wenger’s side high up the pitch. That is, of course, with the exception of the win over Barcelona at the Emirates.

[opinion-widget op width=”full”]

Yet even the 2-1 win over Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona showed that the collective is capable of brilliance. It once again comes down to tactical preparation and a desire to win, rather than surrendering the fight long before it’s over. Arsenal were never going to see more of the ball in that game, yet victory was achieved because the players understood and carried out what was needed for that formation to be a success.

The most recent set of Arsenal wins are unlikely to have been won with players like Arshavin in the line-up. As talented as the Russian is, he has regularly shown a lack of willingness to play the defensive side of the game. Players like Aaron Ramsey, on the other hand, never seem to shy away, even when poor displays frustrate and anger supporters.

We’ve seen recently that the 4-3-3 formation, or any variation of it, can be a success when used with a deep defensive line. What we can take from those wins is that real tactical preparation is a must. Sending out clear instructions to each set of players is essential. Barcelona had problems with underperforming players, but the root cause of their recent troubles is that Jordi Roura is nothing of a coach compared to either Guardiola or Tito Vilanova.

This current formation for Arsenal clearly isn’t best for what Wenger has in his squad. By now, it’s clear this group of players do not have it in them to churn out high-pressure performances each week. There isn’t too much wrong with the formation and how it affects the defence. It’s about defending high up the pitch as a unit, and the problem is that these players are not good enough mentally to perform in a manner that Barcelona or Dortmund do.

Yes, the focus has been shifted now to the defensive aspect of the formation, where even the result against Sunderland showed that this team are capable of digging deep. But it’s losses against Tottenham, Bayern, and allowing a late goal against Swansea when Kieran Gibbs’ effort was enough to seal the win that highlights the inconsistency.

The formation can work, but it needs one of two things to be far more successful than Arsenal currently are: either a natural defensive midfielder, or the pressing game that has become a constant at both Barcelona and Dortmund – but preferably both. When the manager doesn’t demand the work ethic that’s required from all over the pitch, the defence ultimately suffers.

Lindelof pays tribute to Man United teammate Sanchez

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has hailed Alexis Sanchez for the Chilean’s performance against Swansea City in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Sanchez has largely struggled to make his mark for the Red Devils since switching from Arsenal during the January transfer window.

The attacker netted on his home debut for the club against Huddersfield Town, but found it difficult to make an impression as the Red Devils bowed out of the Champions League.

[ad_pod ]

Sanchez enjoyed arguably his best game in a United shirt at the weekend, however, as he set up Romelu Lukaku for the game’s opener before netting the second in the 2-0 success.

Lindelof, who now seems to be winning over the United fans, has revealed that he was ‘very happy’ for Sanchez due to the struggles that the 29-year-old has endured during his short time at the Theatre of Dreams.

Lindelof told MUTV:

“I think Alexis also had a very good game and he showed his movement and quality with the ball is great so I am very happy for him as well.”

Next up for United is a trip to Manchester City in the Premier League this weekend, and defeat for Jose Mourinho’s side at the Etihad Stadium would hand their bitter rivals the title.

Hodgson trolls England fans by picking average Arsenal & Man United players

So Roy Hodgson’s gone all joker on us again this afternoon by naming a completely ridiculous England squad to face Lithuania and Italy at the end of this month. We’ve come to expect it from England managers over the years – picking players on the basis of the club they represent rather than their performances on the pitch. Just look at the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Jack Colbalk, Fabian Delph and Andros Townsend as recent examples of that. But just when we though a disastrous World Cup might just convince Hodgson to start getting rid of the bang average players from his squad and giving an opportunity to the players that truly work hard for their teams each and every week, he goes and does it again. The England squad for the coming internationalsÂis as follows…

There are players who deserve their call ups, such as Harry Kane, Adam Lallana, Jordan Henderson and Nathaniel Clyne, but the rest? Not exactly been setting the Premier League a light, have they?

So let’s go to work and prove just how much Roy Hodgson is having a right ol’ laugh with his England selection…

Left-Backs

So Luke Shaw gets his obligatory call up for England, presumably because Manchester United got excited and wasted £27million on him last summer. He’s only played 13 Premier League games this season and has been painfully average for the Red Devils.

Arsenal’s Kieron Gibbs also gets in the squad, despite being just a little bit better than Shaw for the Gunners this term.

Who got left out? West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell, who has been nothing short of sensational for the Hammers since signing from Ipswich in the summer, and Spurs’ Danny Rose who, despite being pretty average anyway, has been so much better than Shaw and Gibbs…

The above clearly proves Roy’s picked the wrong two back up left-backs for Bainesy, presumably because they play for top four clubs.

