Calvin Bassey was Rangers’ real cup hero

Rangers ended their season in joyous fashion as the Glasgow giants lifted the Scottish Cup with a 2-0 win at Hampden Park on Saturday.

Gio van Bronckhorst’s men dug in deep to overcome the disappointment of their Europa League final defeat to win a trophy, as goals from Ryan Jack and Scott Wright in extra time sealed the win.

The initial 90 minutes were cagey from both teams as they struggled to create any clear-cut chances of note, aside from a Joe Aribo strike which was well-saved by Craig Gordon.

Jack then gave Rangers the lead two minutes into extra-time as he produced a sensational strike from the edge of the penalty box which cannoned into the back of the Hearts net off the crossbar.

Wright, who also came off the bench, then made sure of the result a couple of minutes later as he latched onto a pass from Ryan Kent and buried the ball into the bottom corner of Gordon’s net.

Whilst Jack sparked the Light Blues into life, and ultimately won the cup with his sublime goal in the 94th minute, the real Scottish Cup final hero for the Gers was full-back Calvin Bassey.

Bassey was Rangers’ real hero

After catching the eye with an excellent performance against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League final at centre-back, the 22-year-old was moved to left-back against Hearts and was absolutely outstanding from start to finish.

Scotland women’s international Joelle Murray described his display as “phenomenal”, while The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell also heaped praise on the defender during the game.

He tweeted: “Bassey has been outstanding again here, this time at left back. A few brilliant crosses first half and already a couple of runs down the outside since the break. It’s like he now fully appreciates just how much of a physical advantage he has over most opponents.”

As Campbell highlighted, the Nigeria international kept breaking way on the outside of defenders and got joy down the left flank. He produced two magnificent crosses into the box in regular time as he teed up Joe Aribo and Amad Diallo, only for both players to miss with their head. He also had an effort of his own which required a save from Gordon.

Bassey kept the Hearts attackers at bay and added an attacking threat with his own play as he put together a complete performance for Van Bronckhorst, further enhancing his growing reputation at Ibrox.

Therefore, the full-back was the real hero of the day as he put in a sublime display from minute one to 120 as he bombed up and down the left flank non-stop throughout the match.

AND in other news, Ross Wilson plotting Rangers swoop for 16 y/o “teen talent”, GvB will be buzzing…

Rangers’ Wright disappointed in UEL final

Rangers’ swashbuckling Europa League campaign came to a heart-breaking end last night as they lost to Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties in Seville.

Joe Aribo put Van Bronckhorst’s side ahead after 57 minutes only for Frankfurt to equalise 12 minutes later.

After 90 minutes followed by extra time, the scoreline stayed the same, leading to the penalty shootout which the German side conquered and ultimately won the trophy.

Despite the valiant efforts from van Bronckhorst’s players, one figure, in particular, failed to show up and deliver when it really mattered and let his manager down as a result.

Starting on the right-wing, 24-year-old Scott Wright failed to deliver the sort of performance that is required to win a top European final.

With just 24 touches of the ball and 11 passes made, the winger ended up having fewer touches than Gers goalkeeper Allan McGregor (51).

In those 24 touches, the Scotsman barely had any attacking or defensive input on the game before he was taken off by Van Bronckhorst at the 74th-minute mark to be replaced by Fashion Sakala.

From an attacking point of view, the winger failed to register even one shot at goal as well as failing to make one cross or successful dribble attempt.

In a defensive regard, as well as not making even one tackle or interception in addition to only winning 33% of the duels he was involved in, he arguably could have done more to prevent the cross coming in that led to Frankfurt’s goal.

This display ultimately earned Wright an underwhelming overall match rating of 6.5/10 from SofaScore, making him the lowest-rated Rangers player that started the game.

Sky Sports also picked up on his disappointing performance by saying that he “didn’t overly trouble the Frankfurt defence,” as well as saying that he “had to do better to stop the cross for the equaliser.”

Taking all of this into account, while the blame for the defeat should not solely be laid at Wright’s feet, everyone connected to the club would have undoubtedly been hoping that he could have had more of an impact during his time on the pitch.