Midfielders

So Jordan Henderson’s arguably our main man in midfield from now on, and we’re completely fine with that. But what on earth is Andros Townsend doing in Roy’s squad? The Spurs player has played just 600 minutes of Premier League football this season and was subbed off early against United last week because he couldn’t handle Ashley Young. For the record, Ashley Young didn’t get a call up. LOL.

And don’t get us started on Fabian Delph. Anyone playing for a team that’s been pathetic up until about a week ago should be nowhere near an international team. Simples.

Meanwhile, poor old Stewart Downing has been dropped and his Hammers teammate Mark Noble continues to be overlooked. Blimey…

Strikers

Good grief, Roy. Just what on earth have you been smoking? Harry Kane? He deserves his called up. But Danny Welbeck? The striker who has scored just FOUR Premier League goals all season? That’s only a couple more than Carlton Cole, by they way.

Meanwhile, down the other end of the table, Danny Ings and Charlie Austin have bagged 24 goals between them. Where are their call ups? Goals win you football matches, so why is there a striker in the squad who’s only scored four of the bleeding things?

Then there’s Saido Berahino. But we’ll let his stats do the talking below…

See, Roy? It’s not rocket science. You look at who’s been performing the best in the Premier League this season, double check that they’re actually English and then give them a chance.

No wonder we slipped down to 17th in the FIFA rankings recently…

Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal – Match Preview

Has there ever been more riding on one North London derby in its illustrious history? When Tottenham and Arsenal rekindle their rivalry at White Hart Lane on Sunday it will be Andre Villas-Boas’ men in the driving seat for Champions League qualification; the prize both teams are desperate to claim. Spurs have been nothing short of excellent in 2013 with Villas-Boas adding to his January Manager of the Month award by winning it again in February. The Portuguese coach fully deserves the accolade having guided the club into the top three on the back of a 15 game unbeaten run following a bumpy start to life as Harry Redknapp’s successor. Incidentally their last defeat came in the reverse of this fixture in November but since then the Lilywhites have gone from strength to strength. Much of that owes to the blistering form of one Gareth Bale (February’s Player of the Month by chance) with the Welshman currently the name on the lips of world football. An incredible 90th minute winner at West Ham on Monday, his 12th goal in as many games, and another match winning performance illustrated just how good he is playing at the moment and his importance to the club. So it wouldn’t be remiss to suggest he will be the difference between victory and defeat on Sunday.

How the Gunners plan to cage the Welsh winger is another question entirely. One that Arsene Wenger admitted he didn’t have an answer to during the week. Just how do you shackle Bale at the moment? Nevertheless the main concern for Wenger will be whether his ramshackle defence can withstand the expected onslaught and their brittle confidence will be tested if they concede the first goal. The history books don’t paint a pretty picture for Arsenal given that they haven’t achieved a victory at White Hart Lane since September 2007 and desperately need to put wins on the board if they are to stay in touch with the top four. Should they return to the Emirates Stadium successful it could animate what has been a lifeless season but, in all truth, its hard to see that happening.

Team News

Jermain Defoe has shaken off an ankle injury and could take a place on the substitutes bench but Clint Dempsey (calf) is out.

Arsenal could welcome back Abou Diaby from a calf problem. However, they are without fullbacks Bacary Sagna (knee) and Kieran Gibbs (thigh).

What the managers said…

“We have the best league in the world, in my opinion, and while the best clubs continue to attract the best players, a player can develop to his full potential in this league. We don’t want Gareth to go in any circumstances. Our chairman is very difficult [for other clubs] to deal with, and we will try to hold onto our assets. We believe we have to hold onto our best players in order to achieve our objectives, and our objectives every season go higher. This season we want to finish in the Champions League, and next season you never know what team we can build if we can manage to achieve our objectives for this season.” Andre Villas-Boas says he is desperate to keep Gareth Bale at Tottenham beyond this season (ESPN)

“We don’t plan for anybody. He is not a subject of our worries for the next two or three days. We just want to prepare. We have great players in our team and it would be a complete mistake to focus on any player from Tottenham. There is no special player that you least like to face. All players have different qualities and there is no player that you’d absolutely ask to meet. What is important when you are a manager is that you are focused, you always worry and that hasn’t changed over the last 15 years. You always make sure your team are at their best, prepare well and focuses on playing the football that we love. What is important before a game like that is just to focus on our game and forget all the rest.” Arsene Wenger admits there is no plan to contain Gareth Bale (London Evening Standard)

Pre-Match Statistic: Interestingly the last two North London derbies have ended 5-2 to Arsenal with Tottenham reduced to 10 men in both.