With the Ibrox side now having just one more chance to get their hands on some silverware this season when they take on Hearts in the final of the Scottish Cup on Saturday, a big question will have now emerged over whether the Rangers boss decides to start Wright again or not.

Sunderland transfer news on Bellingham

Sunderland are interested in Birmingham City starlet Jobe Bellingham, the younger brother of Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham.

The lowdown

The younger Bellingham still plays for Birmingham City, where his sibling made also made his breakthrough. Dortmund agreed a fee that could rise beyond £30million to recruit Jude from St Andrew’s, and the Blues even retired the player’s number 22 shirt.

Jobe, 16, made his Championship debut against Preston in January and also played the final half-hour on the last day of the season against Blackburn Rovers.

An attacking midfielder who can also play out wide, he too has been linked with Dortmund.

The latest

The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope broke the transfer news on Monday as Sunderland ‘explore [an] ambitious move’ for Bellingham.

They apparently ‘invited’ the player and his family to the Stadium of Light for a ‘recent home game’.

Hope stresses that Sunderland will win have to win promotion to the Championship for the deal to be viable.

The verdict

Bellingham’s first-team chances have been limited, but he’s underlined his potential at youth level.

He’s scored five goals in nine matches in the Under-18 Premier League, and that’s helped to earn him 13 appearances at Under-23 level, as well as eight caps for England’s U17s. (via Transfermarkt).

Tellingly, he’s already valued at £450,000 even though he’s still so young and has barely featured at the senior level.

Can Sunderland compete if top clubs like Dortmund are sniffing around too? Well, they may have a key advantage.

As Hope points out, sporting director Kristjaan Speakman was previously the academy director at Birmingham and enjoys a close relationship with the player’s parents – Mark and Denise Bellingham – given the role he played in Jude’s development.

Sunderland hope that this connection will be key.

In other news, The Black Cats risk losing this key figure.

AVFC planning Jesse Lingard swoop

Aston Villa are planning to offer forward Jesse Lingard a contract this summer with the 29-year-old set to leave Manchester United next month as a free agent upon the expiry of his contract.

What’s the story?

According to reports, via Birmingham Live, the Englishman is a summer target for Villa as Steven Gerrard looks to bolster his squad in his first summer transfer window in charge of the West Midlands club.

Lingard had enjoyed an excellent half-season on loan at West Ham United last season where he scored nine goals and registered five assists in 16 appearances and was labelled as “phenomenal” by TalkSPORT’s Adrian Durham.

However, since returning to United, the 29-year-old has been offered little game time under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick, starting just twice in the Premier League.

Villa must sign Lingard

Despite a cruel end to a long Manchester United career, there is no doubt that Lingard is still a talented Premier League winger.

Villa could still finish as high as seventh and as low as 15th meaning that their final four matches will be vital in deciding what sort of a proposition they will be to players they look to sign over the summer.

What is for certain though is that Gerrard will be looking for extra quality from out wide with neither big money signings Emi Buendia (£38m) nor Leon Bailey (£25m) making the desired impact at Villa Park.

Buendia has shown glimpses of brilliance but has scored just three goals in the Premier League this term, alongside registering six assists.

As for Bailey, the Jamaican’s first season in England has been injury-hit and thus the winger has managed to start just seven league matches.

Both were brought in in the attempt to replace the goal contributions of Jack Grealish who departed for Manchester City. However, Lingard alone could potentially come close.

In his final season as a Villa player, Grealish scored seven goals and registered 12 assists in 27 appearances. That averages at a goal contribution every 1.42 matches whilst at West Ham, Lingard’s average was slightly better at 1.14.

Moreover, on a free transfer, signing the £80k-per-week ace would be a bargain given his talent and experience. It would certainly make sense for Villa to swoop for the winger.

West Ham’s 3 worst players v Arsenal

Vladimir Coufal, Said Benrahma and Kurt Zouma were all below par as West Ham United fell to a 2-1 defeat against Arsenal at the London Stadium this afternoon.

The Hammers were dealt a fatal blow in their quest for Champions League qualification through the Premier League as goals from Rob Holding and Gabriel came either side of a Jarrod Bowen equaliser.

David Moyes rang the changes to the starting line-up as the Irons’ ongoing Europa League exploits take centre stage, but this was still a performance full of endeavour and spirit from those in claret and blue.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, as reflected in statistics from Sofascore, some West Ham were off the pace, and we have crunched the numbers to dig deep into those disappointing displays…

Said Benrahma (6.4)

Benrahma was unable to have his usual positive impact in an attacking sense and was ultimately replaced on 81 minutes by Andriy Yarmolenko with the Hammers in search of an equaliser.

Whilst on the pitch, the Algerian attacker misplaced five of his seven crosses, lost possession 11 times and came out on the wrong side of six of his seven duels before being taken off.

Kurt Zouma (6.3)

Back in Premier League action having made a return from injury in midweek against Eintracht Frankfurt, the 26-year-old struggled to recapture his best form against Arsenal today.

The Frenchman was beaten in six of his 10 duels, lost possession of the ball six times and misplaced three long balls in a forgettable match for the centre-back.

Vladimir Coufal (6.1)

This was a rather inauspicious display from the usually dependable Czech Republic international.

Featuring for the entire contest, the 29-year-old right-back lost possession 21 times, failed to find a team-mate with five of his six crosses and lost eight of his 11 duels overall.

£65m star very tempted to join Arsenal in January after admitting he’s a fan

Arsenal have been given a clear advantage in the race for a Premier League star who’s also wanted by Tottenham, with a January move also on the cards.

Arsenal tipped for quiet January after major summer spend

Andrea Berta splashed nearly £270 million on eight major signings during his debut summer window in north London, and reports suggest that the Gunners could expect a more quiet winter window for the Italian.

Arsenal’s summer spending spree delivered eight significant arrivals, including Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Piero Hincapie, Christian Norgaard and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

This remarkable depth across every department means January business appears quite unnecessary, provided unmissable opportunities don’t arise, that is.

UEFA’s Squad Coast regulations have reportedly influenced Arsenal’s cautious stance, with stricter squad amortization and wage controls demanding careful navigation (The Mirror).

The club is currently sailing perilously close to squad cost limits, making substantial additions virtually impossible without corresponding departures.

Standout attacker 'will soon sign' for Arsenal with talks in 'full swing'

He’s been in fine form this season.

ByEmilio Galantini 5 days ago

Gabriel Jesus could be one of Arsenal’s candidates for the exit door, should a significant offer come in. The Brazilian forward, who is on the verge of a return to action after 11 months out with an ACL injury, faces long-term uncertainty given the presence of Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Mikel Merino.

Jesus was an unused substitute against Chelsea and Brentford, but Arteta has now included the Brazil international in his Champions League squad to replace the injured Max Dowman.

Any Jesus sale would generate transfer funds, while compatriot Gabriel Martinelli remains another player Arsenal could consider selling if substantial bids arrive (BBC).

The Brazilian’s position has become increasingly precarious following Madueke and Eze’s arrivals, not to mention Leandro Trossard’s outstanding form, with his contract also expiring in 2027.

Martinelli’s exit would lead to the possibility of another winger coming in (BBC), with Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo available for £65 million early next month thanks to a release clause in his contract.

The Ghanaian’s exceptional form has attracted interest from N5, Tottenham, Man City and Liverpool heading into January, but while Arsenal may need to sell before they can realistically move, they still have a leg-up on Spurs.

Antoine Semenyo 'far more tempted' to join Arsenal than Tottenham

That is according to The Sun’s Tom Barclay, who reports that Semenyo is ‘far more tempted’ to join Arsenal over Tottenham should a January transfer materialize.

History could repeat itself here following last summer’s Eberechi Eze saga.

The 25-year-old’s release clause is activatable until January 10, making him available despite Tottenham’s intensifying interest. However, Semenyo apparently remains hesitant about moving to north London’s white half — the identical reservation that preceded Eze’s sensational late switch to Arsenal.