Man United fans debate merits of Mourinho’s pragmatism in light of surprising stat

Liverpool produced a dazzling first half performance to race into a 3-0 lead against champions-elect Manchester City on Wednesday.Pep Guardiola’s men have the Premier League sewn up and look likely to clinch title glory against bitter rivals United on Saturday but their dreams of adding the Champions League to their trophy cabinet for the first time in their history took a major pounding thanks to goals from Mo Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane.Maybe it’s because the two teams facing each other are United’s two biggest rivals or perhaps it’s because Jose Mourinho’s big game approach is so different to City’s and Liverpool’s – not to mention that of Spurs – but Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News felt compelled to compare United’s Anfield record with their local rivals’.

Mourinho’s pragmatism, as well as the approaches of Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes and Louis van Gaal – the fact that United have had four managers in the time the stat covers somewhat dampens its impact as a Guardiola/Mourinho comparison – means that their defensive record at Anfield compares very favourably to City’s.

But is it relevant? Also, Guardiola’s City still have hope of winning by three in the home leg, United likely wouldn’t.

United fans were not impressed either and we’ve taken a closer look at the best of their reaction…

Man United and Arsenal…Is this Spanish talent on his way to the Premier League?

Since first breaking into Carlo Ancelotti’s star-studded line-up at the Bernabeu last season, the career of Spain’s latest striking sensation has been on a very steady rise in-deed. 22-year-old Alvaro Morata has been in impressive form for Seire A giants Juventus this season, and despite having to operate largely from the bench under Massimiliano Allegri, his contribution in the famous black & white has been largely appreciated by fans of the Old Lady.

The former Real Madrid star has a decent goalscoring return in 2014/15, scoring six goals from eighteen league appearances, whilst supplying his teammates with four well deserved assists in the process. Although such statistics may not be the cause for widespread praise or acclaim in the Spaniard’s direction, when you consider that most of his appearances have come as a substitute, the potential on offer from Morata really starts to become apparent.

Despite Real Madrid having first ‘dibs’ on any move linking their former talent away from Juventus, the technically gifted striker has reportedly been attracting serious interest from the Premier League and beyond this campaign. Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal will supposedly all be in for the Spanish goal-scorer throughout what is likely to be a very interesting summer.

In light of such developments, how would Alvaro Morata take to a potential new life in the English top-flight, and which of the Premier League’s front runners would be best suited to housing the in-form Spaniard?

Since arriving in Italy for a fee in the region of £16million last summer, Morata has rarely been able to escape the spotlight in his attempts to develop as a player. He certainly arrives as a raw gem in need of a great deal more work, namely on his physicality and aggressiveness in and around the box, but Spain’s latest talent nevertheless has a great deal going for him at this current stage in his career.

[ad_pod id=’football-friends’ align=’center’]

The former Bernabeu man has quick feet that can often get him out of trouble, processes impressive movement and always gives his teammates the option should they need it, as well as being able to find the net in great style, and at a decent level of frequency. Whilst none of the aspects that make up Alvaro Morata’s game have been perfectly fine-tuned as of yet, perhaps under the guidance of one of the Premier League’s most high profile bosses, such development can truly start to take place.

With that in mind, Arsene Wenger would seem like the perfect man to get the Juve no. 9 firing in the English top-flight. The long-term Gunners boss is adept at working with just this type of player, and as someone of Alvaro Morata’s style and talent will be nothing new to the main man at the Emirates, the Spanish hitman would likely thrive at Arsenal.

However, as Wenger has been known to opt for one single centre-forward to lead the line for his team in the past, as well as for the fact that many of the Emirates faithful are expecting a more high-profile striker to arrive at the club in the near future, maybe Morata isn’t quite as suited to Arsenal as he may initially seem.

For that reason, perhaps one of the Premier League’s other big clubs would be better suited at housing the youngster. The current Juve star could certainly see his game come on leaps and bounds whilst playing alongside the likes of Robin van Persie, Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria at Old Trafford, but as Manchester United are team who seemingly have too many ‘must have’ names in their starting XI right now, Morata might just be faced with even more bench time should he decide to join up with Louis van Gaal’s regime.

Liverpool could therefore be the perfect solution for the Spanish hot-shot should his time in Serie A come to a natural end. Playing among Rodgers’ skilful strikeforce would certainly be a beneficial experience for Morata, and as the Reds have needed someone to simply stick the ball in the back of the net throughout the course of this season, the former Real Madrid forward could be a great option. The Anfield faithful may be expecting someone of a more recognised level to lead the line for their team next season, but Morata’s youth, hunger, and so far promising record would certainly hold him in good stead should Brendan Rodgers decide to take the gamble.

Wherever Alvaro Morata’s future ultimately lies, expect the Spaniard’s name to continue to do the rounds within the footballing community, and continue to develop as a player for whatever team he chooses to represent.