Tottenham had reached an agreement with Crystal Palace for Eze last August before Arsenal thundered in dramatically, securing the attacking midfielder’s signature in a £67.5 million deal.

Eze, a boyhood Arsenal supporter, chose his childhood club and subsequently rubbed salt into Tottenham’s wounds by scoring a magnificent hat-trick during Arsenal’s 4-1 derby demolition on November 23.

Semenyo has previously declared himself an Arsenal fan too, and when asked if joining them would be a dream come true, he suggested that it is the case.

This emotional connection could make the Emirates Stadium approach significantly more tempting than alternatives.

Barclay also reports that Arsenal could make a move for Semenyo in January, so if Berta can source the funds for a swoop, this may be one to watch.

Brand-new formation: Rangers can replace Diomande with "complete" star

Glasgow Rangers slumped to yet another defeat under head coach Russell Martin when they were beaten 1-0 by Belgian giants Genk on Thursday night.

In front of their own fans at Ibrox, the Scottish Premiership giants were unable to win the supporters back over with an impressive performance. Instead, they failed to impress and could have lost by a greater margin.

To add insult to misery, it was former Celtic striker Hyeon-gyu Oh, who could have had three or four goals on the night, with the killer blow in the match, firing into the bottom corner on the counter-attack.

Rangers were also hit with a blow in the first half when central midfielder Mohamed Diomande was shown a straight red card for his challenge on El Ouahdi.

The Ivorian midfielder slid in to make the challenge, rolled his foot over the ball, and made contact with the opposition player above the ankle, which gave the referee no choice but to give him his marching orders.

It was an unfortunate situation, borne out of bad luck rather than malicious intent by Diomande, but it is a situation that Martin now has to deal with.

Why losing Mohamed Diomande is a blow for Rangers

The left-footed star’s suspension for the clash with Sturm Graz in the Europa League next Thursday is a big blow for Rangers because he is an important player in the middle of the park.

Diomande has not made the best start to the Premiership season, losing 56% of his duels and failing to register a goal or an assist (per Sofascore), but his form in the Europa League in the 2024/25 campaign shows that he can be a big player for the Gers on the European stage.

The 23-year-old star started nine of his ten appearances in the competition for Philippe Clement and Barry Ferguson last season, and showed off his strength out of possession for the Light Blues.

As you can see in the table above, Diomande ranked highly among his fellow central midfielders in the Europa League last season when it came to contributing to defensive actions in the middle of the park.

These statistics show that he is an incredibly combative and defensively sound operator more often than not, as silly as that sounds to say after he was shown a straight red card against Genk.

Rangers will now have to reconfigure their starting line-up when they come to face Sturm Graz next week, because they will not have Diomande available to provide his energy and combativeness in midfield.

However, Martin could look for a creative solution to the problem instead of just putting Connor Barron or Joe Rothwell into the side as a direct replacement for the Ivorian star in midfield.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

That creative solution could be to deploy a brand-new formation against Sturm Graz, which should not be out of the question when you consider that the current set-up has led to four wins in 14 matches for the head coach to date.

Instead of unleashing another midfielder in Diomande’s place, Martin should bring Bojan Miovski into the starting line-up to play alongside Youssef Chermiti in a 4-4-2 formation for the Scottish giants.

Why Miovski should replace Diomande for Rangers

With exciting wingers like Oliver Antman and Djeidi Gassama available to play on the flanks, playing with two out-and-out centre-forwards could be a good way for Rangers to go against Sturm Graz, leaving Nico Raskin and Thelo Aasgaard in central midfield.

Chermiti made his full debut for the Gers against Genk, having signed in a deal worth up to £10m from Everton in the summer transfer window, but found himself crowded out too often.

One of the, many, issues that Rangers have had this season is that their lone centre-forward has looked too isolated and detached from the rest of the players on the pitch, which has made it too easy for opposition defenders to bully them out of matches.

As you can see in the table above, Miovski and Chermiti have both been dominated by centre-backs in duels in their starts for the Light Blues so far this season, which suggests that the current system is not doing enough to give them the support that they need.

Therefore, switching to a 4-4-2 and having two number nines to occupy the opposition defenders could give the Gers more of an edge in their physical battles at the top end of the pitch, helping them to hold the ball up more effectively and to win more first contacts from balls into the box from wide areas.

As you can see in the graphic above, Miovski was a prolific scorer during his last spell in Scottish football with Aberdeen, which shows that he can be a lethal forward for the Gers.

The Macedonia international, who was hailed as a “complete” player by journalist Josh Bunting, scored his first goal for Rangers in the 2-0 win over Hibernian in the League Cup last weekend, which will hopefully be the first of many for him at Ibrox.

Miovski’s experience and goalscoring pedigree could make him the dream strike partner for 21-year-old Chermiti, who did not score a single competitive goal during his two-year spell with Everton.

They could complement each other well because the 6 foot 4 frame of Chermiti could put the hard work in physically, allowing the slight, more mobile, Miovski to make runs in behind to create chances for himself and his teammates.

Not Dyche or Gerrard: Rangers should axe Martin for future "elite manager"

With Russell Martin under intense pressure as Rangers boss, the 49ers should make a future “elite manager” their top target to replace him at Ibrox.

Sep 25, 2025

Therefore, the red card for Diomande could end up being a blessing in disguise if it forces Martin to be creative with a brand-new formation that could turn the team’s fortunes around.

Ange must now unleash Nottingham Forest star who "spelt the end for Nuno"

What a turbulent week it has been for Nottingham Forest. The East Midlands side have seen their manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, sacked after around 18 months in the hot seat at the City Ground. His replacement has already been named as former Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

However, Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett said “the writing was on the wall” when Edu was appointed the club’s sporting director. Forest spent plenty of money over the summer, too, increasing the size of their squad and spending freely as they have under owner Evangelos Marinakis.

It was certainly a surprise when one of those signings, Omari Hutchinson, was omitted from the Europa League squad.

Hutchinson’s time at Forest so far

England under-21 international Hutchinson made the move to the City Ground from Ipswich Town, who were relegated at the end of last season. He cost the East Midlands side a club-record fee of £37.5m and signed a five-year contract.

In two games under Nuno so far, the 21-year-old has only made two fleeting appearances. His debut was an eight-minute cameo against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, and he played one minute in the 3-0 loss at home to West Ham United.

On the face of things, it is strange that Hutchinson has played so little football for Forest. Even if he is not match fit and ready to start, you might have thought he’d play more than nine minutes in two games. He was a key player for England under-21s in their successful European Championship campaign and scored in the final.

Even stranger, then, is the fact the forward was omitted from the Europa League squad. Charlie Austin said on Sky Sports that “Nottingham Forest convincing Omari Hutchinson to come play for that football club, European football would have been a part of it”, so to leave him out is a strange decision.

It will be fascinating to see if Postecoglou unleashes Hutchinson early on in his reign. There is another player who the Australian manager might well choose to play, who Nuno did not.

The Forest outcast Postecoglou could now unleash

It was certainly a big summer for Forest. Signing several new players to wear Garibaldi Red this season does mean there are going to be some unhappy people in that squad, but one player’s lack of involvement has been a surprise.

27-year-old midfielder Douglas Luiz was a summer addition from Juventus. He signed for the Nottingham-based outfit on a season-long loan from the Old Lady, with an obligation to buy him at the end of the season if certain conditions are met.

Yet, Luiz has played even less than Hutchinson. The former Aston Villa midfielder was an unused substitute for the two games he’s been available for. That surprised talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, who said it was a decision that “spelt the end for Nuno” at Forest.

It is curious that the Brazilian has played so little at Forest. His time at Villa Park showed just how good of a Premier League player he is. In 204 games for the Villans, he scored 22 times and assisted 24, operating as a number six, controlling the game, and a number eight.

The tenacity shown in the video above from 2023/24 is exactly what he can bring to the Forest midfield.

His underlying numbers from that campaign are impressive, with the Brazilian having a 60% take-on success rate and winning 4.5 duels per 90 minutes.

It is certainly hard to understand why Nuno didn’t field Luiz at all this season. However, with the quality he can bring on the ball and his engine out of possession, he is a midfielder that Postecoglou can depend on.

Forest are next in action away to Arsenal, so it will be fascinating to see if their new manager gives Luiz minutes. He will certainly be hoping to avoid some of the mistakes Nuno made towards the end of his tenure.

Romano: Liverpool lead race to sign another 21 y/o defender after talks

Liverpool are now leading the race to complete the signing of a “great” player in the summer transfer window, according to a new update from Fabrizio Romano.

Liverpool eyeing signings on either flank

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have been a legendary full-back pairing for the Reds over the past seven or eight years, but there is a changing of the guard at Anfield this summer.

Sadly, Alexander-Arnold has opted to leave Liverpool in order to almost certainly join Real Madrid, which unsurprisingly hasn’t gone down well with many supporters, while Robertson isn’t the force he once was at left-back – no surprise, considering he is now 31 and has years of relentless running behind him.

Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold

Jeremie Frimpong is set to arrive from Bayer Leverkusen, potentially coming in as a right-back, but he is also more than capable of taking up a more attacking right-sided role. It remains to be seen how Arne Slot will use him, and if Conor Bradley will be first-choice right-back moving forward.

Meanwhile, Milos Kerkez has emerged as the strongest option at left-back, following an excellent season with Bournemouth, although Fulham’s Antonee Robinson and Ajax teenager Jorrel Hato have also been mentioned as options. Manchester City have reportedly been looking to hijack a move for Kerkez, though, being seen as “genuine rivals” for his signature.

Liverpool in pole position to sign Kerkez after talks

Taking to X on Sunday, Romano said that Liverpool are in pole position to sign Kerkez from Bournemouth this summer, with talks continuing to head in the right direction:

Kerkez really does feel like the natural fit to come in and be Liverpool’s new first-choice left-back, ticking so many boxes, in terms of what Slot will be looking for.

The 21-year-old Hungary international is strong at both ends of the pitch, bagging seven goal contributions (two goals and five assists) in the Premier League this season, as well as averaging 2.6 clearances and 1.4 tackles per game.

In fact, Kerkez’s performances haven’t been lost on Slot, who has said he has enjoyed a “great season”, while football talent scout Jacek Kulig called him “amazing” after Bournemouth beat Manchester City earlier in the season.

At this point, it could be a surprise if the Cherries star didn’t join Liverpool, in a summer transfer window that is already threatening to be legendary.

Liverpool are brewing their own version of Wirtz in "fearless" academy star

Liverpool could do with an academy sensation breaking into Arne Slot’s senior squad.

ByAngus Sinclair May 24, 2025

If the Reds manage to sign Kerkez, Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and a top-quality striker, it will be significant business that may only make them far stronger heading into next season.

Dream Birmingham XI after promotion: Adams returns, "unplayable" star signs

Both Birmingham City and Wrexham will be attempting to unsettle the Championship after promotion, knowing full well that they have immense pulling power as teams on the rise.

After all, Chris Davies’ runaway League One champions didn’t just win Jay Stansfield by chance, with St. Andrew’s a glamorous location to now ply your trade courtesy of Tom Wagner’s mega millions boosting the once downtrodden giants.

Therefore, if they were able to tempt their top scorer down to the third tier, it’s amazing to contemplate what other earth-shattering signings they could now get in through the door.

The Blues are certainly dominating a lot of EFL conversation this summer with who they’re being linked with, with this dream XI below surely the best plausible lineup Davies could call upon when the excitement of Championship action gets underway.

1 GK – Mark Travers

Firstly, Birmingham might well believe they need to improve in-between the sticks when adjusting back up to the second tier.

Their usual number one goalkeeper Ryan Allsop only shipped 26 goals in league action last season, but if they were able to land Mark Travers – following links to the Bournemouth man – he would surely get the first-team nod over the recent promotion winner.

Sheffield United's Callum O'Hare in action with Middlesbrough's MarkTravers

After all, Travers has significant experience in the Championship on his side with 76 career games at the level under his belt. To add to that, he has also kept a respectable 26 clean sheets along the way.

2 RB – Ethan Laird

Birmingham City's Ethan Laird in action with Newcastle United'sMattTargett

Whilst there could be some change in goal, Ethan Laird will be hopeful that his secure first-team spot at right-back remains set in stone for the jump up.

The ex-Manchester United full-back was as much of an attacking menace for the Blues last season as he was a defensive warrior, as seen in his impressive five goals and four assists in league action, on top of also winning a high 6.4 duels on average per contest.

3 CB – Ben Davies

The second signing Birmingham could make is to bring loan hero Ben Davies back permanently after he was a defensive colossus all of last campaign, away from parent employers Rangers.

Davies would strike up a fine partnership with Christoph Klarer – as seen in the pair tallying up a mammoth 38 clean sheets between them – with the Blues boss hopeful that the experienced 29-year-old can look as assured in the league above if he remains put.

4 CB – Christoph Klarer

The aforementioned Klarer would love to line up alongside his ex-Preston North End teammate once more, having been near faultless next to the 6-foot-1 enforcer at the top end of League One.

The dominant Austrian is also very deserving of his plaudits, considering he managed to register seven big chances created playing out from the back, away from just merely putting his equally towering frame to good use.

5 LB – Alex Cochrane

Making up the final component of the imposing back four is former Hearts man Alex Cochrane.

Much like his partner in crime down the right, Cochrane has been able to show off his ability to create chances galore throughout the League One season, culminating in him creating a sizeable nine big chances from 42 overall clashes.

To cap off his sterling individual campaign, the 25-year-old also bagged this beauty against Stevenage in April.

6 CM – Tomoki Iwata

Wreham's Elliot Lee in action with Birmingham City'sTomokiIwata.

Heading into the midfield areas and Tomoki Iwata will be keen to prove himself as a Championship-ready talent after some stylish showings in the third tier.

Iwata would go on to be an absolute steal from Celtic when joining for around £the £800k mark, considering the Japanese midfielder would round off his first-ever EFL adventure with eight goals and two assists next to his name.

7 CM – Kanya Fuijmoto

Kanya Fujimoto in action for Gil Vicente.

Iwata might well be joined by a new teammate centrally, however, as Birmingham continue to be linked with a switch for Gil Vicente ace Kanya Fujimoto.

The newly promoted side must be holding out hope that Fujimoto can be Iwata 2.0 on his potential St. Andrew’s arrival, with the 28-year-old’s compatriot proving himself to be as slick as the Blues number 24 playing out in Portugal.

Whilst he is comfortable slotting in as a number ten – as seen in his five goals and five assists in league action last season – Fujimoto can also line up as a traditional central midfield option, meaning he could partner Iwata very soon in England.

8 RM – Kwame Poku

Kwame Poku for Peteborough.

Birmingham won’t be content with just three new purchases ahead of Championship football triumphantly returning with a fourth potentially in the offing with Kwame Poku, amid reports that an offer has been made to the Peterborough star.

It’s been a drawn-out saga this summer already involving Poku and Davies’ side, but if Birmingham are finally successful in landing the tricky Ghanaian’s services over a crazy 25 other suitors, he would slot into the team effortlessly down the right wing.

Surely, he’s now ready for the challenge of affirming himself as an EFL superstar even more in the West Midlands.

9 CAM – Jay Stansfield

Stansfield is arguably another big name when it comes to the EFL, with Birmingham fans head over heels for the former Fulham forward.

He would end his own distinguished 2024/25 campaign by firing home 19 league strikes, meaning he could absolutely terrorise Championship defences when partnered with Poku.

10 LM – Keshi Anderson

Whilst the likes of Stansfield stole most of the limelight during Birmingham’s smooth title success, Keshi Anderson also regularly put in fine performances as a more seasoned head of the group.

In all competitions, the pacey left winger would tally up a hefty nine goals and eight assists, with Davies confident now that the experienced attacker can come good in the second tier, having played here previously and somewhat struggled with ex-employers Blackpool.
